I have been a member of our local Community Youth Club for four years. So far I have took part in a lot of interested projects including activities such as holiday camps and discos. We have organized difference groups to help people in the need. We are particular proud of the most recent group we have created, that organizes regular visits to the local old people¡¯s homes. The old people there tell us their personal story. Some of them are in poor health but very unhappy. My friends and I make up our mind to do more to help. Because our work is tiring, we think worthwhile.

I witnessed a street accident today, that happened as I was waiting for the green light. Without hesitate, a woman nearby tried to help victims. However, a nurse came and said, ¡°Excuse me, but I am a nurse and I can do it well than you. After all, I had taken a course in first aid. Stepping back, or I cannot work.¡± The women stepped aside and watched the procedure. Then she said, ¡°If you need a doctor, and I¡¯m just behind you.¡± The nurse turned and looked at the woman on surprise. Obviously, the nurse went red. Without saying any more, the doctor started to help. In my opinion, they were all responsible and great.

Ladies and gentlemen,

It¡¯s my honor to give a speech here. After-class activities play a important part in our school life. Proper activities help enrich our lives, broaden our horizons or develop our personalities.

Mine own experience can serve as a case in point. When I was in Senior One, I become a member of our drama club, that I used to visit on weekends. Since my participation in various activities organizing by the club, I achieved a lot.

These activities bring me a lot of funs, provide me with good opportunities to develop new friendships and open a window through which I have a brand-new outlook. With so much advantages shown above, why not to join us at once?

Most people have heard of Shakespeare and probably know something of the plays that he wrote. However£¬not everybody knows much about the life of this remarkable man£¬except perhaps that he was born in the market town of Stratford upon Avon and that he married a woman called Anne Hathaway. We know nothing of his school life. We do not know£¬for example£¬how long it lasted£¬but we presume that he attended the local grammar school£¬where the principal subject taught was Latin.

Nothing certain is known for what he did between the time he left school and his departure for London. According to a local legend£¬he was beaten and even put in prison for stealing rabbits and deer from the estate of a neighboring landowner£¬Sir Thomas Lucy. It is said that because of this he was forced to run away from his native place. A different legend says that he was apprenticed to a Stratford butcher£¬but did not like the life and for this reason decided to leave Stratford.

Whatever caused him to leave the town of his birth£¬the world can be grateful that he did so. What is certain is that he set his foot on the road to fame when he arrived in London. It is said that at first he had no money or friends there£¬but that he earned a little by taking care of the horses of the gentlemen who attended the plays at the theatre. In_time£¬as he became familiar figure to the actors in the theatre£¬they stopped and spoke to him. They found his conversation so brilliant that finally he was invited to join their company.

In 1841, a book was published which astonished the world. It was called ¡°Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan¡±. The author John Loud Stephens had just returned from a long, difficult and dangerous journey through the thick rain forest of southern Mexico and Guatemala. He had once been there with Frederick Catherwood, an architect and artist, to search for the remains of a lost civilization known as the Mayas(ÂêÑÅ). Very little was known about the Mayas at that time, but Catherwood's drawing in the book showed incredible cities with temples, pyramids and other buildings as impressive as those of their northern neighbors, the Aztecs. These cities, however, were deserted. The inhabitants(¾ÓÃñ) had disappeared almost a thousand years before.
Since that time, far more has been learned about this remarkable civilization. The Mayas had a highly-developed system of government and of agriculture, as well as an incredibly accurate system of measuring time. They were also wonderful engineers capable of moving huge blocks stone long distances and cutting them to accurate shapes and sizes.
And yet although the Mayas knew about the wheel, they never used it. Neither did they use metals other than copper. What is ever more surprising is that they suddenly abandoned many of their cities and built new ones in the jungle. Some time around AD 900, Mayan civilization collapsed(±ÀÀ£). By the year 1200, their last great capital, Chichen Itza, was deserted.
Who were these strange people and the even stranger gods they worshipped? What brought about their sudden and mysterious collapse? Some writers have tried to prove that the Mayas had contact with visitors from space and even that they themselves came from another planet. Some people believe that their civilization came to an end because the Mayas never developed a proper resistance to local germs and diseases. All we really know is that when the first Europeans appeared off their coast in 1517, this great and mysterious culture was only a memory.
£¨1£©Stephen's book astonished the world because .
A.it was the first time people heard about Mayas
B.the Mayas were excellent builders and farmers
C.he had experienced so may difficulties to find this lost civilization
D.it described that the Mayas used to be an advanced civilization
£¨2£©One of the most surprising findings about Mayas was that .
A.they developed accurate system measuring time
B.they knew how to build pyramids with stones
C.they deserted their cities and moved to new ones
D.they built cities which they never lived in

A.a thousand years before 1841
B.around AD 900
C.any year between 1200 and 1517
D.1200

A big bowl of milk can be a great way to start the day. Many snack bars contain nutrients that help our bodies stay strong and healthy. But some of these foods are packed with too many vitamins and minerals. According to a new study by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), this extra fortification may be more harmful than helpful.

Of the tested snack bars, 27 have more than 50% of the recommended amounts of vitamin A, niacin and zinc. Nutrition facts listed on packages are based on recommended daily values for adults, who are physically larger and require more vitamins and minerals. So when kids eat these cereals (ÂóƬ) and snack bars, they are getting more nutrients than they need.

Vitamin A, niacin (ÑÌËá) and zinc (п) are best in fresh and unprocessed foods that are in their natural state. Vitamin A helps you see at night. It occurs naturally in eggs, meat and carrots. Niacin is a vitamin that helps our bodies make energy. It is found in foods like fish, seeds, and peanuts, as well as in whole grains like wheat and brown rice. Zinc helps our bodies fight off infection. It is found in many foods, including wheat-based products, meats, beans and nuts.

Children typically eat more than one serving of cereal or snack bars a day, in addition to taking vitamin supplements. Eating large amounts of these nutrients can be dangerous to kids¡¯ health. Too much vitamin A can cause liver damage, and high levels of zinc can destroy the body¡¯s natural immunity, or power to fight infection.

The EWG authors are calling for the FDA to make changes to its guidelines for nutrient intake and revise its daily values to match kids¡¯ diets.

¡¾1¡¿ What can we infer from the second paragraph ?.

A. most kids are lack of nutrition.

B. kids need less nutrients than adults.

C. the cereals are full of all kinds of nutrients.

D. the snack bars don¡¯t have enough nutrients .

¡¾2¡¿If you want to avoid infection, what food should you eat more?

A. Meat and nuts. B. Fish and rice.

C. Eggs and carrots. D. Beans and fruits.

¡¾3¡¿The fourth paragraph is mainly to tell us that__________.

A. children like eating fast food

B. vitamins can damage immunity

C. too many nutrients affect health

D. children should refuse to eat cereal

¡¾4¡¿What would be the best title for the text?

A. Nutrients and kids¡¯ health.

B. Students¡¯ diet at school.

C. Kids¡¯ three main nutrients.

D. The importance of nutrients.
