NASA is moving ahead with plans to put a long-armed Lander on Mars' icy north pole to search for clues for water and possible signs of life.

The 386 million Phoenix Mars is planned to touch down in the Martian arctic in 2008.The stationary probe(探测器)will use its robotic arm to dig into the icy land and pick up soil samples to analyze. In 2002, the Mars Odyssey orbiter spotted evidence of ice-rich soil near the arctic surface.

Scientists hope the Phoenix mission will find clues to the geologic history of water on the Red Planet and determine whether microbes(微生物)existed in the ice.

Phoenix will be the first mission of the Mars Scout program, a renewed, low-cost effort to study the Red Planet.“The Phoenix mission explores new territory in the northern plains of Mars similar to the permafrost(永冻土)regions on Earth,”Peter Smith said.

True to its name, Phoenix rose from the ashes of previous missions. The Lander for Phoenix was built to fly as part of the 2001 Mars Surveyor program. But the program broke down after the well-known disappearance of the Mars Polar Lander in 1999.The Polar Lander lost contact during a landing attempt near the planet's south pole after its rocket engine shut off too early, causing the spacecraft to fall about 130 feet to almost certain destruction.

The Phoenix probe had been in storage at a Lockheed Martin clean room in Denver before it was reused for its present mission. It will carry science instruments that were designed for the Mars Surveyor program including an improved panoramic(全景的)camera and a digging robotic arm.Phoenix will lift off from the Kennedy Space Center in August 2007 and land on the planet nine months later.

What would happen if the sea level rose 25 metres? What kind of planet would we live on if global temperatures went up two or three degrees Celsius?

A recent report by the United States’ National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA) makes depressing reading. It says the earth would be a totally different place if temperatures went up.

James Hansen who led the study explains that, “If warming is kept less than one degree Celsius, the effects of global warming may be relatively manageable.” But he said, “If it rose 2 to 3 degrees the sea level would be about 25 meters higher than today.”

What effects would a 25-metre increase in sea level have? Well, it would leave Shanghai’s under 23 metres of water. Its 17 million residents would have to leave, or be washed away.Around the world billions of people would have to give up their homes and jobs to escape floods.

Humans would not be the only ones affected. If global warming continues, animals and humans will be forced to share a much smaller amount of land. Moreover, along with the rise in world population, can you guess the result of more people living on less land? It will mean greater competition for resources like food and clean water.Competition could easily become conflict.

But Professor Thomas Gale Moore of Stanford University, California, US, disagrees. In an article titled “Why Global Warming Would be Good for You”, Moore argues that” 6,000 years ago the earth experienced much hotter temperatures? The desert was full of plants? There was plenty of water for humans and animals.”

NASA says the rise in temperature is related to so-called greenhouse gasses such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. But Moore claims this is wrong.“Some scientists believe that ‘polluting’ gasses cause temperatures to rise.In the past, temperatures rose before levels of gasses, not after gasses rose.”

The professor concludes that sea levels will rise by no more than 30 centimetres and this will not be noticed by most people around the world.

(1)

The story is mainly written to ________

[ ]

A.

explain the different causes of global warming

B.

analyze how people will be affected by global warming

C.

show scientists hold different opinions about global warming

D.

remind people to do more to protect the environment

(2)

Which of the following below shows the right order, according to James Hansen?

a.polluting gases

b.rising sea level

c.human activity

d.global warming

[ ]

A.

abcd

B.

acdb

C.

cadb

D.

cabd

(3)

According to Thomas Gale Moore, we know that ________

[ ]

A.

there is no need to worry about temperature increases

B.

deserts form because of rising temperatures

C.

the rise in temperature is related to some gasses

D.

the sharp rise in sea level will not do great harm

(4)

From the story, we can conclude that ________

[ ]

A.

global warming is completely the result of human activities

B.

there will be more sea but less land on earth in the future

C.

a lot of research has been done to deal with global warming

D.

we still don’t know for sure how bad the effects of global warming will be

Directions:Read the following three passagesEach passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statementsFor each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and DChoose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.

The 2012 London Olympics had enough problems to worry about. But one more has just been added - a communications blackout caused by solar storms.

After a period of calm within the Sun, scientists have detected the signs of a flesh cycle of sunspots that could peak in 2012, just in time for the arrival of the Olympic torch in London.

Now scientists believe that this peak could result in vast solar explosions that could throw billions of tons of charged matter towards the Earth, causing strong solar storms that could jam the telecommunications satellites and interact links sending five Olympic broadcast from London.

"The Sun's activity has a strong influence on the Earth. The Olympics could be in the middle of the next solar maximum which could affect the functions of communications satellites," said Professor Richard Harrison, head of space physics at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire.

At the peak of the cycle, violent outbursts called coronal mass ejections(日冕物质抛射)occur in the Sun's atmosphere, throwing out great quantities of electrically-charged matter." A coronal mass ejection can carry a billion tons of solar material into space at over a million kilometres per hour.Such events can expose astronauts to a deadly amount, can disable satellites, cause power failures on Earth and disturb communications," Professor Harrison added. The risk is greatest during a solar maximum when there is the greatest number of sunspots.

Next week in America, NASA is scheduled to launch a satellite for monitoring solar activity called the Solar Dynamics Observatory(SDO), which will take images of the Sun that are 10 times clearer than the most advanced televisions available.

The Rutherford Appleton Laboratory helped to make the high-tech cameras that will capture images of the solar flares(太阳耀斑)and explosions as they occur.

Professor Richard Hold away, the lab's director, said that the SDO should be able to provide early warning of a solar flare or explosion big enough to affect satellite communications on Earth "If we have advance warning, we'll be able to reduce the damage. What you don't want is things switching off for a week with no idea of what's caused the problem," he said.

(1)

The phrase "communications blackout" in paragraph 1 most probably refers to ________ during the 2012 Olympics.

[ ]

A.

the extinguishing of the Olympic torch

B.

the collapse of broadcasting systems

C.

the transportation breakdown in London

D.

the destruction of weather satellites

(2)

What can be inferred about the solar activity described in the passage?

[ ]

A.

The most fatal matter from the corona falls onto Earth.

B.

The solar storm peak occurs in the middle of each cycle.

C.

It takes several seconds for the charged matter to reach Earth.

D.

The number of sunspots declines after coronal mass ejections.

(3)

According to the passage, NASA will launch a satellite to ________.

[ ]

A.

take images of the solar system

B.

provide early warning of thunderstorms

C.

keep track of solar activities

D.

improve the communications on Earth

(4)

Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?

[ ]

A.

Solar Storms:An Invisible Killer

B.

Solar Storms:Earth Environment in Danger

C.

Solar Storms:Threatening the Human Race

D.

Solar Storms:Human Activities to Be Troubled

The plan: turn Mars into a blue world with streams and green fields, and then fill it with creatures (生物) from the earth. This idea may sound like something from a science fiction (科幻小说), but it is actually being taken seriously by many researchers.

This suggested future for the “red planet” will be the main topic for discussion at an international conference hosted by NASA (美国宇航局) this week. Leading researchers as well as science fiction writers will attend the event. It comes as NASA is preparing a multi?billion?dollar Mars research programme. “Turning Mars into a little earth has long been a topic in science fiction,”said Dr Michael Meyer, NASA’s senior scientist for astrobiology (太空生物学). “Now, with scientists exploring the reality, we can ask what are the real possibilities of changing Mars.”

Most scientists agree that Mars could be turned into a little earth, although much time and money would be needed to achieve this goal.

But many experts are shocked by the idea. “We are destroying our own world at an unbelievable speed and now we are talking about ruining another planet,” said Paul Murdin, of the Institute of Astronomy, Cambridge, UK. Over the past months, scientists have become increasingly confident they will find Martian life forms. Europe and America’s robot explorers have found proof that water, mixed with soil, exists in large amounts on the planet.

In addition, two different groups of scientists announced on March 28 that they had found signs of methane (甲烷) in the Martian atmosphere (大气). The gas is a waste product of living creatures and could be produced by microbes (微生物) living in the red planet’s soil.

But scientists such as Dr Lisa Pratt, a biologist at Indiana University, say that these microbes will be put in danger by the little earth project. “Before we have even discovered if there is life on Mars, we are talking about carrying out projects that would destroy all these native lifeforms, all the strange microbes that we hope to find buried in the soil,” said Dr Pratt. This view is shared by Monica Grady, a planetary scientist at the Natural History Museum, London. “We cannot risk starting a global experiment that would wipe out the precious information we are looking for.” she said, “This is just wrong.”

5. The passage is about________.

A. a plan turning Mars into a little earth

B. the necessity of changing Mars

C. Mars supporting life

D. finding water in the Mars

6. Which of the following is NOT the reason why some scientists are against the plan?

A. The project would wipe out all the native lifeforms on the Mars.

B. The project will cost too much money and work.

C. We would ruin Mars.

D. We are destroying our own world at an unbelievable speed.

7. We can infer from the passage that________.

A. water is a crucial factor for life

B. the project will have little effect on the native lifeforms supposed to live on the Mars

C. Monica Grady is in favour of carrying out the little earth project

D. the idea turning Mars into a little earth is nothing but a science fiction

8. Which of the following supports the conclusion of microbes living in the Mars’s soil?

A. Scientists found liquid water in the Mars.

B. Scientists found signs of methane in the Martian atmosphere.

C. Scientists found a lot of good soil on the Mars.

D. Scientists found some creatures living on the Mars.

The world is not coming to an end on December 21, 2012, the US space agency insisted on Monday in a rare campaign to dispel widespread rumors fueled by the Internet and a new Hollywood movie.

The latest big screen offering from Sony Picture, 2012, arrives in theaters on Friday, with a 200-million-dollar production about the end of the world supposedly based on myths (虚构的故事) backed by the Mayan calendar. It is claimed that the end of time will come as a Planet X—or Nibiru—heads toward or collides with the Earth.

Some websites accuse NASA of hiding the truth on the planet’ s existence, but the US space agency denounced such stories as an “Internet hoax(恶作剧) ”. “There is no factual basis for these claims,” NASA said in a question-and-answer posting on its website. “If such a collision were real, astronomers would have been tracking it for at least the past decade, and it would be visible by now to the naked eye. Obviously, it does not exist. Credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012,” it insisted. “After all, our planet has been getting along just well for more than four billion years.” added NASA.

There is another planet, Eris, floating in space. But the small planet similar to Pluto will remain safely fixed in the outer solar system and it can come no closer than four billion miles to the Earth, according to NASA.

Initial theories set the disaster for May 2003, but when nothing happened the date was moved forward to the winter in 2012 to coincide with the end of a cycle of the ancient Mayan calendar.

NASA insisted the Mayan calendar in fact does not end on December 21, 2012, as another period begins immediately afterward. And even if the planets were to line up as some have forecast, the effect on our planet would be “negligible”, NASA said.

“And while comets and asteroids (小行星) have always hit the Earth, big hits are very rare, ” NASA noted. The last major impact was believed to be 65 million years ago, resulting in the end of dinosaurs.

“We have already determined that there are no threatening asteroids as large as the one that killed the dinosaurs,” the space agency said.

61._______ played a key role in the spread of the rumors.

A. A new book B. The Internet and a new Hollywood movie

C. NASA D. An Indian calendar

62.The film 2012 is _______.

A. about the end of the world B. based on the scientific prediction

C. well accepted in the science field D. about a romantic love story

63.We can infer that _______.

A. people didn’t take the rumors seriously

B. Planet X—or Nibiru does exist

C. astronomers have been tracking Planet X for over ten years

D. the rumors caused a panic among some people

64.NASA thinks that Eris _______.

A. might pose a threat to the Earth B. doesn’t pose any threat to the Earth

C. is too far away to be visible D. is similar to our planet, where life might exist

65. Which of the following is the best title?

A. New Hollywood movie 2012 B. December 21, 2012, NOT the end of the world

C. End of the ancient Mayan calendar D. How rumors came into being
