Letter to the Editor

A heated debate is currently going on in our town. Should we allow the cinema to be constructed in the Havenswood Shopping Center? There is just one large area left to build on, and the theater would use up all of that space. Some people are excited at the idea of finally having our own movie theater. Others would rather travel ten miles to the nearest theater to keep our quiet town the way it is. They say it is enough to have Marvin’s Movie Video Rentals. After all, Marvin’s store keeps thousands of the latest videos.

There are certainly benefits to renting videos. For one thing, you can plan your own schedule when it is convenient for you. You can relax on your sofa, and take a break whenever you need one. You can also talk to others without bothering any strangers seated nearby. In addition, it is a less expensive way to view a movie, especially if more than one person is watching the video.

On the other hand, seeing a movie in a theater is an experience all its own. First, you can see the movie on a wide screen as the filmmaker intended. To be viewed on a television screen, a film must be changed in some way to make it smaller. One is the “pan-and-scan method, which involves removing some of the details in the picture. The other way, called “letterboxing, keeps the image the way it is on the big screen, with one annoying exception; because the big-screen style is wide, the same picture on a television screen must be long and narrow.

Another problem is sound. The sound from a television cannot compare with the sound system in a theater. Your experience of a movie improves when you can clearly hear all of the sounds. Furthermore, at home, viewing companions often talk during a movie, which makes you miss out on what’s happening in the film.

Besides, having a movie theater will not mean that you can’t still go to Marvin’s! You will just have a choice that you didn’t have before. Isn’t it time for Havenswood residents like me to enjoy a little progress?

1.Who is the author probably?

A. An editor of a newspaper.

B. The manager of the nearest theatre.

C. The owner of Marvin’s Movie Video Rentals.

D. A concerned citizen in Havenswood.

2.What is the advantage of renting videos?

A. It won’t take up the large area in the town.

B. People can enjoy better sound system.

C. There’s no strict limit to the viewing time.

D. People can fully concentrate on their movies.

3.In the author’s opinion, the construction of a theatre will _________.

A. save movie-goers’ money and time

B. offer people another experience

C. reduce the profit of the Movie Video Rentals

D. disturb the peace in the town

4.Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?

(①-⑤stand for the paragraphs in the article)

I could still remember that hot afternoon when my mother ordered me to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. In this way, she hoped to defeat my strange problem — inability to read.

In the library, I found my way into the “Children's Room.” I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of a beagle. I had recently had a beagle, the first and only animal friend I ever had as a child. He was my secret sharer, but one morning, he was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him. I never forgot my beagle.

There on the book's cover was a beagle which looked similar to my dog. I ran my fingers over the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the title, Amos, the Beagle with a Plan. Unknowingly, I had read the title. Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library for the summer.

Under the shade of a bush, I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with difficulty. Though pages were turned slowly, I got the main idea of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. That dog was my dog, and I was the little boy in the book. At the end of the story, my mind continued the final scene of reunion, on and on, until my own lost dog and I were, in my mind, running together.

My mother's call returned me to the real world. I suddenly realized something: I had read a book, and I had loved reading that book. Everyone knew I could not read. But I had read it. Books could be so wonderful. I was going to read them.

I never told my mother about my wonderful experience that summer, but she saw a slow but remarkable improvement in my classroom performance during the next year. And years later, she was proud that her son had read thousands of books, was awarded a PhD in the literature, and published his own books, articles, poetry and fiction. The power of the words has held.

1.The author's mother told him to borrow a book in order to ___________.

A. help cure him of his reading problem

B. encourage him to do more walking

C. let him spend a meaningful summer

D. make him learn more about animals

2.The author managed to read the book through because .

A. he was forced by his mother to read it

B. the book told the story of his pet dog

C. the book reminded him of his own story with his dog

D. the happy ending of the story attracted him

3.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A. The author's mother read the same book.

B. The author has become a successful writer.

C. The author has had happy summers ever since.

D. The author's mother rewarded him with books.

4.Which one can be the best title of the passage?

A. The Charm of a Book B. Mum's Strict Order

C. Reunion with My Beagle D. My Passion for Reading

An increase in students applying to study economics at university is being attributed to (归因于)the global economic crisis (危机) awakening a public thirst for knowledge about how the financial system works.

Applications for degree courses beginning this autumn were up by 15% this January, according to UCAS, the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service. A spokesman for the Royal Economic Society said applications to do economics at A-level were also up.

Professor John Beath, the president of the society and a leading lecturer at St Andrews University, said his first-year lectures-which are open to students from all departments-were drawing crowds of 400, rather than the usual 250.

“There are a large number of students who are not economics majors, who would like to learn something about it. One of the things I have done this year is to relate my teaching to contemporary events in a way that one hasn’t traditionally done.” He said.

University applications rose 7% last year, but there were rises above average in several subjects. Nursing saw a 15% jump, with people’s renewed interest in careers in the public sector(部门), which are seen as more secure in economic crisis.

A recent study showed almost two thirds of parents believed schools should do more to teach pupils about financial matters, and almost half said their children had asked them what was going on, although a minority of parents felt they did not understand it themselves well enough to explain.

Zack Hocking, the head of Child Trust Funds, said: “It’s possible that one good thing to arise from the downturn will be a generation that’s financially wiser and better equipped to manage their money through times of economic uncertainty.”

1. Professor John Beath’s lectures are_______ .

A. given in a traditional way

B. connected with the present situation

C. open to both students and their parents

D. warmly received by economics

2.Careers in the public sector are more attractive because of their_________ .

A. greater stability B. higher pay

C. fewer applications D. better reputation

3.In the opinion of most parents, __________ .

A. economics should be the focus of school teaching

B. more students should be admitted to universities

C. the teaching of financial matters should be strengthened.

D. children should solve financial problems themselves

4. According to Hocking, the global economic crisis might make the youngsters _______ .

A. wiser in money management

B. have access to better equipment

C. confident about their future careers

D. get jobs in Child Trust Funds

5.What’s the main idea of the text?

C. College students benefit a lot from economic uncertainty

D. Parents are concerned with children’s subject selection.
