【题目】 Today's personal computers are very different from the huge machines that were born during World War II-and the difference isn't only in their size. By the 1970s, these early PCs could not perform many of the tasks that today's computers can. Users could only do mathematical calculations(数学计算) and play simple games. Today PCs are used in many different kinds of ways. At home and at work, we use our PCs to do almost everything. It is nearly impossible to imagine modern life without them.
The earliest computers were not "personal" in any way: They were large and expensive, and they required a team of engineers and other experts to keep them running. One of the first and most famous of these, the Electronic Numerical Integrator Analyzer and Computer (ENIAC), was built at the University of Pennsylvania. ENIAC cost ﹩500, 000, weighed 30 tons and took up nearly 2, 000 square feet of floor space.
ENIAC and other early computers proved that the machines were worth so much money, space and manpower they needed. For example, ENIAC could solve in 30 seconds a problem that could take a team of human "computers" 12 hours to complete. At the same time, new technologies were making it possible to build smaller computers.
But one of the most important of the inventions that make way for the PC revolution was the microprocessor(微处理器). Microprocessors were the size of a nail. They could run the computer's programs, remember information and manage data(数据) all by themselves.
These new ideas made it cheaper and easier to produce computers than ever before. As a result, the smaller, cheaper "microcomputer"-soon known as the "personal computer"-was born. Today, portable computers, smart phones and ipads allow us to have a PC with us wherever we go.
【1】What's mainly talked about in the first paragraph? ______
A.An even more relaxing lifestyle without PCs.
B.PCs can be made full use of to do everything.
C.Differences between modern and early PCs.
D.The difficult situation of PCs being born.
【2】What do we know about the earliest computers? ______
A.It was easy to control them.B.They took up too much room.
C.Nobody could afford one.D.They were built by universities.
【3】Why does the writer take ENIAC for example? ______
A.To predict high technology will make computers smaller.
B.To show computers are really smarter than human beings.
C.To explain why computers could deal with any problem.
D.To prove spending money on early computers was meaningful.
【4】Which of the following makes the biggest contribution to microcomputers? ______
A.Microprocessors.B.Programs.C.Money.D.Imagination.
【答案】
【1】B
【2】D
【3】D
【4】A
At home and at work, we use our PCs to do almost everything. It is nearly impossible to imagine modern life without them.(无论是在家里还是在工作中,我们几乎可以用电脑做任何事情。几乎难以想象没有它们的现代生活)可知本段主要讲述了个人电脑可以用来做任何事情。故选B。
【2】细节理解题。根据第二段中One of the first and most famous of these, the Electronic Numerical Integrator Analyzer and Computer (ENIAC), was built at the University of Pennsylvania.(其中最早也是最著名的电子数字积分分析仪和计算机(ENIAC)就是在宾夕法尼亚大学制造的)可知最早的计算机是由大学建造的。故选D。
【3】推理判断题。根据第三段中ENIAC and other early computers proved that the machines were worth so much money, space and manpower they needed. For example, ENIAC could solve in 30 seconds a problem that could take a team of human "computers" 12 hours to complete.( ENIAC和其他早期的计算机证明了这些机器的价值,它们需要大量的金钱、空间和人力。例如,ENIAC可以在30秒内解决一个需要人类“计算机”团队12小时才能完成的问题)可知作者要ENIAC为例是为了证明在早期电脑上花钱是有意义的。故选D。
【4】细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中But one of the most important of the inventions that make way for the PC revolution was the microprocessor(微处理器).(但是为个人电脑革命开路的最重要的发明之一是微处理器)可知微处理器对微型计算机的贡献最大。故选A。

【题目】Are you preparing for a big test? If so, you may want to go to play some basketball in between hitting the books. Doctors are starting to find more and more information that suggests a connection between exercise and brain development. Judy Cameron, a scientist at Oregon Health and Science University, studies brain development. According to her research, it seems that exercise can make blood vessels, including those in the brain, stronger and more fully developed. Dr. Cameron is sure that this allows people who exercise to think better. As she says, “While we already know that exercise is good for the heart, exercise can actually cause physical changes in the brain.”
The effects of exercise on brain development can even be seen in babies. Babies who do activities that require a lot of movement show greater brain development than babies who are less physically active. Even a little movement can show big results. Margaret Barnes, a scientist, also believes in the importance of exercise. She thinks that many learning disabilities that children have in primary school or high school can result from a lack of movement as babies. Babies need movement that encourages and excites their five senses. They need to set up a connection between motion and memory. In this way, as they get older, children will begin to connect physical activity with higher learning,” says Margaret.
Older people can develop their brains as well. Cornell University studied a group of seniors who have a short-term memory increase of up to 40 percent after exercising just three hours a week. The exercise does not have to be very difficult, but it does have to increase the heart rate. Also, just like the motion for babies, exercise for older people should not be too simple. Learning some new skills or actions, such as with yoga or tai-chi helps to open up memory paths in the brain that may not have been used for a long time. For most people, any type of physical activity that increases the heart rate is helpful. The main aim is to increase the brain’s flow of blood. And your brain can benefit from as little as two to three hours of exercise a week.
【1】What is the main idea of this passage?
A. Exercise makes people strong.
B. How one can get good scores in a test.
C. Exercise can help the brain develop.
D. Brain can change one’s memory.
【2】Why is yoga suggested for the old?
A. Because it does good to the joints of old people.
B. Because it does not increase the heart rate.
C. Because it can help learn new actions.
D. Because it can be done in groups.
【3】For most people, the smallest amount of exercise required to gain any benefit is _____.
A. two hours per week B. 40 hours per week
C. three hours per day D. 40 hours per month

【题目】 Experts are warning about the risks of extreme picky eating after a teenager developed permanent sight loss after living on a diet of chips and crisps.
Since leaving primary school, the teen had been eating only French fries, white bread, as well as an occasional slice of ham or a sausage.
The adolescent, who cannot be named, had seen his doctor at the age of 14 because he had been feeling tired and unwell. At that time he was diagnosed with lack of vitamin B12 and put on supplements, but he did not stick with the treatment or improve his poor diet.
Three years later, he was taken to the Bristol Eye Hospital because of progressive sight loss. Dr Denize Atan, who treated him at the hospital, said: "His diet was only a portion of chips from the local fish and chip shop every day. He also used to snack on chips, white bread and sometimes slices of ham or sausage, and not really any fruit and vegetables."
The teen explained this as a dislike to certain kinds of food that he really could not tolerate, and so chips and crisps were really the only types of food that he wanted and felt that he could eat.
Dr Aan rechecked the young man's vitamin levels and said "he was low in B12 as well as some other important vitamins and minerals - copper, selenium and vitamin D. He was not over or underweight, but was severely malnutritional from his eating disorder. He had lost minerals from his bone, which was really quite shocking for a boy of his age.”
"He had blind spots right in the middle of his vision," said Dr Atari's assistant. "That means he can't drive and would find it really difficult to read, watch TV or recognize faces, but he can walk around on his own because he has got peripheral(周边的)vision.
The condition the young man has is treatable if diagnosed early. Left too long, however, the nerve fibres in the optic nerve(视神经)die and the damage becomes permanent.
