Tears are nature's way making us feel comfortable. When our eyes are made uncomfortable by some small pieces of pollution, or when we are cutting onions, or when we are exhausted and “red-eyes” from overwork and late hours, tears from in our eyes to clean and refresh them.

Tears are also a sign of strong emotion. We cry when we are sad and we cry when we are happy.

And tears seem to be uniqueness(唯一)of human. We know that animals also experience emotion—fear, pleasure, loneliness—but they do not shed(流)tears. From this we can conclude that tears are closely related to the emotional and biological makeup of the human species.

Biologically speaking, tears are actually drops of saline fluid, which is a little bit salty, produced by a gland(腺)in the body. Because salt is an important component, tears may actually constitute the most conclusive evidence that the human animals are the end product of a long evolutionary(进化的)process that began in the sea.

And it is clear that, in addition to(除了)the emotional benefits, the shedding of tears has a specific biological function as well. Through tears, we can eliminate from our body certain chemicals which build up in response to stress and cerate a chemical imbalance in the body. Crying actually makes us feel better by correcting that imbalance and making us feel good again. And thus the emotional and the biological functions of tears merge(合并)into one and make us even more “human” than we would otherwise be.

【题目】Tourism Problems

Without proper planning, tourism can cause problems. For example, too many tourists can crowd public places that are also enjoyed by the inhabitants(居民)of a country. If tourists create too much traffic, the inhabitants become annoyed and unhappy. They begin to dislike tourists and to treat them impolitely. They forget how much tourism can help the country's economy(经济). It is important to think about the people of a destination(目的地)country and how tourism affects them. Tourism should help a country keep the customs and beauty that attract tourists. Tourism should also advance the wellbeing of local inhabitants.

Too much tourism can be a problem. If tourism grows too quickly, people must leave other jobs to work in the tourism industry. This means that other parts of the country's economy can suffer.

On the other hand, if there is not enough tourism, people will lose jobs. Businesses will also lose money. It costs a great deal of money to build a large hotels, airports, air terminals, firstclass roads, and other support facilities(设施)needed by tourist attractions. For example, a major internationalclass tourism hotel needs as much as 50 thousand dollars per room to build. If this room is not used most of the time, the owners of the hotel will lose money.

Building a hotel is just a beginning. There must be many support facilities as well, including roads to get to the hotel, electricity, sewers to handle waste, and water. All of these support facilities cost money. If they are not used because there are not enough tourists, jobs and money are lost.

【题目】阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中选出最佳选项。

(2012年北京模拟)Employment practices often reflect the needs of employers several decades ago. Times have changed. And so too has the Canadian workforce. Yet many employment practices have not kept pace with this change. For example, some work environments and washrooms designed for able-bodied workers seldom accommodate people who use a wheelchair.

Modernizing these practices is what employment equality is about. For example, making sure work benches and washrooms are adapted for disabled people entering the workplace, paving the way for workers who become disabled on the job. By doing so,any given group of people-formerly discriminated against-now has access to better employment opportunities.

The objective,of course,is to make the workplace reflect Canadian society. However, this does not necessarily mean setting and enforcing quotas(实行配额).Rather,it means identifying the barriers to employment and designing measures, with achievable goals and clear timetables,to remove them.

For example, according to the Canadian Union of Public Employees-Canada's largest union,it would be unrealistic in the short term to insist that because half of the working age population is women, that half of the employees of an engineering firm should be women. At this moment, there would not be enough qualified female engineers.

A reasonable numerical goal would be based on the number of women who actually are engineers(8%) and those who are studying to become engineers(25%).A short term goal of 13% would be appropriate without running the risk of hiring unqualified people.

Equally important is to ensure people who have been disadvantaged the chance to become qualified for new opportunities. If aboriginal peopl(土著居民),for example, can't qualify for certain jobs because they haven't had access to appropriate educational opportunities, then an employment equality program would have to address that problem with training programs.

Employment laws in this country cannot be considered displeasing if they guarantee all Canadians fair and equal access to the workforce.
