Besides calling 911, here is what to do in some life-threatening emergencies when no one is around to help.

Lost in the wilderness

First, you've got to acknowledge(承认)you're in trouble.Stay where you can be seen clearly and remember to rest.Keeping a sense of humor helps too-it reduces stress and helps creative thinking. In a wide open area, make a colorful cross out of rocks to show your present position.

Choking

Aim to hit the top of the chair against your stomach in the soft part below the bony upside-down V of the ribs(肋骨).Make a sudden push against the chair. If you still can't breathe after six tries, call 911, even if you can't talk.Write the word choking somewhere nearby, and leave the line open until help arrives.

Severe bleeding

Use your hand or clean cotton, or paper towels, or a scarf, or any cloth you can find, and push down on the wound until the bleeding stops. But if you put a bandage around your leg tightly, you're going to close the vessels(血管)to the entire leg.In this way, you could lose your foot.

Bear attack

If you surprise a bear, don't run away. That invites an attack.Instead, stand up and back away slowly without looking the bear in the eyes.If it does charge at you, stick out your chest, raise your arms, and spread your legs.Shout at the bear to frighten it.If it’s going to attack, lie face down, with your hands held firmly behind your neck.Play dead until you’re sure the bear is gone.

It is men’s nature to live together in families and tribes(部落), and cities and nations, and therefore men have learned to prize those qualities in each other which make social life the happiest and best.
Of these qualities one of the most important is sympathy-fellow-feeling. If a man had no fellow-feeling, we should call him “inhuman”; he would be no true man. We think so much of this quality that we call a kind man “human”-that is, man-like in his conduct, first to other men, and afterwards to all living things.
If you are cruel to animals, you are not likely to be kind or thoughtfull to men; and if you are thoughtful towards men, you are not likely to be cruel and thoughtful towards animals. This is why the wise man of old wrote, “The merciful man is merciful to his beast.”
What a pleasure it is also to be loved by our pets or domestic animals; and to feel that we are caring for them and are deserving of their love; or to watch the ways of wild creatures, and gradually to make friends with them!
Treating animals kindly does not mean that we must never inflict any pain on them. We ourselves are trained by pains as well as by pleasures; so too, punishment is sometimes needed to train our dogs and horses to obey us. We endure pains at the hands of the surgeon, to cure some wound or to heal some disease; so too, animals must submit to being doctored.
We send out our bravest men to face wounds, sickness and death, for the good of the nation; so too, we let our horses share the risk of battle. For similar reasons, we cannot hesitate to destroy dangerous creatures like wolves and show senseless ferocity(残忍). It is no excuse to say that these animals deserve to be treated cruelly on account of their own cruelty. They are not really cruel, for they tear and kill not from love of unkindness, but because they must do so in order to live.

Even if you are an experienced backpacker or climber, you need to know what to do if something goes wrong. It is not that Alaska is that much more dangerous than other places. It is no more hazardous than elsewhere,as long as the proper precautions(预防措施)are taken. So, being prepared is crucial to ensure a safe trip.
First of all, make sure you pack everything you will need for your trip.Even if you are traveling by car, pack clothes and gear for backpacking.Because of the bad weather, cars break down frequently. Pack a survival(生存)kit full with:a down coat, boots ,mittens, a hat, snow-pants,sleeping bags, candles,a flashlight, and high-energy food. If you are traveling by car , also pack extra belts, a shovel, and a chain.
If you are camping or hiking, make sure you know how to avoid bears. If you are lost in the wilderness, there is no doubt you will encounter them.
However, there is no need to be nervous.Just take these precautions:make noise as you walk, bears will avoid you;cook your food away from where you sleep, and store your food away from where you sleep,so the bears are not attracted. Both of these should keep the bear away. However,if you do encounter a bear, there are two different schools of thought. One is to make noise and scare the bear away. The other is to stand still and speak softly to get the bear to leave. If you are dealing with a brown bear, you can climb a tree, since it cannot follow. But,black bears can climb. If for some reason the bear attacks, play dead.Try to protect your head and neck, and hopefully the bear will leave its“dead” prey.

A new hotel is set to open in a faraway village in northern Sweden, which intends to change the simple treehouse into a world—class hotel for travelers who enjoy special designs.
Treehotel, which lies in Harads about 60 km south of the Arctic Circle, will be made up of four rooms when it opens on July 17th:the Cabin, the Blue Cone, the Nest and the Mirrorcube.
Two more are due to open in October—the UFO and A Room With a View.

A German company was concerned about talks in Moscow trying to sell some 100 million dollars worth of equipment to a Russian State company. Talks went smoothly but differences remained. So Martin Bayer himself, the CEO of the German Company, decided to come to Moscow to head the talks. Besides caring about his business, the CEO wanted to go to Russia to hunt bears.
Martin Bayer was one of the greatest hunters of our time (and the Russians knew about it). He went to the Sahara more than hundred times and hunted lions, crocodiles; he hunted polar bears in the North Pole and tigers in the rain forests of India. But he had never hunted Russian bears.
So the Russians decided to organize a bear hunt for Mr. Bayer to sweeten the talks. This wasn't a simple task. Some people in the west still believe that bears may be found and seen everywhere in Russian cities just like squirrels may be seen in our back yards. This is not true. The closest place one may find bears in the wild is maybe 2,500 miles away from Moscow. However, a solution was quickly found. The Russian businessmen went to Moscow Circus(马戏团)and for $2,000 bought a very old bear. This bear used to amuse and amaze audiences in many countries for 30 years, but got and looked too old, and was retired.
“Be careful, the Russian bears are very dangerous, and frightening,” they told to Mr. Bayer. “If compared to the Russian bears, your African lions are nothing more than harmless cats.” The bear was brought to a forest 50 miles from Moscow and was left there. Mr. Bayer was told that bears were plentiful in that forest and that many cattle and even people had been eaten in the surrounding villages.
Meanwhile, an 18-year old female drove through the forest on a motorcycle and suddenly saw a bear (no bears had been seen in those places for 200 years). She was frightened, fell, left her helmet and her motorcycle and ran away.
Mr. Bayer was excited and ready to hunt. This could become the most successful part of his extraordinary hunting experience. The next moment Mr. Bayer saw a bear in a helmet driving on a motorcycle through the forest in front of him. The bear had a happy expression on his face, as he was doing something he had been doing in the circus for 30 years: circling on a motorcycle!
Mr. Bayer lives in a private mental institution near Hamburg happily ever after. The equipment was never sold to Russia. It was sold to Iraq instead.
1. Why did the Russians invite Mr. Bayer to hunt bears?
A. Russian bears are famous for their cruelty.
B. They managed to find a bear for hunting.
C. They expected the trade to be successful.
D. There was a bear in Moscow Circus.
2. Why did the Russians say “Be careful, the Russian bears are very dangerous, and frightening”?
A. To tell Mr. Bayer that many people had been killed by bears.
B. To make Mr. Bayer feel the hunting really challenging.
C. To warn Mr. Bayer to mind his safety while hunting.
D. To tell Mr. Bayer that the bear is really dangerous.
3. We can infer from the last paragraph that __________.
A. Mr. Bayer has gone ma
B. the bear injured him badly
C. he has worked in a mental institution since then
D. the trade has gone smoothly between Russian and Iraq
4. Which would be the best title of the passage?
A. Mr. Bayer, a Brave Hunter     B. Russian Bears, Dangerous Animals
C. Don’t Hunt in Russia       D. Don’t Deal with the Russians
