    　　NASA is moving ahead with plans to put a long-armed Lander on Mars' icy north pole to search for clues for water and possible signs of life．

    　　The 386 million Phoenix Mars is planned to touch down in the Martian arctic in 2008．The stationary probe(探测器)will use its robotic arm to dig into the icy land and pick up soil samples to analyze．In 2002, the Mars Odyssey orbiter spotted evidence of ice-rich soil near the arctic surface．

    　　Scientists hope the Phoenix mission will find clues to the geologic history of water on the Red Planet and determine whether microbes(微生物)existed in the ice．

    　　Phoenix will be the first mission of the Mars Scout program, a renewed, low-cost effort to study the Red Planet．“The Phoenix mission explores new territory in the northern plains of Mars similar to the permafrost(永冻土)regions on Earth,”Peter Smith said．

    　　True to its name, Phoenix rose from the ashes of previous missions．The Lander for Phoenix was built to fly as part of the 2001 Mars Surveyor program．But the program broke down after the well-known disappearance of the Mars Polar Lander in 1999．The Polar Lander lost contact during a landing attempt near the planet's south pole after its rocket engine shut off too early, causing the spacecraft to fall about 130 feet to almost certain destruction．

    　　The Phoenix probe had been in storage at a Lockheed Martin clean room in Denver before it was reused for its present mission．It will carry science instruments that were designed for the Mars Surveyor program including an improved panoramic(全景的)camera and a digging robotic arm．Phoenix will lift off from the Kennedy Space Center in August 2007 and land on the planet nine months later．

    　　What would happen if the sea level rose 25 metres? What kind of planet would we live on if global temperatures went up two or three degrees Celsius?

    　　A recent report by the United States’ National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA) makes depressing reading．It says the earth would be a totally different place if temperatures went up．

    　　James Hansen who led the study explains that, “If warming is kept less than one degree Celsius, the effects of global warming may be relatively manageable．” But he said, “If it rose 2 to 3 degrees the sea level would be about 25 meters higher than today．”

    　　What effects would a 25-metre increase in sea level have? Well, it would leave Shanghai’s under 23 metres of water．Its 17 million residents would have to leave, or be washed away．Around the world billions of people would have to give up their homes and jobs to escape floods．

    　　Humans would not be the only ones affected．If global warming continues, animals and humans will be forced to share a much smaller amount of land．Moreover, along with the rise in world population, can you guess the result of more people living on less land? It will mean greater competition for resources like food and clean water．Competition could easily become conflict．

    　　But Professor Thomas Gale Moore of Stanford University, California, US, disagrees．In an article titled “Why Global Warming Would be Good for You”, Moore argues that” 6,000 years ago the earth experienced much hotter temperatures? The desert was full of plants? There was plenty of water for humans and animals．”

    　　NASA says the rise in temperature is related to so-called greenhouse gasses such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide．But Moore claims this is wrong．“Some scientists believe that ‘polluting’ gasses cause temperatures to rise．In the past, temperatures rose before levels of gasses, not after gasses rose．”

    　　The professor concludes that sea levels will rise by no more than 30 centimetres and this will not be noticed by most people around the world．

    　　Next week in America, NASA is scheduled to launch a satellite for monitoring solar activity called the Solar Dynamics Observatory(SDO), which will take images of the Sun that are 10 times clearer than the most advanced televisions available．

    　　The Rutherford Appleton Laboratory helped to make the high-tech cameras that will capture images of the solar flares(太阳耀斑)and explosions as they occur．

    　　Professor Richard Hold away, the lab's director, said that the SDO should be able to provide early warning of a solar flare or explosion big enough to affect satellite communications on Earth "If we have advance warning, we'll be able to reduce the damage．What you don't want is things switching off for a week with no idea of what's caused the problem," he said．

    　　The plan: turn Mars into a blue world with streams and green fields, and then fill it with creatures (生物) from the earth. This idea may sound like something from a science fiction (科幻小说), but it is actually being taken seriously by many researchers.

    　　This suggested future for the “red planet” will be the main topic for discussion at an international conference hosted by NASA (美国宇航局) this week. Leading researchers as well as science fiction writers will attend the event.     The world is not coming to an end on December 21, 2012, the US space agency insisted on Monday in a rare campaign to dispel widespread rumors fueled by the Internet and a new Hollywood movie.

    The latest big screen offering from Sony Picture, 2012, arrives in theaters on Friday, with a 200-million-dollar production about the end of the world supposedly based on myths (虚构的故事) backed by the Mayan calendar. It is claimed that the end of time will come as a Planet X—or Nibiru—heads toward or collides with the Earth.

    Some websites accuse NASA of hiding the truth on the planet’ s existence, but the US space agency denounced such stories as an “Internet hoax(恶作剧) ”. “There is no factual basis for these claims,” NASA said in a question-and-answer posting on its website. “If such a collision were real, astronomers would have been tracking it for at least the past decade, and it would be visible by now to the naked eye. Obviously, it does not exist. Credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012,” it insisted. “After all, our planet has been getting along just well for more than four billion years.” added NASA.

    There is another planet, Eris, floating in space. But the small planet similar to Pluto will remain safely fixed in the outer solar system and it can come no closer than four billion miles to the Earth, according to NASA.

    Initial theories set the disaster for May 2003, but when nothing happened the date was moved forward to the winter in 2012 to coincide with the end of a cycle of the ancient Mayan calendar.

    NASA insisted the Mayan calendar in fact does not end on December 21, 2012, as another period begins immediately afterward. And even if the planets were to line up as some have forecast, the effect on our planet would be “negligible”, NASA said.

    “And while comets and asteroids (小行星) have always hit the Earth, big hits are very rare, ” NASA noted. The last major impact was believed to be 65 million years ago, resulting in the end of dinosaurs.

    “We have already determined that there are no threatening asteroids as large as the one that killed the dinosaurs,” the space agency said.
