【题目】At 23, I was fresh out of graduate school and working in a nursing home, trying to decide my next path in life. My job involved wheeling residents (居民) to the community hall for activities. Elizabeth would wave from her darkened room but refuse to join the gatherings. Nearly blind, and requiring oxygen, she never left her bedside. I soon learned, though, that she loved books, and every day after work I would read to her.

In dim (微暗的) light we made our way through "King Lear," "Henry IV, .... Jane Eyre," the poems of Rupert Brooke.

Two golden hours might pass before I’ d pack up to return to my apartment. Before I could leave she’ d press my hand, saying, "Child -- my literary child. You bring me such joy." Elizabeth’ s husband had died a decade earlier, and their only child, a daughter, was estranged (疏远的) for what heartbreaking reason I never knew.

One day an old friend of hers visited and brought her some soup. Smiling broadly, Elizabeth squeezed my arm. "Tomorrow, child,we shall feast."

The next evening I found Elizabeth’ s bed empty. "I’ m sorry," the nurse whispered. She handed me a box and nodded. "She left everything to you." At home I unpacked it, finding two white sweaters, the dozen leather-bound books and, at the bottom, the can of soup.

That summer I decided my path. I returned to school to study literature.

And for 26 years the soup has stayed in my kitchen. It’s remained unopened and now is rusted (生锈的). But the memories are preserved.

1Why did Elizabeth refuse to join the gatherings? -

A. She had many books to read.

B. She was not a very social person.

2What do we know about Elizabeth?

A. She loved writing poems.

B. She often visited her friends.

C. She got divorced ten years ago.

D. She had little contact with her daughter.

3What can we know about the author?

A. She used to be a doctor.

B. She was inspired by Elizabeth.

C. She taught literature for 26 years.

D. She didn’t like the taste of the soup.

4What would be the best title for the text?

Elizabeth would wave from her darkened room but refuse to join the gatherings. Nearly blind, and requiring oxygen, she never left her bedside可知Elizabeth的眼睛几乎全瞎了,并且她需要氧气,所以她几乎从未离开过自己的床边。结合选项可知,她拒绝参加聚会的原因是行动受到限制。C选项正确。

2推理判断题。由第三段中的their only child, a daughter, was estranged (疏远的) for what heartbreaking reason I never knew可知Elizabeth的女儿由于某种原因和Elizabeth非常的疏远,由此可以推知,Elizabeth和她的女儿没什么联系,故D选项正确。

To understand your child’s learning style, observe him as he plays. 【1】 Chances are, you’ll notice that his favorites have something in common. Perhaps they all have bright colors and different patterns or interesting shapes, or make sounds. Then look at how he plays: Does he tend to look at objects carefully or to hold and feel them in his hands? Perhaps he is less interested in toys than in rolling and moving around. 2

Most children have a number of different intelligences and learning styles and can be engaged in a variety of ways. If you don’t see a strong preference for particular toys or games, it means that your child has more than one primary intelligence or that he isn’t old enough to have developed a strong preference. 3 By then your child will most likely respond best to specific activities and types of experiences.

4 This doesn’t mean that you have no way to help him master certain skills—almost anything can be taught in a way that works well for a specific intelligence. When you identify and respond to your child’s intelligence and learning style, you help him approach the world on his terms. 5

A. Respecting individual intelligences and learning styles means offering your child a variety of ways to learn.

B. Which toys does he tend to choose?

C. You should not force your child to do what he doesn’t like.

D. As you play with your child, pay attention to what he is most interested in.

E. In most cases, you can begin to see a preference for particular styles at around age two.

F. Following his strengths can make mastering new skills less frustrating and can help him develop a lifelong love of learning.

G. Telling your child his learning styles is a good way to improve his studies.

【题目】I was desperately nervous about becoming car-free. But eight months ago our car was hit by a passing vehicle and it was destroyed. No problem, I thought: we’ll buy another. But the insurance payout didn’t even begin to cover the costs of buying a new car—I worked out that, with the loan (贷款) we’d need plus petrol, insurance, parking permits and tax, we would make a payment as much as 600 a month.

And that’s when I had my fancy idea. Why not just give up having a car at all? I live in London. We have a railway station behind our house, a tube station 10 minutes’ walk away, and a bus stop at the end of the street. A new car club had just opened in our area, and one of its shiny little red Peugeots was parked nearby. If any family in Britain could live without a car, I reasoned, then surely we were that family.

But my new car-free idea, sadly, wasn’t shared by my family. My teenage daughters were horrified. What would their friends think about our family being “too poor to afford a car”? (I wasn’t that bothered what they thought, and I suggested the girls should take the same approach.)

My friends, too, were astonished at our plan. What would happen if someone got seriously ill overnight and needed to go to hospital? (an ambulance) How would the children get to and from their many events? (buses and trains) People smiled as though this was another of my mad ideas, before saying they were sure I’d soon realize that a car was a necessity.

Eight months on, I wonder whether we’ll ever own a car again. The idea that you “have to” own a car, especially if you live in a city, is all in the mind. I live—and many other citizens do too—in a place that has never been better served by public transport, and yet car ownership has never been higher. We worry about rising car costs, but we’d be better off asking something much more basic: do I really need a car? Certainly the answer is no, and I’m a lot richer because I dared to ask the question.

【1】The author decided to live a car-free life partly because ______.

A. he was hurt in a terrible car accident

B. most families chose to go car-free

C. the traffic jam was unbearable for him

D. the cost of a new car was too much

【2】What is the attitude of the author’s family toward his plan?

A. Disapproving.B. Supportive.

C. Unconcerned.D. Optimistic.

【3】What did the author suggest his daughters do about their friends’ opinion?

A. Take their advice.B. Argue against it.

C. Leave it alone.D. Think it over.

【4】What conclusion did the author draw after the eight-month car-free life?

A. Life without a car is a little bit hard.

B. Life cannot go without a car.

C. A car-free life does not suit everyone.

D. His life gets improved without a car.
