“Lydia is dead. But they don’t know this yet . . .” So begins the story of this exquisite debut novel, about a Chinese American family living in 1970s small-town Ohio. Lydia is the favorite child of Marilyn and James Lee; their middle daughter, a girl who inherited her mother’s bright blue eyes and her father’s jet-black hair. Her parents are determined that Lydia will fulfill the dreams they were unable to pursue—in Marilyn’s case that her daughter become a doctor rather than a homemaker, in James’s case that Lydia be popular at school, a girl with a busy social life and the center of every party.

When Lydia’s body is found in the local lake, the delicate balancing act that has been keeping the Lee family together is destroyed, tumbling them into chaos. James, consumed by guilt, sets out on a reckless path that may destroy his marriage. Marilyn, devastated and vengeful, is determined to find a responsible party, no matter what the cost. Lydia’s older brother, Nathan, is certain that the neighborhood bad boy Jack is somehow involved. But it’s the youngest of the family—Hannah—who observes far more than anyone realizes and who may be the only one who knows the truth about what happened.

A profoundly moving story of family, history, and the meaning of home, Everything I Never Told You is both a gripping page-turner and a sensitive family portrait, exploring the divisions between cultures and the rifts within a family, and uncovering the ways in which mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, and husbands and wives struggle, all their lives, to understand one another.

【题目】Kang Heng, 16, hasn’t been sleeping well in a tent the past couple of nights. Closing his eyes only brings repeated terror from all that happened and, worse still, all that could have happened at around 2:30 pm last Monday.

The student in Dongcheng High School in Mianyang, Sichuan Province was on his way to class after an afternoon nap(小睡) when the big earthquake hit the area.

“It’s a complete shock! As soon as I heard someone screaming Earthquake! I saw our classroom building being torn apart just in front of my eyes. The next second I saw a student jumping out of the window from the second floor, Tang recalled.

As the electricity was cut off, his teachers shouted as loud as they could to gather all the students in the school onto the playground. Although some were wounded by falling objects or injured while running out, they at least escaped death.

Kang and his parents were among them. They drove in rain to Anxian County, an hour drive away from Mianyang, with water, instant noodles and plastic for building tents. Kang’s family finally found his terrified grandparents in Anxian on Wednesday morning.

How Children Succeed, by Paul Tough

Journalist Tough spent five years reporting his previous (先前的) book, Whatever It Takes, a description of education activist Geoffrey Canada and the families influenced by his organization, the Harlem Children’s Zone. In this 2012 follow-up, Tough sets out to answer the difficult questions raised by Whatever It Takes: Why do some kids — particularly poor ones — succeed while others fail? And how can parents and educators help guide more children towards success?

The Death and Life of the Great American School System, by Diane Ravitch

Ravitch, a professor in New York University, takes a hard look at how public education has changed over the past twenty years, offering a reasoned explanation of popular policies, such as the emphasis (强调) on testing, and a solution (解决方法) to how to improve America’s schools.

Saving the School, by Michael Brick

When Anabel Garza became headteacher of Reagan High in Austin, Tex, she was faced with a large number of seemingly very difficult problems: A high dropout rate (辍学率) and low test scores. But as Brick writes Saving the School, a first-hand account of a year in the life of Reagan High, Garza, along with other teachers, was determined to turn things around for her school and her students.

The Flat World and Education, by Linda Darling Hammond

While scores on the tests required by “No Child Left Behind” have steadily (平稳地) risen, America’s students are always falling behind on international testing measures. Why? According to Stanford education professor Darling-Hammond, it’s because U.S. schools, “designed at the turn of the last century,” are in need of a complete change. In this book, she describes the latest education models used by schools all over the world, which she argues could offer a long-term road map to changing the American public school system.
