There was once a captain who loved money so much that he cheated his sailors at the end of every voyage and took their wages.

On the last day of one voyage, the ship was in a small port. It was winter time, and the sea was very cold, so the captain said to his sailors, "If one of you stays in the water during the whole night, I will give him my ship. But if he comes out before the sun appears, I shall get his wages."

The sailors had heard about the captain's cheating, so they didn't trust him. But then one of them, who thought that he was cleverer than the captain, said that he would do it. He got into the water, and, though it was very cold, he stayed in it. When it was nearly morning, some fishermen lit a fire on the shore about half a mile away.

"You are cheating," the captain said to the sailor. "The fire's warming you."

"But it's half a mile away!" said the sailor.

"A fire's fire," answered the captain. "I have won."

The sailor came out of the water, and said, "Perhaps you think that you are clever because you have won my wages, but you can't cook a chicken."

"I can," answered the captain.

"If you cook this chicken," said the sailor, "I shall work for you without wages for seven years, but if you can't, you will give me your ship."

The captain agreed, took the chicken and said, "Where's the fire?"

"There it is," answered the sailor. "On the shore."

"But it's half a mile away," said the captain angrily.

" A fire's fire, you said," answered the sailor. "If it is enough to warm me in the water, it is enough to cook your chicken."

Different kinds of soil conservation methods are used by farmers to protect their land from damage by farming and the forces of nature. One important form of soil conservation is the use of windbreaks.

Windbreaks are barriers (屏障) formed by trees and other plants with many leaves. Farmers plant them in lines around their fields. Windbreaks stop the wind from blowing soil away. They also keep the wind from destroying or damaging crops. They are very important for growing grains, such as wheat.

There have been studies done on windbreaks in parts of West Africa, for example. They found that grain harvests can be twenty percent higher in fields protected by windbreaks compared to fields without such protection.

However, windbreaks seem to work best when they allow a little wind to pass through. If the wall of trees and plants stops wind completely, then violent air motions will take place close to the ground. These motions will lift soil into the air where it will be blown away. For this reason, a windbreak is best if it has only sixty to eighty percent of the trees and plants needed to make a solid line.

There should be at least two lines in each windbreak. One line should be large trees. The second line, right next to it, can be shorter trees and other plants with leaves. Locally grown trees and plants are best for windbreaks.

1.What is a windbreak according to the passage?

A. A windbreak is a concrete wall to prevent the strong winds.

B. A windbreak is a wood with different kinds of trees.

C. A windbreak is a wall of trees to hold soil in place.

D. A windbreak is a wall of wind to fight wind from the opposite way.

2.When can windbreaks be most effective?

A. The trees are planted one by one.

B. The trees and plants grow in a line.

C. The trees grow as high as they can.

D. Windbreaks allow a little wind to blow through.

3.Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. A windbreak is one of the best forms of soil conversation.

B. A windbreak is very good for growing grains such as wheat.

C. One line of trees is enough for soil protection.

D. Locally grown trees and plants are the top choice for a windbreak.

Now scientists believe that global warming affects hibernating(冬眠的) animals, causing them to wake up earlier. While this may seem a little concern, it is in fact a significant environmental problem. The shortened hibernation (冬眠) period could actually lead to significant declines in the populations of several species.

Some of the first concrete evidence of the phenomenon came from Colorado, where researchers at the Rocky Mountain Biological lab have been observing marmot(旱獭) hibernation behavior since the 1970s. In the early days of their studies, marmots generally hibernated several weeks into the month of May. Nowadays, however, temperatures in the area have risen by 2.5 degrees Fahrenheit(华氏度), and the marmots are waking up about a month earlier.

At least the marmots are still hibernating. Several other animals have not been hibernating at all recently. Brown bears in the Spanish Cantabrian Mountains did not hibernate last year. In parts of the United States, chipmunks (花鼠) also skipped the hibernation period. The bears seem to have survived without losing many individuals. The chipmunks, however, were not so lucky. Many of the animals died of starvation during the winter.

The problem with animals waking up early, or skipping hibernation altogether, lies with the creatures’ metabolism(新陈代谢). When an animal hibernates, their metabolism drops significantly. The animals’ heart rate slows, and they require very little energy to live. When the animals awake from their winter slumber, their metabolism returns to normal.

But while their metabolism may be as active as it was before hibernation, food sources aren’t as available as they were before. A marmot may wake up when temperatures get warmer, thinking it’s spring, but plants will not have gotten the amount of sun they need to signal their spring period of growth. So until the plants grow, the marmots have no reliable food source.

Many scientists believe the problem will continue to get worse. In addition to changes in hibernation patterns, some believe that other animals will also begin to change their migration patterns or begin to give birth earlier. For many biologists, that’s a scary prospect. Terry Root, an animal expert at Stanford University, said: “I do think what we will be facing is the extinction of many species."

1.What is the viewpoint of the writer?

A. Global warming will continue to get worse as time goes on.

B. Global warming will lead to shortened hibernation of some animals.

C. Shortened hibernation will result in declines in the population of animals.

D. Some animals will skip hibernation altogether.

2.The writer sets the example of the marmot so as to ________.

A. explain that global warming influences animals’ hibernation

B. indicate that the weather gets warmer and warmer now

C. show that the weather in the United States is quite different

D. say some animals do not hibernate now due to warm weather

3.Why can’t marmots find enough food when they wake up?

A. Because there are too many marmots in the wild now.

B. Because plants haven’t received enough sunlight for spring growth.

C. Because winter days end much earlier than before.

D. Because more and more animal species skip hibernation now.

4.Terry Root holds a(n) ________ attitude towards the future of animals.

A. optimisticB. doubtfulC. pessimisticD. sensitive

To understand how Americans think about things, it is necessary to understand "the point". Americans mention it often: "Let's get right to the point." They will say, "My point is…" "What's the point of all this?"

The "point" is the idea or piece of information that Americans suppose is, or should be, at the center of people's thinking, writings, and spoken comments. Speakers and writers are supposed to "make their points clear", meaning that they are supposed to say or write clearly the idea or piece of information they wish to express.

People from many other cultures have different ideas about the point. Africans traditionally tell stories that express the thoughts they have in mind, rather than stating the point clearly. Japanese traditionally speak indirectly, leaving the listener to figure out what the point is. Thus, while an American might say to a friend, "I don't think that coat goes very well with the rest of your outfit," a Japanese might say, "Maybe another coat would look even better than the one you have on." Americans value a person who "gets right to the point". Japanese are likely to consider such a person insensitive if not rude.

The Chinese and Japanese languages are characterized by vagueness and ambiguity. The precision and directness Americans associate with "the point" cannot be achieved, at least not with any grace, in Chinese and Japanese. Speakers of those languages thus have to learn a new way of reasoning and expressing their ideas if they are going to communicate satisfactorily with Americans.

1.According to the passage, Americans expect speakers and writers to ________.

A. express their personal views

B. be clear about their main ideas

C. be honest about their true feelings

D. give as much information as possible

2.Which of the following peoples will tell a story to express what they have in mind?

A. Americans.B. Chinese.C. Japanese.D. Africans.

3.The underlined word "outfit" in the third paragraph probably means ________.

A. appearanceB. behaviorC. speechD. clothes

4.In order to communicate with Americans satisfactorily, speakers of Chinese need to ________.

A. mind their manners

B. explain their reasons clearly

C. change their ways of expressing ideas

D. be careful about their choices of words
