Mrs Young was eighty. Her husband died when she was fifty – three and he left her an old car he had had for six years. She learned to drive and loved very much. She liked driving very fast, and was proud of the fact that she had never been caught for a driving offence(违章).
Then one day she nearly lost her record(纪录). A police car followed her, and the policeman in it saw her pass a red light without stopping and she was taken before a judge. The man looked at her and said that she was too old to drive a car, and the reason why she had not stopped at the red light was most probably that her eyes had become weak with old age, so that she had simply not seen it.
When the judge had finished what he was saying, Mrs Young opened her handbag she was carrying and took out her sewing. Without saying a word, she chose a needle(针) with a very small eye(针眼), and threaded it at her first try.
When she had finished it, she took the thread out of the needle again and handed both the needle and the thread to the judge, saying, “Now it’s your turn. I suppose you drive a car, and that your eyesight is good.”

I suddenly heard an elephant crying as though frightened. Looking down,I immediately recognized that something was wrong, and ran down to the edge of the near bank. There I saw Ma Sha with her three? month? old calf struggling in the fast rising water, and it was a life and death struggle. Her calf was floating and screaming with fear. Ma Sha was as near to the far bank as she could get, holding her whole body against the rushing water, and keeping the calf pressed against her huge body. There was a sudden rise in the water and the calf was washed clean (完全地)over the mother's body and was gone. Ma Sha turned quickly to reach it and pressed the calf with her head and trunk (象鼻) against the rocky bank. Then with a huge effort, she picked it up in her trunk and tried until she was able to place it on a narrow shelf of rock.
Just at this moment, she fell back into the river. If she were carried down,it would be certain death. I knew,as well as she did, that there was one spot (地点) where she could get up the bank, but it was on the other side from where she had put her calf.
While I was wondering what I could do next,I heard the sound of a mother's love. Ma Sha had crossed the river and got up the bank and was making her way back as fast as she could, roaring (吼叫) all the time, but to her calf it was music.
