With the Tesla Roadster and other plugin (插入式) electric vehicles hitting the road, demand is
growing for accessible refueling points to recharge them. Carbon Day Automotive,a Chicagobased
company, has now demonstrated a solarpowered recharging point, known as the Solar PlugIn Station,
which lets motorists easily charge their cars using electricity that has been produced without any
environmental damage.
The Solar PlugIn Station has gone on show in Chicago as part of the city's bid to host the 2016
Olympic Games. According to Carbon Day Automotive, the Solar PlugIn Station on show in Chicago
is part of the vital infrastructure (基础设施) required for electric vehicles in Chicago and was the focus
of a recent visit by the International Olympic Committee.
These solarpowered electricity points will be used daily to fuel the city's electric vehicles with power
from the sun. By producing the electricity from pollutionfree solar cell, the CO2 emissions are reduced to
zero.
"Solar energy and electric vehicles are a partnership that is one more step to reducing our dependence
on foreign oil," says Richard Lowenthal,CEO of Coulomb Technologies. Coulomb Technologies recently
developed the components (部件) required for individual recharging stations, marketed as ChargePoint
Networked Charging Stations. Carbon Day Automotive is the Midwest distributor for the ChargePoint
stations.
The Solar PlugIn Station consists of giant solar panels (电池板) that shade the tiny ChargePoint
Networked Charging Station. The solar panel is connected to an underground battery pack, ready for
everyday refueling.
"Without these stations it would be like driving around in a traditional car without the availability of
gas stations," says Scott Emalfarb,CEO at Carbon Day."The day of true plugin electric vehicles will be
here sooner than most people realize and the world needs to be ready to accommodate them."
1. The Solar PlugIn Station is used as part of the bid to host the Olympics mainly because ______.
A. it's environmentally friendly
B. it makes up for the lack of electricity
C. it's a new idea and attracts people's attention
D. it brings convenience to electric vehicle users
2. The passage implies that when the Solar PlugIn Station becomes popular,________.
A. more visitors will come to Chicago
B. more space for electric vehicles will be needed
C. the citizens of Chicago will be able to go to work faster
D. the cost of electric vehicles will be lower than traditional cars
3. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Chicago Will Soon Be Full of Electric Vehicles
B. Chicago Calls on People to Buy Electric Vehicles
C. Chicago Fights for Its Bid to Host the 2016 Olympics
D. Chicago Shows Its Solarpowered Recharging Stations

There’s a box of chocolates in the fridge. It’s been there for more than a week since I was given it as a present. I do love chocolates, but they make me fat if I eat too many! Can I control myself? If I eat one, will I have to eat all of them?
My son Harry is obsessed with playing Wii(/wi:/, 任天堂的一款游戏机) games. Sometimes, it’s difficult to get him to concentrate on his homework because he wants to play some more.
Last week I had to wake up a student in my class. I asked him why he was so tried and he said he had stayed up late to play his favourite Internet game, Farmville. He said he just couldn’t stop playing it! Now his academic work is suffering because he can’t control his urge to play games.
What my son, my student, and I myself need is simply self-control.
In the late 1960’s, American psychologist Walter Mischel launched an experiment about self-control. He left a group of four-year-olds in a room and told them that if they could wait 20 minutes, they could have two marshmallows, a kind of sweet. If they couldn’t wait, he would only give them one.
In videos of the experiment, you can see children squirming, kicking, hiding their eyes—desperately trying to control themselves. Some did wait patiently, while others couldn’t wait a single minute.
Years later, the self-controlled children turned out to get higher SAT scores and got into better colleges. The children who couldn’t wait were more likely to become bullies.
So, the chocolates are still in the fridge. My son Harry is doing his homework with a promise that he can play on the Wii later, and my student says he will try harder to control himself. We all have our own temptations. But if we can control them, we will achieve more.
56. Which of the following is different from the other three?
A. The writer.                                          B. Harry.
C. The writer’s student.                             D. Walter Mischel.
57. We can know from paragraph 5 to paragraph 7 that____________.
A. all the children got two marshmallows
B. all the children waited patiently
C. self-control can help children succeed later
D. the children who lack self-control get higher SAT scores
58. Which of the following statement is true?
A. The writer is addicted to Wii.
B. The writer’s son is addicted to Farmville.
C. The writer’s student is addicted to chocolates.
D. The writer’s student is addicted to Farmville.
59. What does the underlined word mean in paragraph 5?

BEIJING-Apple Inc is one step closer to beginning sales of iPad2 tablet computers with cellular
network compatibility (兼容) for the first time in the Chinese mainland, where the consumer-electronics
giant is in the midst of an aggressive expansion.
According to China's Telecommunication Equipment Certification Center, a device by Apple with
third-generation high-speed wireless data capabilities was issued the network access license needed for
the company to begin official sales in China. The device, listed under model number "A1396", is
compatible with the 3G standard WCDMA, and would work with the cellular network operated by
Apple's local iPhone partner, China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd.
       China Unicom declined  to comment.
Apple already offers the 3G iPad2 in Hong Kong through its partners, but currently only offers
Wi-Fi versions of the device in the Chinese mainland. Still, consumers in China, which according to
research firm IDC surpassed  the US as the world's largest PC market in the second quarter, have been
purchasing 3G tablets through unofficial channels.
Separately, Apple spokeswoman Carolyn Wu said on Sept 6 that the company's first Hong Kong
store, set to open this quarter, will be located in the city's central shopping and business district in the
International Finance Center's upscale (高档的) IFC mall, a commercial center and sightseeing spot
along the city's waterfront. Wu also said that Apple is planning a new store in Shanghai later this quarter,
which will be its biggest store in China. She declined to give more details or to comment on the 3G iPad2.
Apple currently has four full-service Apple stores in the mainland, which receive the most traffic of
any Apple stores in the world. The company otherwise relies on resellers to get its products into the
market.
The new stores reflect Apple's confidence in rising demand for its products such as smart phones
and tablet computers. Sales in the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan helped boost (增长) the
company's third-quarter results, newly appointed Chief Executive Tim Cook said in July. China revenue (收益) surged (激增) six-fold to about $3.8 billion during the three months ended June 25.
"This has been a substantial (重大) opportunity for Apple and I firmly believe that we're just
scratching the surface right now," Cook said at the time, referring to strong sales in China. "I see an
incredible opportunity for Apple there."
