Eye injuries from paintball games have increased among children, even as the protective equipment for the sport has improved, according to a study released yesterday in the journal pediatrics.
The Federal Consumer Product Safety Commission estimated the number of emergency room visits for eye injuries caused by paintballs at 545 in 2001 and more than 1,200 in 2003. More than 40 percent of those injuries were believed to involve children, the study said.
Paintballs are fired at a speed of up to 300 feet a second, the study said. Being so small, they can fit inside the bones meant to protect the eye. The study’s author, Dr. David A. Listman of St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, said paintball shopping centers had generally switched to full face masks(面罩),which have become more effective at protecting the eyes than earlier gear. But most injuries now occur in backyard play, which is more likely to involve teenagers or children.“The injuries being seen are mostly in people who did not wear the proper, or for that matter any, safety equipment,”Dr. Listman said.
Those injuries can involve permanent(永久性的)damage to sight, he said.
Dr. Listman said he believed that paintball guns should be restricted to regulated places. In the absence of such action, parents should limit children’s access to the guns and insist on proper protection. Paintball guns“should be treated with the same respect as any other firearm,”he said“These are the only guns that are made to shoot at your friends.”
56.Paintballs may cause injuries mainly because of .
A.their content and size B.their speed
C.their shape D.their content and shape
57.The word“gear”(in paragraph 3)means .
A.medicine B.material C.technique D.equipment
58.What do you learn form Dr. Listman?
A.Children should not play paintball guns everywhere.
B.Many more children were injured in 2003 than in 2001.
C.The improved equipment is still ineffective for children.
D.Every eye injury from paintballs will finally lead to blindness.
59.Which of the following might be the proper title for the passage?
A.Children: How You Should Play Properly
B.Parents: Keep Children Off Paintballs
C.Safety: When Paintball Meets Eyeball
D.Guns: Only Made to Shoot at Your Friends

On February 1, 1960, I met three of my friends at the North Carolina A & T College library in Greensboro, and together we walked the mile to Woolworth’s.
At that time in the South, African Americans weren’t allowed to eat with whites. Woolworth’s had a separate lunch counter in the basement for “Negroes”(黑人). My friends and I had agreed that we would sit down at the white lunch counter and ask to be served. And we did just that. Immediately, spoons stopped halfway to people’s mouths. Every eye was on us. Again, we asked the waitress for coffee and said it was a custom not to serve the black people. And I asked, “But you do agree that the custom is wrong, don’t you?”
We were very polite----our goal was to make sure that people did the right thing. So we sat there, waiting. An angry policeman came in, and stopped right behind me. I could feel his hot breath on my neck as he stood over me. I said to myself, “This is it.” But he just stood there for a minute, and then backed away and started pacing up and down. I came to realize: he didn’t know what to do.
A little old white lady sitting farther down the counter finished her sandwich and headed straight for us. I prepared myself for a blast(一阵) of abuse. Instead, she put her hands on our shoulders and said, “Boys, I am so proud of you. I only regret that you didn’t do this ten years ago.” That added to my determination to see it through.
We went back to that lunch counter every day for six months until African Americans were finally served in every restaurant.
71. What does the underlined word, “abuse” in the third paragraph probably mean?
A. Great encouragement. B. Good praise.
C. Unkind words. D. Direct advice.
72. Why did people focus on the author when he asked to be served?
A. Because he sat at the white people’s lunch counter.
B. Because he asked for coffee, which wasn’t served there.
C. Because he was very loud and was disturbed other people.
D. Because he was new to the Woolworth’s restaurant.
73. Which of the following words best describes the author?
A. Strange. B. Kind-hearted. C. Courageous. D. Stubborn(固执的).
74. Which of the following is TRUE, according to the text?
A. The author’s friends were disappointed with him.
B. The old lady was in support of the author.
C. The old lady called the policeman in to deal with the matter.
D. The author’s friends stopped the matter from getting worse.
75. What can be inferred from the text?
A. The author’s goal was to fight with white people.
B. The author was not satisfied with the service at Woolworth’s.
C. The policeman was very rude and the author was afraid.
D. African Americans had a long struggle for equal rights.

Long ago there lived a powerful king. Some of his ideas were good, but others caused people to suffer. One of the king’s ideas was to set up a public arena(竞技场). When a person was accused of a crime, his future would be decided in this arena. It had two doors, side by side, exactly alike. The accused person was taken into the arena and asked to open one. Behind one door was a hungry tiger, while behind the other was a lady chosen especially for him. To this lady he would be immediately married, in honor of his innocence.
The king had a beautiful daughter whom he loved very much , and she secretly loved a young commoner(平民). When the king discovered their relationship, the man was immediately put in prison, and a day was set for him to enter the arena.
The princess knew behind which door stood the tiger, and behind which a lady. She also knew that the lady was one of the loveliest in the kingdom. The princess hated the woman behind that silent door.
As he entered the arena and his eyes met the princess’s, the young man knew that she knew behind which door waited the tiger, and behind which stood the lady. The princess raised her hand, and made a short, quick movement toward the right. No one but her lover saw it. Every eye was fixed on him. He turned, and with a firm, quick step he walked across the empty space to the door on the right and opened it.
Now, the point of the story is this: Did the tiger come out of that door, or did the lady? The more we think about this question, the harder it is to answer. It involves a study of the human heart. The soul of the princess loved the young man but also burned under the fires of sadness and jealousy(嫉妒).
The question of her decision cannot be easily answered. And so I leave it with all of you: which came out of the open door? The lady or the tiger?

63. From the passage we know that __________.
A. the princess stood behind the right door
B. the young man trusted the princess completely

B. The lady behind the door would be killed.
C. The princess would lose her lover regardless of what happened.
D. The king knew what the result of the trial(审判)would be.
65. Which of the following is TRUE about the princess’s decision?
