This is a true story which happened in the States. 1 man came out of his home to admire his new truck. To his puzzlement, his three-year-old son was 2 (happy) hammering dents(凹痕) into the shiny paint of the truck. The man ran to his son, knocked him away, hammered the little boy's hands into pulp(果浆汁) as 3 (punish). When the father calmed down, he rushed his son to the hospital.

Although the doctor tried desperately to save the crushed bones, he finally had to cut the fingers from both the boy's hands. When the boy 4 (wake) up from the operation and saw his bandaged stubs, he innocently said, “Daddy, I'm sorry about your truck, 5 when are my fingers going to grow back?”

The father went home and committed suicide.

Think about this story the next time someone steps on your 6 (foot) or you wish to take revenge(报复). Think first 7 you lose your patience with someone you love. Trucks can be repaired, but 8 (break) bones and hurt feelings often can't. Too often we fail to recognize the difference between the person and the performance. We forget that forgiveness is 9 (great) than revenge.

People make mistakes. We 10 (allow) to make mistakes. But the actions we take while in a rage will impress us forever.

【题目】For almost two months Dominic York, a 23-year-old hairdresser, wandered about hospitals at night, wearing a white coat and pretending he was a doctor. Yesterday he proudly claimed in court that despite his complete lack of medical experience or qualifications, he had saved several people’s lives. He had even been allowed to assist a surgeon during an emergency operation on a patient who was about to die on something she had swallowed.

“I watched one of those TV dramas about a hospital and suddenly I felt like playing one of the roles myself. So I put on a white jacket and a stethoscope(听诊器) and walked around one of the biggest hospitals in London. At first I just watched. Once you learn how doctors talk to patients, nurses and other doctors, it’s easy to take people in,” he said. One of the patients he treated was Laura Kennan. She had been knocked down by a car and fainted. When she came into hospital, York was standing over her.“He looked very professional. He told me his name was Doctor Simon. Then he gave me some sort of injection,” she said. And then he suddenly cleared off when a nurse asked who he was. She didn’t think there was anything wrong. “I would never have realized he was a fake if a policewoman hadn’t showed me his photograph a week later. When the policewoman told me who he really was, I could hardly believe my ears. Judge Raymond Adams told York that he was “shocked and horrified” that he got away with his cheating for so long, and then sentenced him to eighteen months in a special prison for criminals with mental disorders. “I can only hope that his will not lead to further problem. After all, you will have considerable opportunity to study the behavior of the psychiatrists(精神科医生) who will look after you while you are there. If you try to persuade people that you yourself are a psychiatrist after you are set free, I shall make sure that you are given a much longer sentence,” Judge Adams warned York.

【题目】So long as teachers fail to distinguish betweenteaching and learning, they will continue to undertake to do for what only children can do forthemselves. Teaching children to read is not passing reading on to them. It is certainly not endless hours spent in activities about reading. Douglas insists that "reading cannot be taught directly andschools should stop trying to do the impossible."

Teaching and learning are two entirely different processes. They differ in kind and function. The function of teaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for childrento devise the most efficient system for teachingthemselves to read. Teaching is also a publicactivity: It can be seen and observed.

Learning to read involves all that each individualdoes not make sense of the world of printedlanguage. Almost all of it is private, for learningis an occupation of the mind, and that process isnot open to public scrutiny. If teacher and learner roles are not interchangeable, what then can be done through teaching will aid the child inknowledge. Smith has one principal rule for all teaching instructions. "Make learning to readeasy, which means making reading a meaningful, enjoyable and frequent experience for children."

When the roles of teacher and learner are seen forwhat they are, and when both teacher and learner fulfill them appropriately, then much of thepressure and feeling of failure for both iseliminated. Learning to read is made easier whenteachers create an environment where children are given the opportunity to solve the problem oflearning to read by reading.

1The problem with the reading course as mentionedin the first paragraph is that____.

A. it is one of the most difficult school courses

B. students spend endless hours in reading

C. reading tasks are assigned with little guidance

D. too much time is spent in teaching of reading

2The word "scrutiny"(Para.3) most probably means____.

A. inquiry B. observation

C. control D. suspect

A. teachers should do as little as possible inhelping students learn to read

【题目】In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social-progress and prosperity. Others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.

I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.

However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: "I may have lost, but it doesn't matter because I really didn't try." What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistake belief thatone's self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve (缓解) can we discover a new meaning in competition.

【1】What does this text mainly talk about?

A. Competition helps to set up self-respect.

B. People hold different opinions about competition.

C. Competition is harmful to personal quality development.

D. Failures are necessary experience in competition.

2】Some people favor competition because they think it ________.

A. pushes society forward

B. builds up a sense of pride

C. improves social abilities

D. develops people's relationship

3】The underlined phrase “the most vocal” in Paragraph 3 refers to those who ________.

A. try their best to win

B. highly value competition

C. are strongly against competition

D. mostly rely on others for success

4】Which viewpoint does the author agree to?

A. Self-worth relys on winning.

B. Competition leads to unfriendly relationship.

C. Winning should be a life-and-death matter.

D. Fear of failure should be removed in competition.

The book I'm reading of talks about afternoon tea in Britain. It is said to have started in the early 1800's. Have tea in the late afternoon provides a bridge between lunch and dinner, that may not be served until 8 o'clock at night. This custom soon becomes another meal of day. Interesting, it had a connection by the British porcelain (瓷器) industry. Tea in China was traditionally drank from cups without handles. When tea got popular in Britain, there was a crying need for good cup with handles to suit British habits. This made for the grow in the porcelain industry.

【题目】As jewelry designers,my sister Jodie and I are always traveling for work.We need to go to a lot of shows,so we can’t pack lightly and usually bring about four suitcases filled with our work.

Most of our stuff is made from heavy materials and metals. So part of the routine for us when we fly is getting stopped by security. Our jewelry sets off the alarms, and we’ve become accustomed to arriving early to go through private screenings. Most of the time,it’s not troublesome.

However,on our recent trip to a Paris trade show,we were stopped at security and asked to empty our bags. One of the agents walked over to another agent and they started whispering to each other. Both gentlemen came back, and one of them then told us that it seemed that we were carrying a very dangerous object.

My sister and I just said,“Huh?”Of course,we were a little concerned, thinking that maybe someone put something dangerous in one of our bags when we weren’t looking.

One of the agents then started to unpack our bags.I kept asking what he was 1ooking for and then the object in question finally appeared. It was our Cosima necklace. It's a piece of jewelry, with large, metal triangular spikes.

My sister and I 1ooked at each other and breathed a huge sigh of relief. We started laughing and explained to the two male agents that it was just a necklace from our collection.not a weapon of mass destruction. They thought we were lying, and one agent kept repeating that he believed it was a weapon.

I tried to explain that we were jewelry designers going to a trade show, and this was simply a piece from our collection. But the agents didn’t buy it.Then a few women guards came over to assist. One of the women guards was holding an earring up to her ear and another was trying on a ring.Apparently, they liked our stuff.

It was only at this point that the male guards gave up.And I think they also got tired of listening to a bunch of women talk about jewelry. They let us through.

We took the names of the women agents and sent them a piece of jewelry when we got back to say thanks.
