Taking the dog to the beach on a hot summer's day is a great way to relax. But not all beaches are dog
friendly. So if you're looking to take your dog to the coast this summer, here's a few of the country's most
dog-friendly beaches.

Sunshine Beach Where: Noosa, Queensland

Only a 10-minute drive from Noosa, Sunshine Beach also welcomes dogs with open paws. Once
known as Golden Beach, its long white beaches make it a paradise for anyone who loves fishing, boating,
surfing or just relaxing on the beach with family and friends.  Restrictions (限定): Dogs can freely explore
the shoreline from Noosa National Park to the path leading from Seaview Terrace.

Tallow Beach Where: Byron Bay, New South Wales
With white sand that stretches (延伸) for miles, and clean, clear waters washing its shores, Byron
certainly doesn't want for beautiful beaches - and Tallow Beach is no exception
. This seven-kilometre-long beach stretches all the way to Broken Head Reserve.  Restrictions: The beach's dog-friendly area starts
near Jarman Street and stretches north to the outside of Arakwal National Park.
Muirs Beach Where: Coles Bay, Tasmania
One of the few beaches that falls outside of Freycinet National Park, Muirs, is a great family beach
that welcomes dogs, too. Compared to famous sheltered beaches of Freycinet, it is more open to the
waves from the Tasman Sea, making it ideal for windsurfing. The beach itself is very long, so there is
plenty of space to let your dog run free.  Restrictions: Dog owners must respect the environment and
use the poop bags provided at the entrance to the beach to get rid of any dog waste. Fines apply (运用).
Yorkeys Knob Beach Where: Queensland
Located just 15 minutes from Cairns, Yorkeys Knob Beach is a great spot to relax with your dog.
Named after a local fisherman called "Yorkey" who lived on the rocky hill ("knob"), this wonderful little
beach is one of the best-kept secrets in Tropical North Queensland. It is ideal for swimming and
snorkelling in the summer season.  Restrictions: The southern end of the beach is the "dog off-chain"
end where your dog is allowed to run free; dogs must be on a chain in all other areas of the beach.

  Crossroads International

  How does Crossroads work?

Crossroads is a resource network. We take goods Hong Kong doesn't want and give them to people who badly need them. We collect those goods and give them out in the welfare arena(福利院) in Hong Kong, Mainland China, elsewhere in Asia, Eastern Europe and Africa. So Crossroads is just that:a Crossroads between need and resource.

  Who do we help?

The welfare agencies we help do not run on large budgets(预算). They are grass-root groups who have seen a need and tried to meet it. They can't get the job done without back-up, though, so our task is to help them do their task. Our warehouse is full of goods, from computers to high chairs, clothing to books, stationery to medical provision, cupboards to dining sets. They send us a list of their needs and we try to match it with the resource we have in stock.

  How do we operate?

Crossroads itself also operates on a low budget. We do not buy the goods we send. They are donated(捐赠). Similarly, rather than raising funds for freight (货运), we ask transport companies to donate their services. Nobody in our organization receives a salary. Even our full-time staff work on a voluntary basis.

Those that donate goods and services:

  ●Factories

  ●Manufacturers

  ●Hospitals

  ●Hotels

  ●Educational Institutions

  ●Householders

  ●Transport Companies

  ●Offices

  ●Other Charities

One resource that we are always in need of is people. While we receive large quantities of goods and there is never a short supply of requests for them, we are always in need of hands to help sort and prepare them for shipping.

What can I do?

We are always in need of people. We have a lot of tasks. If you are volunteering regularly, we can offer work in some of the following categories, some of the time. You are welcome to number your top three choices and we will do our best to accommodate(提供) them.

  ●Clothing categorization

  ●Sewing

  ●Toy categorization

  ●Furniture handling

  ●Book categorization

  ●Driving

  ●Household goods categorization

  ●Office work

  ●Electrical goods categorization

  ●Book keeping

  ●Stationery categorization

  ●Fund-raising

  ●Medical categorization

  Where to find us

All volunteer work is done at our warehouse:

In the United States, friends can be close, constant, intense, generous, and real, yet fade away in a shorttime
if circumstances change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christ- mas greetings for a year or
two, perhaps a few letters for a while then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years
later, they pick up the friendship where it left out and are de- lighted.
In the United States, you can feel free to visit people's homes, share their holidays, enjoy their lives without
fear that you are tak ing on a lastinS obligation (负担). Do not hesitate to accept hospi tality (热情款待) because you can't give it in return. No one will expect you to do so for they know you are far from home. Americans
will enjoy welcoming you and be pleased if you accept their hospi tality easily.
Once you arrive there, the welcome will be full, warm and re al. Most visitors find themselves readily
invited into many homes there. In some countries it is considered inhospitable to entertain (招待) at home,
offering what is felt as only home-cooked food, not " doing something for your guest". It is felt that restaurant
entertaining shows more respect and welcome. Or for other different reasons, such as crowded space, language difficulties, or family custom, out- siders are not invited into homes.
In the United States, both methods are used, but it is often considered more friendly to invite a person to
one's home than to go to a public place, except in purely business relationships. So, if your host or hostess___,
do not feel that you are being shown inferior (差的,低级的 ) treatment.
Don't feel neglected (被轻视的) if you do not find flowers a- waiting you in your hotel room, either.
Flowers are very expensive there, hotel delivery is uncertain, arrival times are delayed, changed, or canceled
(取消)-so flowers are not customarily sent as a welcoming touch. Please do not feel unwanted! Outward

Saying "thank you" is probably the first thing most of us learn to do in a foreign language. After all,
we're brought up to be polite, and it is important to make a good impression upon other people-especially across national divides.
So, what exactly are you supposed to say when "thank you" is only the 20th most popular way to
express gratitude? According to a recent survey, 19 other ways of expressing appreciation finished ahead of "thank you" in a poll of 3,000 people.
Pollsters(民测调查员) found almost half of those asked preferred the more informal "cheers", while
others liked to use such expressions as "ta", "great" and "nice one".
So, just what is the appropriate form of words to express your thanks?
Fortunately, the clue is in the language itself. "Cheers", despite its popularity, is considered an
informal way to say thank you - and this is a definite clue as to when you can best use it.
For instance, when going for a drink with friends, a smile and a "cheers" by way of thanks is not only
appropriate to the situation, it is also culturally accurate.
"Ta", originated from the Danish word "tak", was the second-most popular expression of thanks, and
is also commonly used in informal situations, along with phrases such as "nice one", and "brilliant".
Interestingly, one word that didn't make it into the top 20 was "thanks", Thank you is shorter, more
informal cousin.
"Thanks" can be useful, as it is able to bridge the divide between the formality of "thank you" and the
downright relaxed "cheers".
Certain words can double as an expression of thanks as well as delight. Again, the words themselves
offer the clue as to when best to use them.
For example, words like "awesome", "brilliant" and "you star" featured highly in the new poll and they
can hint at both your pleasure at someone's action, as well as serving to express your thanks. If you are
on the receiving end of a "new" thank you, you can respond with a simple "no problem", or "sure".
Of course, in certain circumstances, a simple wave, nod or smile may be appropriate. For instance, if
a car driver slows down to let you cross the road, simply raising your hand in acknowledgement is enough to show that you appreciate the driver's consideration.
Sometimes, formality is necessary, and "thank you" is still the best choice in such situations. But students should not worry about when exactly to use certain expressions.
Many people in Western countries are worried that good manners are in decline. People are tired of
seeing their acts of kindness and service pass without comment. So don't think your "thank you" is clumsy or awkwardly formal. The chances are, if you said "thank you", you made someone's day. You star.

1.We can tell from the results of the poll that _______.
A. people are unconcerned about politeness nowadays.
B. "thank you" remains the best expression of gratitude.
C. there is a variety of expressions of appreciation.
D. there are more formal expressions than informal ones.
2. According to the passage, which is an appropriate response to "awesome" or "brilliant"?
A. Thanks.
B. Sure.
C. Nice one.
D. Cheers..
3. In the last paragraph the author encourages people to           .
A. show their gratitude to others.
B. behave themselves well.
C. continue their acts of kindness.
D. stop worrying about bad manners.
4. Which of the following can serve as the best title of this passage?
A. How to Appear More Polite.
B. Ways to Show Gratitude.
C. Never hesitate to Say "Thank You".
D. Good Manners in Decline!
