    16．One afternoon last week，I saw three tearful children from my son's school being comforted by teachers．That morning，my 11-year-old had stomach pains，retching（干呕）into a bowl．Talking to other mothers later，I heard about other children with stomachache or difficulty sleeping the night before．
        What caused so much pain？Sports day．Sports day might be necessary at a highly-competitive independent school，but not at a village primary school．For the children who can fly like the wind，sports day cause no problem．For those who are overweight or just not good at sport，it is nightmare（恶梦）．Even for those who enjoy running but fall halfway down the track in front of the entire school and their parents，it can prove a disaster．
        Why do we put our children through this annual suffering？Some may say competition is character building； or it's taking part，not winning，that's important； or that it is a tradition of school life．I just felt great pity for those children in tears or in pain．
        Team games at the end of sports day produced some close races，wild enthusiasm，lots of shouting-and were fun to watch．More importantly，the children who were not so fast or quick at passing the ball were hidden a little from everyone's eyes．Some of them also had the thrill of being on the winning side．
        I wish that sports day could be abandoned and replaced with some other less-competitive event．Perhaps an afternoon of team games，with a few races for those who want them，would be less stressful for the children and a lot more fun to watch．

    1．A world-famous Canadian author，Margaret Atwood，has created the world's first long-distance signing device（装置），the LongPen．
      After many tiring…from city to city，Atwood thought there must be a better way to do them．She hired some technical experts and started her own company in 2004．Together they designed the LongPen．Here's how it works：The author writes a personal message and signature on a computer tablet（手写板） using a special pen．On the receiving end，in another city，a robotic arm fitted with a regular pen signs the book．The author and fan can talk with each other via webcams（网络摄像机） and computer screens．

    Sara tried to befriend her old friend Steve's new wife，but Betty never seemed to have anything to say．While Sara felt Betty didn't hold up her end of the conversation，Betty complained to Steve that Sara never gave her a chance to talk．The problem had to do with expectations about pacing and pausing．
    Conversation is a turn-taking game．When our habits are similar，there's no problem．But if our habits are different，you may start to talk before I'm finished or fail to take your turn when I'm finished．That's what was happening with Betty and Sara．
    It may not be coincidental that Betty，who expected relatively longer pauses between turns，is British，and Sara，who expected relatively shorter pauses，is American．Betty often felt interrupted by Sara．But Betty herself became an interrupter and found herself doing most of the talking when she met a visitor from Finland．And Sara had a hard time cutting in on some speaker s from Latin America or Israel．
    The general phenomenon，then，is that the small conversation techniques，like pacing and pausing，lead people to draw conclusions not about conversational style but about personality and abilities．These habitual differences are often the basis for dangerous stereotyping （思维定式）．And these social phenomena can have very personal consequences．For example，a woman from the southwestern part of the US went to live in an eastern city to take up a job in personnel．When the Personnel Department got together for meetings，she kept searching for the right time to break in--and never found it．Although back home she was considered outgoing and confident，in Washington she was viewed as shy and retiring．When she was evaluated at the end of the year，she was told to take a training course because of her inability to speak up．
    That's why slight differences in conversational style--tiny little things like microseconds of pause-can have a great effect on one's life．The result in this case was a judgment of psychological problems---even in the mind of the woman herself，who really wondered what was wrong with her and registered for assertiveness training．
