Dear Peter,
How are you doing?
I¡¯m writing to tell you that I want to buy an English dictionary suitable for senior high school students. A few days ago, I went to my local bookstores and saw many different kinds on sale, but I couldn¡¯t make up my mind which to buy. Will you please recommend one to me? Or, if it is convenient to you, would you like to buy one for me in Beijing?
My brother Li Ming will go to Beijing next week. If you don¡¯t mind, I will give him your telephone number and address, and possibly he can take it back for me. Of course, I¡¯ll tell him to give the money at the same time.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿I¡¯ve recently discovered that I have a second personality(¸öÐÔ) when I speak English, compared to the original me when I speak Chinese.
Speaking English brings out ¡¾1¡¿ more outgoing, enthusiastic, relaxed and confident side of me. I am also more open ¡¾2¡¿ physical expressions when speaking English, such as hugging, gesturing and using more exaggerated (¿äÕŵÄ)¡¾3¡¿ (face) expressions. I have to say I love this new version of me ¡¾4¡¿ (well).
Similar things happened to my friend when we were traveling in Japan. My friend, a Chinese ¡¾5¡¿(speak) fluent Japanese, showed a more modest and gentle attitude when using Japanese. I think it must have something ¡¾6¡¿ (do) with the fact ¡¾7¡¿ the Japanese use special words and styles to show respect for an older person or a person at a higher position than themselves.
So learning a new language is really worthwhile. We can not only have direct ¡¾8¡¿ (communicate) with people from other countries, but also fully understand ¡¾9¡¿(we) and explore the different sides of us.
I¡¯ve recently started to learn German. Probably in a few years I ¡¾10¡¿ (see) a more cautious, accurate and hardworking version of myself.

It is necessary but difficult for English beginners to memorize new words, and long lists of words
seem to make the mission impossible. They are puzzled why they try to memorize words with great ef-
forts but forget them easily. That's why there are often inquiries about how to memorize new words.
¡¾1¡¿ Here are some tips to help.
¡¾2¡¿ We too often separate the process of new words memorization from pronunciation. In fact
these two can be combined and each will enhance the other. Saying the word to ourselves helps acti-
vate aural(hearing) memory, which helps the memory. ¡¾3¡¿ The more familiar we are with the word,
the greater chance we will have to keep it for the rest of our life.
Never memorize single English words. ¡¾4¡¿ Relate the word to terms we already know, either as
synonym or antonym. For example, the word "gargantuan" is similar in meaning to words "gigantic",
¡±huge" and "large". Make a sequence of words: "small, medium, large, gigantic, and gargantuan".
Create a mental image of the word that involves strong emotions. Think, "The gargantuan whale is go-
ing to swallow me whole".
Learning English words requires action. Complaining how difficult it is to memorize new words
will be of little help. ¡¾5¡¿ Have a try with ten words a day and you will see what a difference you will
make in our English learning.
A. So take action right now.
B. Speak the word while memorizing it.
C. Memorizing new words is very important.
D. Actually, some have given up learning new words.
E. In fact, learning new words needn't be that difficult.
F. Make as many associations and connections as possible.
G. The sound of word helps us recall the spelling and familiarizes us with the word.

It is Mother¡¯s Day today. Mom has a full-time job, so she has to do most of the houseworks. She is a great mother. Both Dad or I planned to do something on Mother¡¯s Day. We get up early in the morning. Dad cleaned the house, and then went on shopping. While he came back, I found a bunch of flowers in her hand. I asked Mom to stay in the sitting room and I cooked dishes in kitchen. The dishes I cooked was Mom¡¯s favorite. At dinner, we said to her, ¡°Happy Mother¡¯s Day!¡± Mom was grateful and moving to tears.
