Making Peace with Your Parents

As a teen, you’re going through big changes physically and mentally. Your interests are expanding.

1.

Here is the challenge: Kids need to explore the world in new ways, and parents need to protect them from the dangers that are out in that world. These conflicts can easily set off fireworks in otherwise calm houses. Sometimes conflicts can’t be avoided. But by paying attention to the building blocks of successful relationships, you can work towards making home a happy and healthy place for you and your parents.

For instance, try to find a time to talk when your parents are not angry, tired, distracted, or hungry. A good time to talk is when you’re all relaxed. Timing is everything. If the conversation begins to turn into an argument, you’d better calmly and coolly ask to stop the conversation -- for now. 2. Listen to what your parents are saying, and repeat it back to them. This shows them that you’re listening. 3. Respect is the building block of good communication. People who respect each other and care about each other’s feelings can disagree without things getting ugly. 4. How do you build trust? Trust comes by actually doing what you say you’re going to do. Some teens find that doing fun activities with their parents can improve their relationships. Sometimes we forget that parents are more than rule-makers—they’re interesting people who like to watch movies, and go shopping—just like their teenagers!

What do you do if you are trying your best, but your relationship with your parents continues to be rocky? 5. You can find supportive adults, such as a teacher or a coach, who can lend an ear.

Remember you can only change your own behavior; your parents are the only ones who can change theirs.

A. It also gives them a chance to clear things up if you’re not on the same page.

B. You can pick it up again when everyone’s more relaxed.

C. And then you’ll be able to accept what your parents say.

D. Faced with the challenge, children don’t know what to do.

E. You are more likely to get along with your parents and have more independence if your parents believe in you.

F. And your desire to take control of your own life is growing.

G. You may consider seeking outside help.

科目:高中英语 来源:2014-2015学年山东潍坊四县市高一上期中模块监测英语试卷(解析版) 题型:阅读理解

Our children grew up on peanut butter and jelly (果冻) sandwiches. Even my husband and I sometimes ate one secretly at late night with a glass of milk. It was too delicious and tasty. My mother-in-law was the jelly maker in this family. The jelly was made of either grape or blackberry. The only job I did to the jelly making was to save baby food jars (罐子), which my mother-in-law would fill with the tasty gel (凝胶体), pack them up and send back to our home. For the past 22 years of my married life, whenever I wanted to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for ourselves, all I had to do was reach for one of those little jars of jelly. It was always there.

This past December, my mother-in-law passed away. Among the things in the house to be divided by her children were the remaining canned goods in the pantry (食品储藏室). When my husband brought his jars home, we carefully put them away in our pantry.

The other day I reached in there to get jelly for a quick sandwich, and there it was. Sitting all alone on the far side of the shelf was a small jar of grape jelly. As I picked up the jar, I suddenly realized something that I had failed to see earlier-this was the last jar we would ever have from my mother-in-law. Although she had been dead for nearly a year, so much of her had remained with us. Our children had never known a day without their grandmother’s jelly. It seems like such a small thing, and most days it was something that was ignored. But today it seemed a great treasure.

No longer was it just a jar of jelly. It was the end of a family tradition. I believed that as long as it was there, a part of my mother-in-law would always live on.

1.Why did the couple eat the jelly secretly at late night?

A. Because it was very delicious and nice.

B. Because it was only made for children.

C. Because it was made by mother-in-law.

D. Because it was good to health.

2.What can we know about the author in making jelly?

A. She could make baby food by herself.

B. She could only collect baby food jars.

C. She helped her mother fill the jars with the tasty gel.

D. She sent the jelly jars home with her husband.

3.What did the mother-in-law leave to the author?

A. The skills to make jelly.

B. Some baby food in the house.

C. Some canned jars filled with jelly.

D. A lot of money.

4.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A. a quick sandwich B. the shelf

C. grape D. jelly

5.What’s the author’s purpose in writing the passage?

A. To miss her mother-in-law.

B. To introduce the skills of making jelly.

C. To remember the family tradition.

D. To warn people to be nice to the old.

科目:高中英语 来源:2014-2015学年河南新野第三高级中学高一上第二次月考英语试卷(解析版) 题型:阅读理解

Our need to communicate with each other has been a driving force in the development of technology. In the 20th century we have seen the invention of the radio, television, telephone and fax, and today the Internet has opened up a whole new way of communicating. We now have instant messaging services such as ICQ or China's QQ and chat rooms where people can join group discussions. They mean increasing choices for when, where and how to communicate, and more importantly, with whom.

While most people use the Internet to keep in touch with friends and family, a growing number of people use QQ and chat rooms to meet and chat with strangers. Because the Internet allows a certain amount of anonymity, users can be more open making it easier to make new friends. One user said that everyone is equal online, and age and appearance become unimportant. This makes it easier for people to communicate with each other.

Finding new friends is not the only reason people use chat rooms. The Internet can bring together like-minded people who want to discuss their favourite topics. There are chat rooms for certain sports, types of music, styles of art, in fact, just about any interest you can imagine, and many that you can't! Whatever unusual interest you might have, if you search on the Internet, there is a good chance that you will find someone, somewhere in cyberspace, willing to talk to you about it-right now.

However, there are problems with going online. It is possible for cyber-criminals to steal information such as credit card details while you are online, and there is always the chance that a new friend is not who he or she claims to be. One girl was really disappointed when she discovered that her new cyberfriend who wrote poems for her, was actually copying all the poems from magazines. But for all the problems that might come up, instant messaging services and chat rooms are here to stay, putting in touch with friends, family and strangers of similar interests.

1.People use the Internet to .

A. chat to friends and meet family

B. meet strangers and write poems

C. chat to friends, family and strangers

2.What does anonymity (para. 2) mean?

A. The state of being unknown.

B. The state of being friendly.

C. The state of being online.

3.What types of topics will people discuss on the Internet?

B. All kinds of topics.

C. Only topics that the Internet allows.

4.What is an example of problems with going online?

A. Some people may send you poems copied from magazines.

B. Your credit card details could be stolen.

C. There might be no one to chat with.
