I have to admit: I don’t flush(冲) the toilet every time I go to the bathroom. In fact, I firmly believe “If it’s yellow, let it mellow; if it’s brown, flush it down.”
I’m sure a lot of it has to do with the fact that I work at home. Alone (well, except for the cats and dog). All day. And I drink a lot of water, which makes for many trips to the bathroom.
Another thing I have to admit: I also try to use very little toilet paper. I wash my hands after, though. Every time. (So maybe the water I don’t use flushing makes up for the water used to wash my hands?)
Ironically, my husband, who only uses toilet paper when necessary, always flushes. But he doesn’t seem to mind that I don’t flush every time. Or, at least not enough to file for divorce. Yet.

When I’m at home alone I do not flush every time I pee(小便).  My husband hates that, though, so when he’s home, I flush a little more often.  I grew up doing that because I had a family that lived with huge tanks and you have to do it that way because it’s easier on the system, so it doesn’t bother me.  I do flush when I’m out in public, at people’s houses that don’t have big tanks and when we have company!

Not always. But I have 4 children who are always hanging from the door knob(球形捏手) while I pee anyway. So I’m lucky I have time to wash my hands after. The average toilet uses 8 gallons of water per flush! Much less than what it takes to wash my hands after. (just saying)

It was Christmas 1961. I was teaching in a small town where my twenty-seven third graders eagerly   36  the great day of gift-giving in advance.

I wondered what   39  happen to this quiet child, once so happy, now suddenly so withdrawn. I hoped the festivities would   40  her. But nothing did. The students made the fried marbles(油炸玻璃弹子)and competed with one anther to bring the   41  ones.
The day of gift-giving finally came. We cheered over our handiwork as the presents were   42 . All along, she sat quietly watching. To see her smile, I had made a special bag for her. She opened it so slowly and carefully. I waited but she   43 . I had not passed through the wall of isolation she had   44  around herself.
After school I sat down in a chair, hardly   45  of what was happening, when she came to me with outstretched hands, bearing a small white box, and slightly soiled,   46  it had been held many times by   47 , childish hands. She said nothing. “For me?” I asked. She said not a word, but   48  her head. I took the box and cautiously opened it. There inside, glistening green, a fried marble   49  from a golden chain. Then I looked into that eight-year-old   50  and saw the question in her dark brown eyes. In a flash I knew — she had   51  it for her mother, who had died just three weeks before and would never hold her or brush her hair or   52  her childish joys or sorrows.
I meant it when I whispered, “Oh, Maria, it is so beautiful. Your mother would   53  it.” Neither of us could stop the   54 . She threw herself into my arms and we wept together. And for that brief moment I became her mother, for she had given me the greatest   55  of all: her trust and love.

One silly question I simply can’t understand is "How do you feel?" Usually the question I asked of a man’s action-a man on the go, walking along the street or busily working at his desk. So what do you expect him to say? He’ll probably say," Fine, I’m all right," but you’ve put a bug in his ear. ——Maybe now he’s not sure. If you are a good friend, you may have seen something in his face, or his walk, that he overlooked(忽略)that morning. It starts him worrying a little. First thing you know, he looks in a mirror to see if everything is all right, while you go merrily on your way asking someone else. "How do you feel?"
Every question has its time and place. It’s perfectly acceptable, for example, to ask "How do you feel?" if you’re visiting a close friend in hospital. But if the fellow is walking on both legs, hurrying take a train, or sitting at his desk working, it’s no time to ask him that silly question.
When George Bernard Shaw, the famous writer of plays, was in his eighties, someone asked him, "How do you feel?" Shaw put him in his place. "When you reach my age," he said, "either you feel all right or you’re dead."
小题1:According to the writer, greetings such as "how do you feel"_______.
A.show one’s consideration for others. B.are a good way to make friends
C.are proper to ask a man in actionD.generally make one feel uneasy.

A.a man working at his desk.B.a person having lost a close friend.
C.a stranger who looks worried.D.a friend who is ill.

A.be praised for his efforts.B.never be asked any question.
C.not be bothered(烦扰).D.be discouraged from working so hard.
小题4:You’ve put a bug in his ear means that you’ve ________.
A.made him laugh.B.shown concern for him
C.made fun of himD. given him some kind of warning.

One evening I went out and left my 17-year-old son in charge of his 8-year-old brother and 4-year-old sister. On this occasion, the work was made less troublesome by the presence of his girlfriend.I left with complete confidence that the older children would do a wonderful job of babysitting the younger children.Later,I discovered that complete confidence was the last thing I should have left home with.
I had decided to return home earlier than planned so that my son and his girlfriend could go out.I called home with this happy news. But instead of hearing his cheerful, grateful voice on the other end of the line, all I heard was the sound of a telephone ringing.
It was,I should point out, after 10 p.m.,when the two younger children should have been in bed.and when the two older children should have been answering the phone.“I’ll give him a lesson.”I said.I decided they must be outside. Why they might be outside at 10∶30 on a winter night I had no idea, but it was the only explanation I could come up with.
Finally,in desperation,I called his girlfriend’s house.After what seemed like countless rings,his girlfriend answered.“Yes,”she said brightly,“He’s right here.”
He came on the phone.I was not my usual calm, rational(理智的)self. After all,one of the rules of survival for modern parents is that you can’t trust modem teenagers.“Where are the children?”I said.He said they were with him. They had done nothing wrong. My son had taken the younger children over to his girlfriend’s house just for ice cream and cake. This was too good to be believed.Well,it turns out that I shouldn’t have believed it.It was only part of the truth.
The following Saturday evening we were at my parents home, celebrating my birthday. My oldest son gave me the children’s gifts.Mounted and framed were a series of lovely color photographs of my children, dressed in their best clothes, and wearing their most wonderful expressions. They are pictures to treasure a lifetime, all taken by the father of my son’s girlfriend.

I was walking along the main street of a small seaside town in the north of England looking for somewhere to make a phone call. My car had broken down outside the town and I wanted to contact the AA Company. Low grey clouds were gathering across the sky and there was a cold damp wind blowing off the sea which nearly threw me off my feet every time I crossed one of the side streets. It had rained in the night and water was dripping from the bare trees that lined the street. I was glad that I was wearing a thick coat.
There was no sign of a call box, nor was there anyone at that early hour whom I could ask. I had thought I might find a shop open selling the Sunday papers or a milkman doing his rounds, but the town was completely dead. The only living thing I saw was a thin frightened cat outside a small restaurant.
Then suddenly I found what I was looking for. There was a small post office, and almost hidden from sight in a dark narrow street. Next to it was the town’s only public call box, which badly needed a coat of paint. I hurried forward, but stopped in astonishment when I saw through the dirty glass that there was a man inside. He was fat, and was wearing a cheap blue plastic raincoat. I could not see his face and he didn’t raise his head at the sound of my footsteps.
Carefully, I remained standing a few feet away and lit a cigarette to wait for my turn. It was when I threw the dead match on the ground that I noticed something bright red trickling from under the box call door
小题1: At what time was the story set?
A.An early winter morningB.A cold winter afternoon
C.An early summer morningD.A windy summer afternoon
小题2: Which of the following words best describe the writer’s impression of the town?

C.He was probably fast asleep.
D.He was probably murdered.

Sometimes life makes more sense when you look at it in reverse (相反). That's certainly been true for me.
Last Christmas, at 39, I caught a disease which attacked my knees and eyes. At its worst I could hardly walk or see. For months I' d have to crawl (爬) across the floor to use the bathroom or get a drink of water when my husband wasn't home. For a while I could only see shapes and colors so I couldn't drive.
My parents kept begging me to let them come out to stay with me in Los Angeles, but our apartment is small and I knew there was nothing they could really do to help me. For the excellent health insurance my husband had through his job, I was receiving the best medical care possible.
My only problem was that I couldn't drive to my doctors' appointments and I didn't want my husband to keep missing work to drive me. Three days after I explained this to my parents, a check came from them with a note saying this was "taxi money". Several months later another check showed up from my brother to help make up our income since I wasn't able to work. It probably goes without saying that I was extremely grateful to have family members who could and would support me during the hard time.
In terms of my day-to-day existence, I live in a village within Los Angeles called Brentwood so I was able to walk to the local post office, market, bank, and library. But once there, I had to depend on the kindness of strangers to help me. Los Angeles is a big city, but I lived in a village with a wonderful community (社区) of people who were kind and patient.
Slowly I became well. Life was good again and I thought I had a clear understanding of the blessings (恩惠) this illness has provided.

A.Her husband didn't drive well.
B.Her husband was too busy.
C.She didn't want to affect his work.
D.Her doctor was far away from her.
小题3:What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A.The help that the author received from her family members.
B.The influence of the author's disease on her family.
C.The author's thanks to her family members.
D.The way the author saw her doctors.
小题4:What did the author feel about Brentwood?
A.She thought it was small but convenient.
