Chemical Change and Physical Change

There are two kinds of changes-chemical change and physical change.

In a chemical change, there is always a new substance formed.Breaking up water into hydrogen and oxygen is a chemical change. In each of the chemical change at least one new substance is formed.A change is not a chemical change if it doesn’t form a new substance.

Physical changes are very common, too. There are many examples. You can make a physical change by tearing a piece of paper into two, or by cutting a piece of iron with lathe. Here paper is still paper, and the iron is still iron.

Another way of making physical change is dissolving something in water. When you dissolve salt in water, the salt disappears. You may think that a new substance has been formed. But really there is no new substance. The salt is still salt. You can still taste it.So the dissolving of anything is a physical change.

When water freezes, the change is also a physical one.The water changes from liquid to solid. But it is still the same substance. That is why the freezing of anything is a physical change.

From the coldest arctic ice to the hottest deserts you will find mammals living and thriving(兴旺).There seems to be no climate that they can't adapt to, however changeable it may be.Why can mammals adapt to so many different habitats? There is a good reason for this-mammals have the ability to keep their body at a constant temperature whatever the weather. They are “warm-blooded”.

Mammals achieve this by chemically “burning” their food as fuel inside their bodies. This is kept under tight control by a region of the brain that acts like a thermostat(恒温器), and this makes sure that the mammal's body temperature stays about the same.

A constant body temperature is a great advantage for mammals because all the chemical processes that go on inside a living body are likely to happen more slowly at low temperatures and faster at higher temperatures.Mammals can regulate their temperature at the best condition for all these processes, allowing them to be active at very cold or very hot periods and to keep up tiring activity for a long time.Animals such as lizards(蜥蜴)rely on moving in and out of the warm sunlight to regulate their body temperature. They slow down when they can't warm up and may die if they can't get away from heat. They also tend to overheat quickly when they are active as their muscles produce warmth.

Using food energy to keep body temperature constant is expensive, and since mammals need to be efficient at keeping the warmth they create inside themselves, they often have fur and a cover of fat under their skin to prevent heat from escaping. To help lose heat when they are too hot, they have sweat glands(汗腺)that take the heat away from the skin through evaporating(蒸发)water. This means, though, that they need to drink more than other animals.

(1)

Mammals can adapt to so many habitats because ________

[ ]

A.

the climate is unchangeable

B.

they can regulate their body temperature

C.

they are “warm-blooded”

D.

their muscles produce warmth

(2)

When mammals keep their body at a constant temperature, ________

[ ]

A.

the chemical processes happen more slowly in their bodies

B.

the chemical processes happen faster in their bodies

C.

they will use less fuel inside their bodies

D.

they can live an active life

(3)

We can infer from the last paragraph that mammals ________

[ ]

A.

need to drink more than other animals

B.

have different ways of keeping their body temperature

C.

often have fur and fat to prevent heat from escaping

D.

have sweat glands that take the heat away from the skin

(4)

[ ]

Ⅲ阅读(共两节,满分40分)

第一节 阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

    阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项,并在答

题卡上将该项涂黑。

The Diet Zone: A Dangerous Place

Diet Coke, diet Pepsi, diet pills, no-fat diet, vegetable diet... We are surroundedby the word "diet" everywhere we look and listen. We have so easily been attractedby the promise and potential of diet products that we have stopped thinking aboutwhat diet products are doing to us. We are paying for products that harm us

psychologically and physically.

Diet products significantly weakenus psychologically. On one level, we are not

allowing our brain to admit that our weight problems lie not in actually losing the

weight, but in controlling the consumption of fatty, high-calorie, unhealthy foods.

Diet products allow us to jump over the thinking stage and go straight for the scale

instead. All we have to do is to swallow or recognize the word "diet" in food labels.

On another level, diet products have greater psychological effects. Every time wehave a zero-calorie drink, we are telling ourselves without our awareness that wedon't have to work to get results. Diet products make people believe that gain comes without pain, and that life can be without resistance and struggle.

The danger of diet products lies not only in the psychological effects they have onus, but also in the physical harm that they cause. Diet foods can indirectly harm ourbodies because consuming them instead of healthy foods means we are preventing ourbodies from having basic nutrients (营养成分). Diet foods and diet pills contain zerocalorie only because the diet industry has created chemicals to produce these wonderproducts. Diet products, may not be nutritional, and the chemical that go into dietproducts are potentially dangerous.

Now that we are aware of the effects that diet products have on us, it is time toseriously think about buying them. Losing weight lies in the power of minds, not inthe power of chemicals. Once we realize this, we will be much better able to resist

diet products, and therefore prevent the psychological harm that comes from using

them.

41. From Paragraph 1, we learn that__________.

  A. diet products fail to bring out people's potential

  B. people have difficulty in choosing diet products

  C. diet products are misleading people

  D. people are fed up with diet products

42. One psychological effect of diet products is that people tend to__________.

  A. try out a variety of diet foods

  B. hesitate before they enjoy diet foods.

  C. pay attention to their own eating habits

  D. watch their weight rather than their diet

43. In Paragraph 3, "gain comes without pain" probably means________.

  A. losing weight is effortless

  B. it costs a lot to lose weight

  C. diet products bring no pain

  D. diet products are free from calories                        ,

44. Diet products indirectly harm people physically because such products_________.

  A. are over-consumed

  B. lack basic nutrients

  C. are short of chemicals

  D. provide too much energy
