第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)

第一节阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

The United States of America is faced with serious traffic problems. Too many cars travel on the freeways to and from the city. This heavy traffic causes delays and lots of pollution from cars that are using their engines but not moving anywhere. Many cars going nowhere is called a “traffic jam”.

While many cities in the United States have traffic problems, some of the worst are in Los Angeles,California, which is a big city with a large downtown area. One of the reasons why there is so much traffic is that few people use public transportation to get around.

Experts say one possible solution to the traffic problems in Los Angeles would be to make people want to use the public transportation system of buses instead of their own cars. People say the buses should be made easier, faster, less costly and more dependable than driving a car.

One suggestion is to reduce the cost of taking the bus. Also,Los Angeles could make the buses easier for people to use. The buses could travel to more places in the city. And there could be more special lanes on the freeways that only buses could drive in. These changes would make taking the bus faster and easier than driving a car.

Other experts have said that the best way to ease traffic problems is to charge people money to drive on the freeways. These charges,or tolls, would be for the most crowded roads. The tolls would be in effect during the times of a day when most people drive to work and home. These times in the morning and late afternoon are called “rush hour”. People would try to avoid driving on these roads, which would decrease the amount of traffic. C(2013 •天津)

When asked about happiness,we usually think of something extraordinary,an absolute delight, which seems to get rarer the older we get.

For kids, happiness has a magical quality. Their delight at winning a race or getting a new bike is unreserved (毫无掩饰的) .

In the teenage years the concept of happiness changes. Suddenly it's conditional on such things as excitement, love and popularity. I can still recall the excitement of being invited to dance with the most attractive boy at the school party.

In adulthood the things that bring deep joy — love, marriage, birth—also bring responsibility and the risk of loss. For adults, happiness is complicated (复杂的) .

My definition of happiness is “the capacity for enjoyment”. The more we can enjoy what we have, the happier we are. It's easy to overlook the pleasure we get from the company of friends, the freedom to live where we please, and even good health.

I experienced my little moments of pleasure yesterday. First I was overjoyed when I shut the last lunch-box and had the house to myself. Then I spent an uninterrupted morning writing, which I love. When the kids and my husband came home,I enjoyed their noise after the quiet of the day.

Psychologists tell us that to be happy we need a mix of enjoyable leisure time and satisfying work. I don't think that my grandmother, who raised 14 children, had much of either. She did have a network of close friends and family, and maybe this is what satisfied her.

We,however, with so many choices and such pressure to succeed in every area, have turned happiness into one more thing weVe got to have. We5re so self-conscious about our “right” to it that it's making us miserable. So we chase it and equal it with wealth and success, without noticing that the people who have those things aren’t necessarily happier.

Happiness isn’t about what happens to us it's about how we see what happens to us. It's the skillful way of finding a positive for every negative. It's not wishing for what we don't have, but enjoying what we do possess.

46. As people grow older,they .

   A. feel it harder to experience happiness

   B. associate their happiness less with others

   C. will take fewer risks in pursuing happiness

   D. tend to believe responsibility means happiness

   D. She prefers getting pleasure from housework.

48. What can be inferred from Paragraph 7 ?

   A. Psychologists think satisfying work is key to happiness.

   B. Psychologists’ opinion is well proved by Grandma's case.

   C. Grandma often found time for social gatherings.

   D. Grandma?s happiness came from modest expectations of life.

49. People who equal happiness with wealth and success .

   A. consider pressure something blocking their way

   B. stress their right to happiness too much

   C. are at a loss to make correct choices

   D. are more likely to be happy

50. What can be concluded from the passage?

   A. Happiness lies between the positive and the negative.

   B. Each man is the master of his own fate.

   C. Success leads to happiness.

   D. Happy is he who is content.

第三部分书面表达(共三节,满分35分)

第一节阅读表达(共4小题;每小题2. 5分,满分10分)

No one can believe that the over 6 ,300-kilome-tre-long Great Wall might disappear some day. Believe it or not,the Great Wall is being destroyed by people. Less than 20 percent of the Great Wall built in the Ming Dynasty is still perfect, but about 80 percent is in danger. The Great Wall can be called “great” mostly because of its amazing length. But we should realise that the length was made up of one brick at a time.  ,it will become a series of separate wasteland rather than a historic site.

The Great Wall is actually a series of walls built and rebuilt by different dynasties over the past 2 ,000 years. The parts built before the Ming Dynasty have nearly disappeared. People are familiar with sections such as Badaling in Beijing and Jiayuguan Pass in Gansu, because they have been open to tourists for many years. But those sections far away from the public eyes have almost been forgotten.

The bricks on the Great Wall were carried off by country people to build their houses, sheep corrals and pigsties. Some were taken away to build roads. Bricks carved with peopled names were put away as remembrances. Rubbish was spread over the battlements (城垛) . The bricks can be sold for 15 yuan per tractor load. Those who destroyed and are destroying the Wall know its name, but arc not clear about its cultural meaning. It will take a long time to let them know this. The local farmers not only carried off the body of the Wall but also dug out the entire base.

It is necessary to protect the Great Wall. The officials should be aware of the importance of the Great Wall and the young Chinese should know more about the nation's great civilisation and learn to love it.

56. What is the best title of the passage? (No more than 6 words)

57. Which sentence in the passage can be replaced by the following one?

However, they have nearly forgotten the parts of the Great Wall that are not well known to the public.

58. Please fill in the blank in the first paragraph with proper words or phrases to complete the sentence. (No more than 10 words)

59. Translate the underlined sentence in the third paragraph into Chinese.
