Leading the way

They may not have been at the heart of the action on court, but these cheerleaders(拉拉队)know how important it is to make themselves heard.

“We have an unshakeable(坚定不移的)belief in the power of cheering to make a difference,” said Xu Chan, a Senior 2 girl at the High School Affiliated(附属的)to Beijing Normal University. She has every reason to be confident.Xu and her schoolmates were named the best cheerleading team at the Reebok Beijing High School Basketball League final on February 15.

The 12-member squad(队)performed at every home match, their not hot dances and passionate cheers pushing games to an exciting climax(高潮).They usually perform during timeouts(中场休息)and breaks. But while encouraging the team on court is important, the girls also have personal reasons for taking part.“Dancing is a good way to keep fit,” Xu said.

Xing Yue, a student at No.50 high school, found that cheerleading had made her more organized.“I’m the oldest student on the team so I have to take charge when the teacher is not there,” she said.“I have to remind my teammates what they must do.As a result I have become more observant(遵守纪律).”

However, many girls are unsure if they will be able to carry on cheerleading due to growing study pressures. For Wu Tong, a Senior 2 student at Hepingjie No.1 High School, last week was definitely her swan song.Having failed to achieve the grades she’d hoped for, her parents have said the cheerleading must stop. But she will take away some happy memories of performing in the basketball league.

“We are the best, we believe in ourselves,” she said.“We didn’t win this time so I hope the girls go on to realize their dreams next year.”

D.

What the cheerleaders do can encourage the team and push the games to an exciting climax.

答案:1.A;2.C;3.D;4.D;
解析:

(3)

Many people wonder why the United States has been a hotspot for Chinese students for years, despite its extremely strict visa policy. On the other hand, China’s rise as an economic powerhouse is resulting in a rapid expansion of its higher education system, making it the faster-growing destination for American foreign exchange students.

Recently, according to a study by the Institute of International Education, a research organization based in New York, the number of American students seeking higher education in China has never been greater, increasing by 90 percent from 2002 to 2004. Alan Goodman, president of the institute, believes that the phenomenon lies in the pace of change in China, which is spending billions of dollars to expend and transform its higher educational facilities into world-class  institutions.

“China is a job market,” said Professor Chou, professor of East Asian Studies at Princeton University. “Twenty years ago, only those interested in Chinese literature would study Chinese language. Now all professors have opened up.”

China now ranks 9th as a host destination for American students, advancing from the No.12 spot it held a year earlier. The study revealed that Britain continues to be the leading destination, attracting 16.8 percent of all American students who study abroad. On the other hand, in the 2004-2005 academic year, China sent more than 62,000 students to the United States, nearly 60 percent more than a decade earlier. According to the study, the Chinese now make up 11 percent of foreign students in the United States, the second-largest group behind students from India.
