A man walks into a doctor¡¯s office. He has a cucumber up his nose, a carrot in his left ear and a banana in his right ear. ¡°What¡¯s the matter with me?¡± he asks the doctor. The doctor replies, ¡°You¡¯re not eating properly.¡±
This is a popular joke among British schoolchildren. It reflects Britain¡¯s famous dry and satirical way of seeing the funny side of life. This unique sense of humor is often cited as one of Britain¡¯s defining national characteristics.
¡°The famous British sense of humor has long been our most cherished national characteristic,¡± says the British journalist Leo Mckinstry. ¡°We have valued it above historic military victories and great works of literature, above our rich scenic landscape and our talent for invention.¡±
The British sense of humor differs from other countries because it is generally more negative. When it comes to making the British laugh, there is nothing more effective than a socially inappropriate joke.
Popular British comedy shows such as Fawlty Towers, Blackadder and The office are full of sarcasm(·í´Ì), teasing and self-deprecation(×Ô³°). It reflects the culture where mocking, moaning and ridicule is part of everyday life.
While most Britons don¡¯t take these jokes too seriously, foreigners are often puzzled by them. A recent survey found that most foreigners who visited Britain found that the British are ¡°arrogant, unfriendly and have almost no sense of humor¡±.
Do foreigners not understand British humor or are the British just not as funny as they think they are? Mckinstry certainly thinks the British are funny. ¡°Accusing the British of having no sense of humor is like telling Rolls-Royce that its cars are down-market.¡± he says.

English songs have been very popular for people around the world for many decades. Songs from Elvis Presley to Ricky Martin, from the Beatles to Eminem and from Natalie Cole to Britney Spears have all been enjoyed by people around the world, even for people who don¡¯t speak English, and even for people who speak zero English.
From my experience, some people listen to English songs for 20-30 years but still don¡¯t achieve any good English skills. Some people choose English songs to be their main learning method, but most of them fail.
Listening to English songs does not help you to speak English fluently. It does help you gain some vocabulary, but most of these words are unusual ones that you don¡¯t use in everyday life. You won¡¯t learn the sentence ¡°It is a difficult project. We really need to meet the deadline.¡± in any English songs. All you will hear are love, passion, affection, hate and blue, for the feeling, not the color.
People like using English songs to practice English skills because it¡¯s easy and enjoyable. They think that sitting in the car listening to English songs day after day will improve their English skills. It actually will not.
You will definitely not improve your listening skills because normal people don¡¯t speak with a tune. People don¡¯t talk like Eminem¡¯s songs. You can¡¯t get yourself familiar with English pronunciation or accent just from listening to English songs. The words that they pronounce in the songs are not the words that you will hear in your everyday life. They can even confuse you more about how English is pronounced.
I would fully encourage you to watch English movies and listen to radio news or other normal talks, but not music. Of course, you can consume it for fun but not with the aim of improving your English skills. Having good English skills is not that easy. Remember you should work hard to improve your English step by step.

The impression you make at the beginning of an interview is very important. Employers often decide to hire someone in the first three minutes of the interview. They judge you by your appearance, attitude and manners.
A friendly smile when you walk into the room is important. A smile shows a confident and positive attitude.
When you introduce yourself, make eye contact with the interviewer. Some interviewers offer a handshake. Others don't.
Try to be as natural as possible. But pay attention to your body language. The way you sit, walk, gesture, use your voice and show feelings on your face is all part of your body language. It makes the interviewer know how you feel about yourself and the situation you are in. Are you feeling positively about yourself? Your abilities? Your interest in the job?
Speak clearly and loudly enough. Show interest and enthusiasm in your voice. When you speak, look at the interviewer. Also, don't say negative things about yourself, or former employer.
Listen to questions carefully. If you don't understand a question, ask the interviewer to repeat or explain: "I'm sorry, but I didn't catch that." "I'm not sure exactly what you mean."
Almost everyone is nervous in a job interview. Interviewers know that. They don't expect you to be totally calm and relaxed. But they expect you to try to control your nervousness. They expect you to show confidence in your ability to do the job.
At the end of the interview, thank the interviewer for her or his time.
It's a good idea to send a short thank-you letter right after the interview, or deliver it by hand.
Phone the company if you have not heard anything after one week. Ask if they have made a decision about the job.
Good luck!
