【题目】You wait in a long queue in the supermarket, but when it’s finally your turn to pay, you can’t find enough money in your purse. 1 While you are bending down to look for them, the people behind you are getting angry. The cashier is pounding her fingers impatiently on the counter.

2 But the good news is: scientists have thought of a way to make queues shorter and paying for things easier. They have invented an eye scanner. In the future, when you pay for food at the supermarket, an eye scanner will take a picture of your eyes and a computer will identify you. 3

Students at Venerable Bede School, England, have already got an eye scanner in their cafeteria. After the students choose the food they want, the scanner looks for their information and sends a list of the food to their parents. 4 Also, parents pay for the meals at the end of the week, so the students don’t have to take money to school and wait in long queues to pay for their lunch.

If all shops had eye scanners, shopping would be easier. 5 So, it seems that it will be a while before most of us get our eyes scanned at the cashier.

A. Sometimes shopping can be unpleasant.

B. You take out your credit cards, but they fall on the floor.

C. If students aren’t eating a healthy diet, their parents will know.

D. Stores are trying several new ways to get shoppers to spend more.

E. Parents are urging the government to introduce better security safeguards.

F. However, eye scanners are very expensive and many shops can’t afford them.

G. As soon as the machine finds your information, it will send it to your bank which pays for your food automatically.

1根据空格前you can’t find enough money in your purse以及空格后While you are bending down to look for them, the people behind you are getting angry(当你弯下腰去找它们时,你身后的人会生气)可知,B项“你拿出你的信用卡,但是它们掉到了地板上。”承上启下,故选B。

2根据空格后But the good news is...(但好消息是……)可知,“But”转折,前一句是说购物有时也会不愉快。故选A。

3根据空格前In the future, when you pay for food at the supermarket, an eye scanner will take a picture of your eyes and a computer will identify you(在未来,当你在超市为食物付钱时,眼睛扫描仪会给你的眼睛拍照,电脑会识别你)可知,后一句应该说一旦电脑识别了你的信息,它就会自动寄给你的银行。故选G。

4根据第三段After the students choose the food they want, the scanner looks for their information and sends a list of the food to their parents(当学生们选择他们想要的食物后,扫描仪就会寻找他们的信息,并向他们的父母发送食物清单)可知,如果学生不健康饮食,他们的父母就会知道。故选C。

5根据空格后So, it seems that it will be a while before most of us get our eyes scanned at the cashier.(我们大多数人用眼睛扫描仪似乎还需要一段时间)可知,前一句是说眼睛扫描仪非常昂贵,很多店都买不起。故选F。

More children 1(allow) to choose their favorite clothes, which is 2relatively new trend. Many years ago, children had to suffer the whims(突发奇想)of adults as far as clothes were concerned. Like 3(adult) clothes, children’s clothes followed fashions as well. For many unlucky boys, these carefully planned and organized costumes were nor reserved for special occasions; they had to wear the same 9(restrict)and uncomfortable outfits for everyday play. Clean and proper clothes say that the person has both self-respect and respect for other people. Clothing can tell quite a lot about the person, sometimes more than we would like to reveal. So we should pay more attention to 10(wear) proper clothes in different occasions.

Here's a surprising fact: Of the 1.1 million firefighters in the United States, about 780,000 are volunteers. Roughly a third of the population is 1 by mostly- or all-volunteer fire departments.
Also 2, perhaps. Sometimes they have to pay for their own gear.
I 3 this because I volunteer as a firefighter in Durango, Colorado. I responded to more than 50 calls in 2014, everything from 4 to car accidents. In that period, I spent close to $1,000 on optional gear not supplied by my 5, things like higher-quality flashlights, knives, and better gloves, which make my 6 easier.
Yesterday, a 7 was introduced in Congress that would give a significant tax break to those who volunteer their time as 8 responders. I hope it passes, not because it will put some money in my pocket 9, hey, (that'll be nice) but because it will ease the financial burden on volunteers and acknowledge their time commitment. I believe it will 10 more people to help.
And we 11 that.
In 12 areas where population density is low and calls for fire and EMS services are relatively rare, it just doesn't 13 to have career firefighters on the staff 24/7 (全天候). 14, volunteers are used to fill in the 15. We are ready to put our regular lives aside to help someone on what is the 16 day of their life. We have likely never met before, and might never again, but it doesn't 17 in a crisis. Without volunteers, the whole system would collapse.
There's a T-shirt that's popular among us, reading “For Pride, Not 18.” We volunteer because we know our 19 need us. We don't need a small tax break. Without one, we'll still put on our gear when the alarm goes off without any 20. But we'd appreciate one, and if it encourages more people to join us, it's worth it.

【题目】根据短文理解,选择正确答案。
Baby girls make their way to dolls as soon as they can crawl, while boys will head for the toy cars, a study has shown. The findings, the first to show consistent differences in very young babies, suggest there is a biological basis to their preferences.
Psychologists Dr Brenda Todd from City University London carried out an experiment involving 90 babies aged nine months to 36 months. They were allowed to choose from seven toys. Some were boys' toys - a car, a digger, a ball and a blue teddy. The rest were girls' toys: a pink teddy, a doll and a cooking set. They were placed a meter away from the toys, and could pick whichever toy they liked. Their choice and the amount of time they spent playing with each toy were recorded.
Of the youngest children (nine to 14 months), girls spent much longer playing with the doll than boys, and boys spent much more time with the car and ball than the girls did. Among the two-and three-year-olds, girls spent 50 percent of the time playing with the doll while only two boys briefly touched it. The boys spent almost 90 percent of their time playing with cars, which the girls barely touched. There was no link between the parents' view on which toys were more appropriate for boys or girls, and the children's choice.
Dr Brenda Todd said: “Children of this age are already exposed to much socialization. Boys may be given ‘toys that go' while girls get toys they can care for, which may help shape their preference. But these findings agree with the former idea that children show natural interests in particular kinds of toys. There could be a biological basis for their choices. Males through evolution have been adapted to prefer moving objects, probably through hunting instincts(本能), while girls prefer warmer colors such as pink, the color of a newborn baby.”
(1)Baby boys and girls have different toy preferences probably because.
A.baby boys are much more active
B.baby girls like bright colors more
C.parents have an effect on their views
D.there may be a biological difference
(2)Both baby boys and baby girls like to play withaccording to the study.
A.a ball
B.a teddy
C.a car
D.a doll
(3)What can we infer from Paragraph 3 ?
A.Nine-month-old baby boys don't play with dolls at all.
B.Two-year-old baby girls sometimes play with cars and balls.
C.Parents should teach their babies to share each other's toys.
D.The older the babies are, the more obvious their preference is.
(4)What conclusion did Dr. Brenda Todd draw from the results of the study?
A.Adults bring about babies' preference on purpose.
B.Babies' preference isn't affected by social surroundings.
C.Baby boys preferring to moving toys will be good at hunting.
D.Baby girls preferring warmer colors will be warm-hearted.
