When the population of the port town began to suffer from poisoning, the police came to find the cause of the poison. They thought someone was poisoning the people on purpose but no one knew how it was possible. Soon people took the position that the pork was poisoned. It was a popular food everyone ate and it could have possibly made everyone sick. Anyone who had possession of pork would throw it out. Even the poorest of the poor wouldn’t eat pork. Signs were posted on poles and letters were sent to everyone to warn people of the pork. Shortly afterwards, even policemen in high positions were also getting sick.
Soon it became political and popular. Politicians rushed to the town to talk about politics and promised how they would find the solution if they were elected. Everyone was so sick that they didn’t care about politics. Everyone was in a position where he or she didn’t know what to do anymore. They went to the post office to mail posts out asking for help. The poor town didn’t know how to deal with the situation.
One day, a well-known scientist from New York came to the town with a huge box containing many instruments and his possessions. He went to pools and the port and made measurements. He was quiet and polite. Then one day he made a speech at a newspaper meeting-room to announce his findings.
“I’m sorry to say your water supply is so heavily polluted; it is poisoned. I know who has been poisoning you all for such a long time. It is you who have been poisoning yourselves with pollution. A great deal of rubbish has been thrown into the water day after day. No one here has taken good care of the environment. Edmund Percival Hillary was one of the greatest explorers of the twentieth century. He was born in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1919. He discovered an interest in mountain climbing while he was still in high school and began climbing New Zealand's Southern Alps.
Like his father, Hillary earned his living as a beekeeper. However, he continued to climb mountains. His goal was to climb Mt. Everest, which is the highest mountain in the world. By the early 1950s, several expeditions(探险队)had attempted to reach the summit of Everest, but all had failed. Then, in 1953, Hillary and a Nepalese climber named Tenzing Norgay became the first two people to reach the top of the world.
Hillary's spirit of exploration was not satisfied. He joined an expedition to Antarctica and reached the South Pole in 1958. He also made an expedition up the Ganges River to its source in the Himalayas. Sir Edmund Hillary was a brave adventurer. He went where no man or woman had gone before.
Although Hillary was best known as the young man who climbed to the summit of Mt. Everest in the 1950s, he continued his journeys to far-off places into his senior years. For instance, in his mid-sixties Hillary flew to the North Pole with Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon. Moreover, Hillary authored many books. However, his most lasting gift, perhaps, was the Sir Edmund Hillary Himalayan Trust(信托基金). It raised millions of dollars and contributed to schools, hospitals and many other public improvements in the Sherpa villages of Nepal. In January 2008, Sir Edmund Hillary died at the age of 88.
Despite being a great adventurer and known for the treasure he left Sir Edmund Hillary always modestly referred to himself as a simple beekeeper from New Zealand.

C. money-raising D. story-writing

Nowadays, cars have become a very common vehicle in our life.As the most important transport, cars have improved our modern life in many ways. However, cars also bring about so many problems for people, which should be given more attention than any time before.
Cars give people the ability to travel to any place they like. Many people begin to travel frequently. This helps people connect with each other better than before.A more obvious influence from cars is the large number of jobs that they create.Jobs in several fields open up thanks to cars, such as jobs in car factories, gas stations and highways. This is a huge positive influence on society because they greatly reduce the unemployment rate.
At the same time, the problems that cars cause seem to be more and more serious.A mass use of cars is bound to have some negative consequences. The widespread use of cars has led to serious traffic jams in cities. They have resulted in a reduction in the use of public transportation in many cities. The need to use and develop public transportation has been much discussed and confirmed. And also, car accidents create a number of injuries and deaths. There are hundreds of thousands of them worldwide every year.Gas let out from the engines of cars pollutes the air in cities around the world.Air pollution creates serious health problems and causes many people to die from it.It has become one of the most serious problems today.Efforts to develop pollution-free engines may be the final solution to this problem.
In conclusion, people should not only enjoy the benefits of cars, but also aim to deal with the problems cars have created. At the same time, the government should improve city traffic systems, encourage people to use public transportation, make efforts to improve road safety and encourage the usage of fuels that are low in pollutants.Only in these ways can the benefits of cars outweigh their harmfulness.

Pink has never been one of the favorite colors of the fashion industry,as it's often seen as silly and not cool enough. But this spring,it's having its moment in the spotlight, all thanks to the fact that the color is no longer all about being girly and sweet.Instead, pink is taking on a new meaning of independence and power.
This shift happened last month during the Women's March.Tens of thousands of women filled the streets of major cities in the US and in countries all around the world to protest(抗议)against the disrespect to women. What was unusual about the protests is that a lot of people taking part were wearing pink hats, making the streets appear like a "sea of pink".Even though the hats were without any slogan(标语),their pink color is thought to have sent out a message that is louder than any words."We women have power and we're not going to sit down and shut up," Aileen Gildea, one of the protesters in the US,told The Boston Globe.
Now young people are changing their attitudes to pink. They are no longer trying to escape pink, but give new meanings to it instead.
"Women who came before us ...to be taken seriously they had to get away from the symbols used to make women seem less capable.Younger women don't have that reaction. They're more interested in breaking and rebuild those symbols,"Audrey Gelman,a businesswoman in the US,told The Wall Street Journal.
So sometimes it's not the thing itself that needs to be changed, but the way we look at it.And in the case of pink, what used to be seen as silly may be turned into something really serious.
1.In general, people tend to relate pink to .
A. independence B. weakness
C. power D. sadness
2.According to Aileen Gildea, what were their protests meant to convey?
A. Women actually prefer pink to any other color.
B. Women need to get away from those symbols of silliness.
C. Women ought to have a bigger voice in society.
D. Women should have the right to choose whatever colors.
3.The last paragraph implies that sometimes it is necessary to .
A. change our traditional concepts
B. show greater respect for women
C. have doubts about the so-called "truth"
D. tell something silly from something serious

Do you often lose things? Don’t worry. Now a new tool that can be connected to any object you might lose may be the way to solve your problem. The Tile, a small square linked up to your iphone or ipad by means of Bluetooth, lets you see how close you are to your missing item, within a 50-to-150-foot range. If the item goes out of your phone’s 150-foot range, it can still be found on other smart phones with the same app.
When you drive the app on your phone, it shows you, with green bars that increase or decrease, how close or far away you are from the Tile. You can also program it to make a sound when you get close to the Tile. And you can link up your phone with up to ten Tiles. And if your lost object—a dog, for example, or a stolen bike-go out of your own phone’s 150-foot Bluetooth range, you can set it as a “lost item”. If any of the phones with the Tile app comes within range of your lost item, a message will be sent to your phone, telling you its position. The Tile app also has the function to remember where it last saw your Tile, so that you can easily find where you left it.
Since the Tiles use Bluetooth rather than GPS, they are never out of battery or needn’t to be charged, and they work for one year before needing to be replaced. And the app works with all generations of iPhones and iPads.
For further information, please visit www. tile666.com.
