The night was dark, though sometimes the moving clouds allowed a star or two to be seen in the sky. The poor man held on to any bit of 1 they could find. They called to the Marie for 2 , but she was far 3 the reach of the human voice. At one o'clock in the morning suddenly some 4 were seen in the distance: another ship! The shouts of the 5 were heard on board, and willing hands pulled them out of the water. The 6 of the ship that had arrived at the scene 7 to save their lives was the Ellen. What had 8 her to the exact spot 9 the darkness and the pathless sea? Her captain had known 10 of the wreck (沉船) and had, indeed, 11 to sail away from it. But let him speak for himself.
“ 12 I was forced by the wind to change my course, a small bird flew across the ship once or twice and then flew at my face. I 13 of this until exactly the same thing happened a second time, 14 caused me to think it rather 15 . While I was thus 16 , the same bird, for the third time, made its appearance and flew 17 in the same way as before. I was then 18 to change my course back to the original one. I had not gone far 19 I heard a strange voice; and when I tried to 20 where they came from, I found I was in the middle of people who had been shipwrecked. I immediately did my best to save them.”

1.D 提示:hold on to意为“紧紧地抓住”。 3.C 提示:beyond the reach of意为“在……范围之外”。人们向“玛丽号”船求救,然而船上的人们根本听不到他们的呼救声。 4.B 提示:lights的意思是“灯光”。C项有一定干扰性。从空后的another ship看,C项不合题意。 5.D 提示:其他选项均有较大的干扰性。联系上下文,这些人的身份我们一直不知道,因此D项为最佳选项。 6.A 提示:the Ellen是船的名字,因此,此空选name。 7.D 提示:in time及时;ahead of time提前;at times有时;on time准时。 8.A 提示:“是什么把她(船)带到这个地点的?” 9.C 提示:through the darkness and the pathless sea意为“穿过黑夜和茫茫大海”。 10.B 提示:从空后的“had,indeed, 46 (attempted) to sail away from it”及下一段,我们可以知道,船长事先对此事一无所知。 12.A 提示:just as在这里引导时间状语从句。 14.A 提示:which在这里引导非限制性定语从句,which指代“the same thing happened a second time”的内容。 where they had come from是宾语从句。 |

Americans often say that there are only two things a person can be sure of in life: death and taxes. Many people feel that the United States has the worst taxes in the world.
Taxes are the money that people pay to support their government. There are generally three levels of government in the United States: federal(联邦的), state, and city; therefore, there are three types of taxes.
Salaried people who earn more than four to five thousand per year must pay a certain part of their salaries to the federal government. The percentage varies for different people. It depends on the salaries. The federal government has a two-level income tax: that is, 15 or 28 percent. $17, 850 is the cut off. The tax rate is 15 percent below $17, 850 and 28 percent above.
The second tax is for the state government: New York, California, or any of the other forty-eight states. Some states have an income tax similar to that of the federal government. Of course, the percentage for the state tax is lower. Other states have a sales tax, which is a percentage charged to any item which people buy in the state. Some states use income tax and sales tax to raise their revenues(税收).
The third tax is for the city. This tax comes in two forms: property tax(residents who own a home have to pay taxes on it)and excise tax(货物税), which is collected on vehicles in a city. The cities use this money for education, police, public works, etc.
Since Americans pay such nigh taxes, they often feel that they are working one day each week just to pay their taxes. People always complain about taxes. They often say that the government misuses their tax dollars. They all believe that taxes are too high in this country.

For more than six million American children, coming home after school means coming home to an empty house. Some deal with the situation by watching TV.Some may hide. But all of them have something in common. They spend part of each day alone. They’re called latchkey children. They’re children who look after themselves while their parents work and their bad condition has become a subject of concern (关心). Lynette Long was once the principal of an elementary school. She said, “We had a school rule against wearing jewelry. A lot of the kids had chains around their necks with keys attached. I was often telling them to put them inside their shirts. There were so many keys that it never came to my mind what they meant.” Slowly, she learned they were house keys.
She and her husband began talking to the children who had them. They learned of the effect working couples and single parents had on their children. Fear is the biggest problem faced by the children at home alone. One in each three latchkey children the Longs talked to are reported to be scared. Many had nightmares and were worried about their own safety.
The most common way latchkey children deal with their fears is by hiding. It might be in a shower stall under a bed, in a closet. The second is TV. They'll often play it at high volume.
It's hard to get statistics (numbers) on latchkey children, the Longs learned. Most parents are slow to admit they leave their children alone.
