    9．As a senior，my future is always on my mind．To be exact，thoughts of the future have kept me up countless nights and made me worry enough to do poorly on more than one test．Because of this，words of wisdom are a source of comfort．Steve Jobs once gave a speech to Stanford's graduating class in 2005and his words resound repeatedly in my mind whenever I think about my future．
    When I hear Jobs discuss his life as a student，some of my fears were eased．He，too，felt the need to attend college to make something of himself．He faced what many are extremely afraid of：uncertainty．His lack of understanding caused him to stop attending college and focus on what he felt was important．His story had a happy ending，of course，since he certainly turned out well．This doesn't mean that students shouldn't attend college，but rather that they shouldn't worry so much．
    Jobs talked about the hardships in his work．His love of his work helped him carry on and he got where he was meant to be，which restates the point：don't panic．
    One particular part of his speech stayed with me．Steve Jobs quoted（引用）the saying"Stay hungry，stay foolish"and it has become my motto．Staying foolish is realizing that you are still a fool，no matter how much you've learned or experienced．There is always more to explore．Staying hungry is wanting to find those things about which you are still uneducated．
    Steve Jobs's level of success is attainable，and I aim to prove that．With the will power to go into the world living every day like it's my last and allowing the future to take care of itself，I will do great things．In the last moments of my life，I'll be proud of what I have done and hope to have all the wisdom a person could wish for．

    13．I cannot speak Spanish．It is a fact that becomes extremely obvious whenever I visit my mother because she lives in Argentina，but before sophomore（大二） year，she lived in Puerto Rico．When I was a child，I went to Puerto Rico every summer．We lived in a villa on the grounds of the Westin Rio Mar and had family in the small town of Rio Grande．My lack of Spanish skills was met with a mixture of disdain（蔑视） and fascination at the fact that I was a"unilingual"American．Though I explained to them that I studied French，it did little to convince them．
    After months of pleading（哀求） for a vacation in a French-speaking country，we went to the Canadian province of Quebec．I was looking forward to the role-reversal（角色转换）； for once，I would be the bilingual traveler and my mother would be the"Ugly American．"To my surprise，she transitioned（转换） almost seamlessly（无缝），using her broken French as a jumping off point to start conversations．In doing so，she met many people who were eager for a chance to converse in English with a native speaker．
    Her ability to connect with others confused me．I did not understand how she could relate to them so easily，that is until I went to Ghana．Though I worked during the day，I was able to spend quality time with the girls attending the Nsaba Diaspora School，a recently built single-sex school in a rural village．They were in the process of learning English and I cannot speak Twi （their language），but we connected immediately．They took me to their classes，showed me the village and worked math problems with me on a chalkboard so we could compare problem-solving methods．
    What brought us together was a shared desire to relate to each other and to experience life from another viewpoint．What I took away from that experience was that language does not have to function as a barrier if both sides are willing to look past linguistic differences and acknowledge shared humanity（人性）．

    17．Surprises often come in boxes．Birthday presents wrapped in colorful paper，brown paper packages mailed from a friend．No matter what kind of box it is，people like to open it up and see what's inside．In America，and in many other countries，one special kind of box contains the future．It's called a ballot box．What people put into the box on election day can change the course of history．
    Elections are the lifeblood of a democracy．The word democracy literally means"the people rule，"an important concept in American history．In the mid-1700s，England began passing laws that made the American colonies angry．The colonists had to pay more and more taxes and enjoyed less and less freedom．They felt the government of England didn't represent their interests．On July 4，1776，the colonies declared their independence from England．They wanted to establish a democracy where people could have a voice in government．
    An effective democracy holds regular elections．In America，elections are held every two years for members of Congress．In these elections，all seats in the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate seats are up for grabs．In addition，every four years，voters go to the polls to elect the nation's president and vice-president．Voters also regularly cast their ballots for state and city government leaders and local school board members．Sometimes they also have to vote on a proposed law．
    In the American electoral system，people don't really vote for presidential candidates．Instead，voters cast their ballots for"electors"who support each candidate．Each state has as many electors as the total number of its representatives in Congress．This equals two senators per state plus the number of its representatives in the House （which is based on the state's population）．The candidate who has the most votes in a state wins all of the state's electors．To win the presidential election，a candidate must gain at least 270 of the 538 total electoral votes．
    Over the years，the U．S．has made a number of election reforms．Some early reforms outlawed cheating，giving bribes and threatening voters．They also limited the amount of money candidates could receive from donors and spend on their campaigns．In 1870，black people gained the right to vote，and in 1920，that right was extended to women．In recent decades，laws against unfair rules for voting have been passed．No longer do people have to pay a special tax or pass a test in order to vote．In 1971，the voting age was lowered to 18．Other reforms made voting easier for the blind，the disabled and people who couldn't read．In some areas，ballots had to be printed in languages besides English．
    In November，Americans will again elect those who will represent them in government．Although some citizens aren't even registered to vote--and some registered voters don't bother to go to the polls--most Americans exercise their right to vote．They realize that their future is wrapped up in a special package--the ballot box．It's a package that must definitely be"handled with care"．
