Going on a date can be a nightmare for the best of us. But now a pair of 'social X-Ray' glasses
promises to tell you exactly what the other person is thinking-and when you should stop talking.
The glasses have a built-in camera which monitors the other person's facial expressions and matches
them up with 24 known features which convey emotions. It will then tell the individual via an earpiece and
lights on the glasses what their date is thinking. In a traffic light-style system, a red light means negative,
yellow means they are a bit interested and green means your date is happy. The glasses are under
development at present by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Media Lab.
They say that wearing them during a conversation with another person is like having an 'extra sense'
that they are bored or losing interest.
The eyewear was developed for people suffering from autism (孤独症) who have much difficulty
interacting with others, but now the team behind it has seen wider applications. It works thanks to a
camera the size of a grain of rice which is put into the glasses frame and connected via a wire to a small
computer which can be attached to the user's body. The camera monitors how long and how often 24
'feature points' appear on the subject's faces which are then analyzed by software developed by the MIT
team.
This data is then compared with a bank of expressions and the computer tells the wearer what is
going on via the earpiece and the traffic light system.
So far the glasses are still a job in progress and have been accurate just 64 per cent of the time, a
figure which is expected to improve with further tests.

Maybe ten-year-old Elizabeth put it best when she said to her father, "But, Dad, you can't be healthy if
you're dead."
Dad, in a hurry to get home before dark so he could go for a run, had forgotten to wear his safety belt-a
mistake 75% of US population make every day. The big question is why.
There have been many myths (误区) about safety belt ever since their first appearance in cars some forty
years ago. The following are three of the most common.
Myth Number One: It's best to be "thrown clear" of a serious accident.
Truth: Sorry, but any accident serious enough to "throw you clear" is able going to be serious enough to
give you a very bad landing. And chances are you'll have traveled through a windshield (挡风玻璃) or door
to do it. Studies show that chances of dying after a car accident are twenty-five times in cases where people
are "thrown clear".
Myth Number Two: Safety-belts "trap" people in cars that are burning or sinking in water.
Truth: Sorry again, but studies show that people knocked unconscious (昏迷) due to not wearing safety
belts have a greater chance of dying in these accidents. People wearing safety belts are usually protected to
the point of having in these accidents. People wearing safety belts are usually protected to the point of having
a clear head to free themselves from such dangerous situation, not to be trapped in them.
Myth Number Three: Safety belts aren't needed at speeds of less than 30 miles per hour (mph).
Truth: When two cars traveling at 30 mph hit each other, an unbelted driver would meet the windshield
with a force equal to diving headfirst into the ground from a height of 10 metres.

任务型阅读
     阅读下列材料,从所给的六个选项(A、B、C、D、E和F)中选出符合各小题要求的最佳选项,选项中有一项为多余选项。

Directions:  Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each
paragraph.  There is one extra heading which you do not need.
1._____
The colored part of the eye is called the iris. There are three basic eye colours ─ brown, blue and
green. A few albino people have red or pink eyes, but these are very rare. Many people believe that
blue eyes are more delicate than brown eyes. In fact they are just as tough as brown eyes, although they
are more sensitive to light.
2.______
We only see part of the eyeball, although the whole eye is as big as a table tennis ball. Light enters the eye
through the pupil and passes through the lens. The lens focuses the light onto the retina at the back of the
eye. The retina sends the signal to the brain along the optic nerve. The image on the retina is actually
upside-down, but the brain corrects it. As we get older our eyesight becomes worse. This happens
because the lens isn't as flexible as when we are young and the eye muscles are weaker.
3._____
Our eyes are the most important of our five senses. We receive 80% of our information about the
world through our eyes. We also send signals to other people with our eyes. Some eye signals are
unconscious. When we look at something nice, our pupils get bigger. But when we don't like something,
they become smaller. We cry when we are unhappy and sometimes when we are very happy. But we
can also control some eye signals. For example, we can wink at someone or raise an eyebrow.
Sunglasses make someone appear mysterious or dangerous, because they hide that eyes and so we can't
see the signals.
4._____
We find large eyes more attractive. Children have large eyes in proportion to their heads. Cartoon
characters always have large eyes, too. We can't actually change our eyes, but we can make them look
bigger with make-up. Eye make-up isn't new. Pictures in the Pyramids show that the ancient Egyptians
both men and women-used it. False eyelashes can make eyelashes longer. Eye shadow on the eyelids
can make the eyes look bigger and more dramatic.Glasses can also make eyes look bigger.
5. _______
We do not normally look into someone's eyes for long, especially when they are very close. Eye
contact can be very threatening, so people only do it when they want to threaten someone. It is also
very intimate. This is why lovers gaze into each other's eyes. It's also why people don't look at each
other in lifts.

A. Ways to beautify eyes
B. Proper use of eye contact
C. Techniques of sending eye signals
D. Colours of people's eyes
E. Functions of different parts of the eye
F. Variety of messages conveyed through

Green is an important color in nature. It is the color of grass and the leaves on trees. It is also the color of most growing plants.
Sometimes, the word green means young, fresh and growing. Sometimes, it describes something that
is not yet ripe or finished. For example, a greenhorn is someone who has no experience, who is new to
a situation. In the fifteenth century, a greenhorn referred to a young cow or ox whose horns (角) had not yet developed. A century or so later, a greenhorn was for a soldier who had not yet had any experience
in battle. By the eighteenth century, a greenhorn had the meaning it has today - a person who is new in a
job.
Someone who has the ability to grow plants well is said to have a green thumb. The expression
comes from the early nineteen hundreds. A person with a green thumb seems to have a magic touch that makes plants grow quickly and well. You might say that the woman next door has a green thumb if her
garden continues to grow long after your plants have died.
The Green Revolution is the name given some years ago to the development of new kinds of rice
and other grains. The new plants produced much larger crops. The Green Revolution was the result of
hard work by agricultural scientists who had green thumbs.
Green is also the color used to describe the powerful feeling - jealousy (嫉妒). The green-eyed monster (怪物) is not a frightening creature from outer space. It is an expression used about four hundred years ago by British writer William Shakespeare in his play “Othello”. It describes the unpleasant feeling a person has when someone has something that he wants to get. A young man may suffer from the green-eyed
monster
if his girlfriend begins going out with someone else. Or, that green-eyed monster may affect your friend if you get a pay rise and he does not.
1.  Greenhorn now refers to _______.
A. a new solider
B. a person with little experience
C. a young horse
D. a fruit that is not yet ripe
2. A person who has a green thumb is a person _______.
A. who is good at growing plants
B. whose thumbs are in green color
C. whose garden is greener than others’
D. who is younger than his neighbors
3. The author is actually talking about _______.
A. colours
B. language
C. culture
D. agriculture
4. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
A. In about the 16th century, a greenhorn meant an experienced soldier.
B. The Green Revolution has connection with agricultural science.
C. We will call a person who is good at gardening a green thumb.
D. People use “a green-eyed monster” to describe a jealous person.

For many parents, raising a teenager is like fighting a long war, but years go by without any clear
winner. Like a border conflict between neighboring countries, the parent-teen war is about boundaries:
Where is the line between what I control and what you do?
Both sides want peace,  but neither feels it has any power to stop the conflict. In part, this is because
neither is willing to admit any responsibility for starting it .From the parents' point of view, the only cause
of their fight is their adolescents' complete unreasonableness. And of course, the teens see it in exactly
the same way, except oppositely.
Both feel trapped.
In this article, I'll describe three no-win situations that commonly arise between teens and parents
and then suggest some ways out of the trap. The first no-win situation is quarrels over unimportant things.
Examples include the color of the teen's hair, the cleanliness of the bedroom, the preferred style of
clothing ,the child's failure to eat a good breakfast before school, or his tendency to sleep until noon on
the weekends. Second, blaming. The goal of a blaming battle is to make the other admit that his bad
attitude is the reason why everything goes wrong. Third, needing to be right. It doesn' t matter whether
the topic is politics, the laws of physics, or the proper way to break an egg ;the point of these arguments
is to prove that you are right and the other person is wrong for both wish to be considered an
authority-someone who actually knows something-and therefore to command respect. Unfortunately, as
long as parents and teens continue to assume that they know more than the other, they'll continue to fight
these battles forever and never make any real progress.
1.Why does the author compare the parent-teen war to a border conflict?
A. Both can continue for generations.
B. Both are about where to draw the line.
C. Neither has any clear winner.
D. Neither can be put to an end.
2. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. The teens blame their parents for starting the conflict.
B. The teens agree with their parents on the cause of the conflict.
C. The teens cause their parents of misleading them.
D. The teens tend to have a full understanding of their parents.
3. Parents and teens want to be right because they want to_________.
A. give orders to the other
B. know more than the other
C. gain respect from the other
D. get the other to behave properly
4. what will the author most probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?
A. Causes for the parent-teen conflicts.
B. Examples of the parent-teen war
C. Solutions for the parent-teen problems.
D. Future of the parent-teen relationship.

In order to know a foreign language thoroughly(完全地), four things are necessary. First, we must
understand the language when we hear it spoken. Secondly, we must be able to speak it ourselves,
correctly with confidence(自信) and without hesitation(犹豫). Thirdly, we must be able to write it. We
must be able to make sentences that are correct in grammar.
There is no short way to succeed in language learning. A good memory(记忆) is a great help, but it is
not enough only to memorize the rules from a grammar book. It is no much use learning by heart long lists(一览表) of words and their meanings, studying the dictionary and so on. We must learn by using the
language. If we are pleased with a few rules we have memorized, we are not really learning the language. We must "Learn through use". Practice is important. We must practise speaking and writing the language
whenever(无论何时) we can.

Frankly, I appreciate myself very much.Yes, I admit I'm in many aspects not as good as other people, but I don't think I'm always not good. When I find what I've done or written is okay, I'll remain pleased
with myself for quite a few days, and if I receive praise for it, I'll even become so excited as to add a few words to reward myself.
True, I'm not modest at all.People may call me conceited (自负的). But I think otherwise.
I appreciate other people.I appreciate anything good.Isn't it unfair to forget appreciating myself while
appreciating others?
We Chinese generally tend to be modest, and we take pride in being so.For example, a Chinese man
will call his own wife zhuojing, meaning"my humble wife", and his own writings zhuozuo, meaning"my poor writings". But if you call his wife a "rustic (乡村的) woman" or his writings"trash", he would, I'm sure,
declare he would make a clean break with you angrily. As a matter of fact, there is probably no difference
at all between what is said by him and you.
I don't think it's wrong of you to freely praise yourself if you're really worthy of praise. As we know,
there is an old Chinese saying disparaging (蔑视) a melon seller, named Lao Wang, who keeps praising
his own goods.Well, why can't he praise his melons if they are really sweet and juicy?
Lao Wang sells melons for a living. How could he carry on business if he, by imitating the affectations (装模作样) of us intellectuals, were to show false modesty about his melons? He would sure enough die
of starvation.
Selfappreciation is therefore a key to professional dedication and enjoyment of work.Needless to say,
the same is true of those who make a living with their pen.One will lose confidence in writing when he
stops admiring his own essays.

1. We know from the first three paragraphs that the author________.

A. is modest in some way
B. is pleased to be a good writer
C. is too conceited
D. thinks it unfair to appreciate others

2. What do we know about the author's attitude towards Chinese modesty according to Paragraph 4?

A. Supportive.
B. Negative.
C. Neutral.
D. Careless.

3. The author mentions the example of Lao Wang to prove that______.

A. Lao Wang is very proud of himself
B. melon sellers should praise their goods
C. reasonable selfappreciation is good
D. writers should learn from Lao Wang

4. The purpose of the passage is to encourage readers to be________.

A. modest
B. considerate
C. respectful
D. confident

A quarrel at home may result in you falling ill. Don't laugh, it's true. Family matters including living
habits and even the way we speak have a big effect on our health, doctors say.
Wang Xiaoyu, a Senior 2 girl from Xichang, Sichuan Province, fainted (晕倒) in class when she heard her classmates quarrel at the top of their voices. Quarrels between her parents also put the girl into a
coma. It is because she is suffering from depression (抑郁症), caused by bad relations at home, doctors
explained.
"We don't get sick or stay well by ourselves," says Dr Robert Ferrer from the US. Ferrer shows that
family forces may explain up to a quarter of health problems, in his recent research. The genes you get
from your family may cause illness. If one of your parents has a heart attack, your risk of being affected
may double. But effects on health are not only written in our DNA.
Unrelated people who live under the same roof also get similar problems. Diet, lifestyle and
environment affect our health, too. Ferrer's research also found that if teenagers feel they are ignored or
unimportant at home they are more likely to get sick.
We may never fully understand all the effects that families have on our health. But just as individual
(个别的) problems can have effects on others, a small improvement can have big benefits, Ferrer said.
1. Which of the following can best explain why Wang Xiaoyu fainted in class?
A. Because her classmates often quarreled in class.
B. Because her parents used to quarrel.
C. Because of her depression caused by bad family relations.
D. Because her classmates shouted loudly at her.
2. According to Dr Ferrer, which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. We get sick or stay well by ourselves.
B. Only the genes we get from our family have a big effect on our health.
C. Our health has nothing to do with diet, lifestyle and environment.
D. Teenagers who are ignored at home get sick more easily than those who are not.
3. The underlined word "coma" in Paragraph2 probably means ________.
A. surprise
B. faint
C. tiredness
D. sadness
4. The best title for this passage is ________.
A. Family relations.
B. The reasons why we get sick.
