【题目】During the school year many parents take on the role of driver as they drive their children from one lesson to another .Understandably so. Many of us want our children to have a little taste of everything, from organized sports to music, dance and more. But we can overdo it, leaving our children feeling a little burnt out, and according to parent educator Diane Loisie ,it’s their school work which suffers the most. “After school, if they’re busy in a number of sporting events, besides they need to do their homework, then the time they’ll feel sleepy is in the classroom. Your child needs free time. So if you’re filling up that after school time, then it’s during the day that they’re going to be taking a break.”

Professor Claire McDermott agrees that there’s a lot to be gained from sometimes putting those scheduled lessons and activities away. “Relaxing time is important for children. It’s time just to do the things they want to do. A child can go up to their room, or they can play around. It doesn’t look like productive time; parents certainly wouldn’t be saying ‘Wow, are they ever learning things now?’ But this relaxing time gives both the body and the brain just a wonderful chance to relax after a day. It helps a child prepare for sleep, but it also helps to understand the learning that’s gone on that day.”

It’s hard to prevent signing our kids up for some activities and lessons. After all, many of us want our children to have a head start in life and the chance to join in great activities in the arts or sports is a part of that. However, Loisie feels that in the long run most children feel better with just a few key activities because it gives them an opportunity to master them. “When we get our children in too many activities because we want our children to experience everything, then what we’re doing is setting them up not to be good at one thing or gaining a skill.” So choose your children’s activities wisely. It may be one of the best things you’ve ever done for your kids… and for the family drivers!

1What is the biggest disadvantage for children to attend too many lessons after school?

A.They can get bored easily about everything.

B.They might have no time to do the homework.

C.They might not pay much attention to learning.

D.They cannot easily focus on learning during the day.

2What should we think of children’s playing around aimlessly?

A.It is productive.B.It is helpful.C.It is a bad habit.D.It is a waste of time.

3Why should parents limit the activities our children attend?

A.Because children have no time.

B.Because children cannot learn many things.

C.Because children do not have enough sleep.

D.Because children cannot focus on too many activities.

4What is the main idea of this passage?

A.Don’t be children’s drivers after school.

B.Choose activities for your children wisely.

C.Make your children learn as much as possible.

D.Let children learn something from various subjects.

【题目】 About 12 years ago, I began making a series of dolls called “Wee Forest Folk”. At first, I made them from cloth but then began using a kind of polymer clay (软陶) called Cernit. The cloth dolls were beautiful, but it was impossible to get the level of details (细节) I can get with clay.

First, I use wire (金属丝) to build the shape of the doll. Then I cover the head, hands, and feet around the wire by using the Cernit. Then I make the doll's clothes myself, using lots of different materials. The completed dolls are fixed onto hardwood bases made by my father, Jim Logan.

Generally, the dolls show older people taking part in traditional activities. I've always had a great respect for the older generation.

Inspiration for the dolls often comes from people I know. Once I was caught looking too closely at the wrinkles (皱纹) on the face of one of my mom's friends. But I explained that her laughter lines made her more attractive.

Now I work as a teacher's assistant, and while I was raising my two daughters, Keri and Sheryl, I could work on the dolls only late at night. The girls loved to come downstairs the next morning to see who'd arrived in the night.

It's the detail that I enjoy working on the most. I once made a fisherman doll for a lady to give her father, including a tiny creel — a basket used by fishermen for carrying fish. When the man got the doll, he immediately opened the creel to see what was inside. Luckily, I'd made a small fish out of Cernit and placed it in the basket.

Hopefully my story will inspire others to try their hand at doll making — I find it very relaxing and interesting.

1The dolls called “Wee Forest Folk” were________

A.totally handmade

B.mainly made of cloth

C.usually for small kids

D.often designed by the author's father

2Why did the author look closely at her mother's friend's face?

A.To guess her age.

B.To get creative ideas.

C.To give her a surprise.

D.To find out why she was so attractive.

3The author tells the story of the fisherman doll to show that________

A.it takes much effort to make a doll

B.it is difficult to satisfy everyone

C.the old also love her dolls

D.her dolls have fine details

【题目】If you thought pilots dimmed(调暗)the lights before takeoff to give you some shuteye, think again. Believe it or not, the dim lighting could actually help save your life in case of a plane emergency.

The dimmed lights before taking off the runway and landing are a flight precaution used to help passengers’ eyes adjust quicker during an emergency escape. “Going from a brightly lit environment to one that’s completely dark would require some time for our eyes to focus and see the escape slide,” Alice Theriault, service director for Air Canada wrote in a press statement. “Since we need to have all the seconds on our side in the event of an emergency, dimming the lights is one of many steps we take to ensure the safety of our customers.”

The phenomenon that your eyes see those strange speckles (小斑点) as your sight adjusts to a dark place after being in a light place is called dark adaptation. It normally takes our eyes about 20 to 30 seconds to see best in a dark room. The brighter the lights, the longer it takes for our eyes to adjust, which is why dimming the plane lights could shorten your “dark adaptation” time since you haven’t been sitting under fluorescent bulbs (荧光灯) all flight.

Not only does dimming lights add valuable time to the escape process, but it reduces the tension on your eyes if you need to look outside, or see the emergency lighting along the passage. “It helps keep you in the right direction.” Patrick Smith, an airline pilot and author of Cockpit Confidential told The Telegraph. “It also makes it easier for flight attendants to assess any outside risks, such as fire or debris, that might affect an escape.” So next time a pilot dims the lights, just know it’s for your safety, even though it creates a gentle atmosphere for your takeoff into the sky.

1The lights are turned down before takeoff to help passengers_______.

A. escape in time of emergency

B. take a short break

C. create a comfortable atmosphere

D. enjoy themselves

2Which of the following is True according to Paragragh 2 and 3?

A. Dimming lights is required when accidents happen.

B. Our eyes need some time to adapt to the change of light.

C. Speckles are caused by the use of dimmed lights.

D. It is required for pilots to turn off lights during the flight.

3What is the function of shortening “dark adaptation” time?

A. Slowing down the landing.

B. Adjusting the plane lights.

C. Keeping passengers calm.

D. Helping the crew judge outside risks.

4What is the text mainly about?

A. A tip to make air travel safer.

B. An emergency event happening on a plane.

C. An explanation of an airline safety measure.

D. A warning message from the pilot.

【题目】Airbags, now found in almost every vehicle, have saved countless lives and largely reduced the severity of injuries in crashes. Similar technology could greatly reduce broken hips (髋部) resulting from a fall, something most seniors fear.

Dr. Robert Buckman and his start-up company, Active Protective in Allentown, Pennsylvania, has developed a promising solution, a wearable airbag that can protect hip bones in the event of a fall. The idea was the result of Dr. Buckman’s years as a doctor at Temple University. He noticed how many elderly people were being brought into hospitals with broken hip due to falls, and how they often never completely recovered from the injuries. He started to ask what he could do for these people, and that was when he started trying to figure out whether there was a way of helping people who were at the highest risk of falling and suffering these kinds of injuries.

The device is worn much like a regular belt, but on the outside of the clothing, and it includes sensors that monitor the movement of hips. If the device detects that the person, is falling, an airbag opens before the person hits the ground, cushioning the fall. When the wearer hits the ground, the bag reduces the force to the hip bones by 90 percent, enough to avoid the majority of hip injuries.

With one out of every three people aged 65 and older suffering serious falls each year, Active Protective has a big market for its wearable device. It also has the potential to sizably reduce hip - related health care expenses: Hip injuries among the elderly cost the US health care system in 2012 $30 billion, which doesn’t include the long-term care expenses associated with the high percentage of patients that can no longer live independently.

1What is the purpose of the Active Protective’s airbag?

A. To avoid hip injuries among seniors.

B. To protect seniors from car accidents.

C. To help seniors with their daily nursing.

D. To help doctors deal with serious injuries.

2What inspired Dr. Robert Buckman to make the device?

A. A report on seniors’ health.

B. A serious fall he experienced.

C. His work experiences as a doctor.

D. Suggestions of seniors at Temple University.

3How does the device mainly work?

A. By predicting road conditions. B. By speeding up bone recovery.

C. By reducing the effects of falling. D. By preventing people from failing.

4What does the author think of the Active Protective’s airbag?

A. It still needs improving.

B. It has a promising future.

C. It may encourage seniors to do exercise.

D. It may increase America’s spend on seniors.
