Across the United States there are several places where two independent towns grew together to
become one city-but kept both their names.
Winston-Salem is one of them. It's a mid-sized city in what's called the plateau(high land), between
the Atlantic Coast and the inland mountains in the state of North Carolina. The Winston part is a
relatively new place, founded early last century. It's home to the nation's biggest open-air tobacco
market.
The giant R.J.Reynolds Tobacco Company's headquarters is in Winston-Salem and Winston is the
name of one of Reynolds' best-known cigarette brands. Fast-growing Winston soon surrounded the
much older town of Salem, so in 1913, people in the area voted to combine them into a single place.
From historical and tourist point of view, Salem, or Old Salem, as it's called today, is the interesting
and unusual part of town.
Salem was founded in the 1700s by the Moravians. They spoke German, and their community was
religiously based, with single men and single women living apart in separate dormitories. The Moravians
greatly valued women's work and brainpower. In fact, one of the nation's oldest boarding schools for
young women-the Moravians'Salem Academy founded in 1772-is still in operation.
Over the years, Salem lost its Moravian character. That all changed, though, when a nonprofit group
began to rehabilitate the historic area. These days Old Salem is what's called a living history museum,
with exhibits, music, and tours of 18th -century houses, taverns and Moravian dormitory buildings just
seven blocks from the tallest skyscraper in Winston-Salem.
The historic community is booming again. Just as R.J.Reynolds is taking in millions of dollars making
cigarettes across town, Old Salem is generating about $15 million a year in tourism revenue and donations.

1. From the passage we can know that ______________.
A. Winston-Salem is the name of a city
B. Salem is home to the tobacco market
C. the city Winston-Salem has two names
D. Old Salem is the name of a tobacco brand

2.  It can be inferred from Paragraph 3 that ______________.
A. the two cities benefited each other
B. Salem developed faster than Winston
C. R.J.Reynolds Company has moved into Salem
D. the combination meets the wishes of the people

3. The city Salem is special for its ______________.
A. boarding school
B. lifestyle and tradition
C. respect for brainpower
D. religious belief

4. The underlined word "rehabilitate" in Paragraph 6 is closest in meaning to "________________".

                                                       The Loss of Innocence(纯真)
Innocence is such a precious gift. It's explained as freedom from guilt or wrong doing. Just imagine
never having to worry about anything and having a guilt-free mind. Some people wish to save this kind
of innocence from being lost from childhood to adulthood.
What would the world be like if innocence were never lost? One way it would benefit humanity is the
lack of hatred (仇恨) among the world. During youth, there may be an occasional argument, even a little
physical fight, but nothing like firing a handgun at a fellow human being. And children are blind towards
the racial differences of others. A kid will hang out with any other kid. It is the lack of innocence and the
ignorance we learn from adults that influence children otherwise. Another benefit is the constant desire for
fun and adventure. With very little if any time at all for fun, the adventurous mind is lost in time with the
responsibilities placed upon adults. If innocence were kept alive, these ambitions would never depart from our lives.
However, other people actually hate the idea of innocence lasting for ever. They feel that the lack of
organization and mental power of those with innocence would cause extremely destructive consequences
to society in general. A large number of individuals would never have the urge to learn, work, and act
upon the necessary needs for humanity to survive. Without a proper education which is usually provided
by those who no longer live in a world of innocence, people would not have the desire to succeed, get a
good job in life, or provide income for their families, which
would hurt the lives of children.
The lack of a good education and career would also harm the economy. As long as innocence is kept
alive, no one would be terribly angry at the lack of effort people put out in the workplace, resulting in a
strong decline(减少) in production and quality of needed goods.
Maybe it is wrong in wanting to save innocence. It sure is a nice thought, though. Perhaps innocence
was meant to be lost. It was god's will to make things the way they are, and there is a good purpose for
everything. All that remains to be said about innocence is to enjoy it while it lasts.

1. The author believes that the loss of innocence in adulthood should be______.
A. avoided
B. criticized
C. accepted
D. encouraged

2. Lifelong innocence would be beneficial to society in that__________.
A. proper education would be provided
B. there would be no racial discrimination
C. there would be more happy families
D. people would realize their childhood dreams

3. According to the author, people with innocence can hurt the economy with their lack of____ .
A. motivational will
B. mental ability
C. adventurous ambitions
D. needed goods

During my ninth-grade year, I suffered from anorexia nervosa: it was not enough to be thin. I had to be
the thinnest. Now, however, fully recovered, I can reflect (反思) back and realize that my wishes were more
complex (复杂) than fitting into size five pants. Many of my subconscious (意识) emotions were related to
my relationship with my father. As I was growing up,his work always came first. Sometimes I would not
see him for up to two weeks. Not only did he devote his whole self to his work, but he expected me to do
the same ("You cannot get anywhere unless You go to the best universities"). Though, consciously, I never
felt pressure to please him, I began dieting after the first time he told me I looked fat.
At the time, all I knew was that I had to be skinny-skinnier than anyone else. Every month my father went
to Europe for a week or so and on the days he left, sorrow and emptiness consumed (折磨) me: Daddy was
leaving. Then, I tuned to focus on a mysterious weakness-a helpless childlike emotion that came from starving.
I liked to know that I needed to be taken care of; maybe Daddy would take care of me.
Now two years later and thirty-eight pounds heavier, I have come to realize that I cannot change my
father's inability to express his feelings. Instead, I must accept myself. I know that I am a valuable person
who struggle to achieve and accomplish. But I cannot struggle only for others. By starving, I attempted to
gain pride in myself by getting my father's approval (赞许) or acknowledgement of my value as a person.
But the primary approval must come from me, and I feel safe now that I can live with that knowledge safely
locked in my mind.

Among rich countries, people in the United States work the longest hours. They work much longer than
people in Europe. This difference is quite surprising because productivity per hour worked is the same in the
United States as it is in France, Spain and Germany, and it is growing at a similar speed.
In most countries and at most times in history, as people have become richer they have chosen to work
less. In other words they have decided to"spend" a part of their extra income on a fuller personal life. Over
the last fifty years Europeans have continued this pattern, and hours of work have fallen sharply. But not in
the United States. We do not fully know why this is. One reason may be greatly lower taxes in America,
which increase the rewards to work. Another may be more satisfying work, or less satisfying personal lives.
Longer hours does of course increase the GDP. So the United States has produced more per worker than,
say, France. The United States also has more of its people at work, while in France many more mothers and
older workers have decided to stay at home. The overall result is that American GDP per head is 40% higher
than in France, even though productivity per hour worked is the same.
It is not clear which of the two situations is better. As we have seen, work has to be compared with other
values like family life, which often get lost in its interest. It is too early to explain the different trends (趋势)
in happiness over time in different countries. But it is a disappointing idea that in the United States happiness
has made no progress since 1975, while it has risen in Europe. Could this have anything to do with trends in
the work-life balance?
1. From the text we know that author ____.

A. says nothing certain about which pattern is better
B. prefers shorter working hours to longer ones
C. believes that longer working hours is better
D. thinks neither of the patterns is good

2. In the last paragraph, the underlined word "which" refers to ____.
A. family life
B. situations
C. other values
D. trends
3. What message can we get from the text?
A. People all over the world choose to work less when they are richer.
B. Americans are happier than Europeans.
C. The GDP of Europe is higher than that of America.
D. Two possible reasons are given for working longer hours in the US.
4. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. Staying at Home
B. Work and Happiness
C. Work and GDP
D. Americans and Europeans

Like most big projects, learning to manage your mother well is what you should do. Here are what I
believe the best steps towards a better relationship with her. They are not necessarily surprising or
revolutionary, but they have worked for many people. Try them.
Remember your mother's age. As children, we often do not think of our mother as having an age.
Even when we become conscious of her as an individual, age does not change our view; she is still our
mother. Knowing our mother's age, not just in numbers of years but in terms of her psychological and
physical state, often helps us to understand her better.
Listen to your mother. I have found that sometimes the things my mother told me long ago are
remarkably useful. If your mother knows that you respect her point of view, even if you do not share it,
it will help her feel close to you.
Remember that your mother has a past. A key step in managing our relationship with our mother is to
find out about her early life.In learning about our mother's past, we know that it can encourage us to think
about her whole life.
Ask your mother about your childhood history. My grandparents died when I was young. If you are
fortunate enough to have living family, think of your life as a jigsaw puzzle and ask as many questions as
you can to put the picture together. Understanding your roots and your childhood can help you know
more clearly who you are, as part of a family which you share with your mother.
Remember that managing your mother is really about managing yourself. Taking any measure to
managing our mother is the issue of how we manage ourselves. No matter how difficult we find her, it is
important to remember that it is not her behavior itself that is causing us discomfort, but the way we feel
about her behavior. We should follow the way of her life. At the heart of managing your mother is being
able to accept your flawed self. Only then are you able to accept your mother-with all her failings.

1.What does the underlined phrase "a jigsaw puzzle" mean?
A. 拼图玩具
B. 浏览迷宫
C. 填充字谜
D. 游戏人生

2.Which of the following is implied but not stated in the passage?
A.You will have a better relationship with your mother if you respect her opinion.
B. Knowing your mother's age is a useful piece of advice.
C. The key measure of managing our mother is how we manage ourselves.
D. It is unreasonable to expect our mother to change totally from the way she was brought up.

3. The main purpose of writing the text is _______.
A. to give information about how you think of your mother
B. to improve the relationship with your mother
C. to keep a sense of humor about your mother all day long
D. to accept your mother-----with all her failings

Beginning college is exciting: new ideas to explore, new challenges to be met and many decisions to be made. Your future begins here.
However, you will find college life is different from your previous school environment. Many of us can
be easily overwhelmed by the details of running a wellbalanced life. While some of us may have the
knowhow,I guess there are more of us who can benefit from learning about the experiences of others who have walked the college halls before you.
The following you may find of use about life on campus.
●Plan well. There are so many new things to do at a new college or university. Give yourself time to
make new friends and become familiar with the campus, but don't forget why you are there. Give some time for social activities and manage your time wisely.
●If you don't have a "system" for planning your time now (like a day timer,a computer date book),get
one. Most of all, don't depend on your memory.
●Don't miss the guidelines. The restrictions, rules and regulations of all kinds can usually be found in
your student's handbook. Consider them wellbalanced food for thought. What dates are important? What pieces of paper need to be handed in? What can/ can't you do in your student residence(住处)? Who has the right for what? What do you need to complete to graduate?
●Write the word "STUDY" on the walls of our bedroom and bathroom, and maybe it will help to write
it on a piece of paper and stick it on the telephone,TV and the kitchen table. Consider this-you are paying
thousands of dollars for your courses. You pay every time you have to repeat or replace a course.
●Build your identity. This is the time for you to decide what to do and what not to do. Take as much
time as you need to explore new ideas. Do not be afraid of the beyond. This is learning to make good
choices.
1. What is the main purpose of the passage?

A. A sense of humour is not an inbom ability.
B. A sense of humour can be developed in our life.
C. A sense of humour helps us from several aspects.
D. A sense of humour means more than telling jokes.
E. A sense of humour can be expressed in many ways.
F. A sense of humour helps people to better enjoy life.

  1.__________
As awareness of the benefits of humour increases, most of us want to get all the laughs we can. It
seems that almost every day there is another new discovery about the power of humour to help us
physically , mentally , emotionally , and spiritually. Every system of the body responds to laughter in
some important or positive way.
  2.___________
Many people mistakenly believe that we are born with a sense of humour. They think that when it
comes to a sense of humour, " either you have got it or you don't. " This is false !  What is true,
however,is that the ability to laugh and smile is actually something we. are born with. For example,
we laugh when we are tickled under the arm , even without thinking about how to react.
3.__________
The parts of the brain and central nervous system that control laughing and smiling are mature at
birth in human infants , but that is not the same thing as having a sense of humour. ( After all, when
a baby laughs in his small bed we don't rush over and say, " That kid has a great sense of humour! " )
Your sense of humour is something you can develop over a lifetime. Don't be nervous before others
and try to laugh at yourself-then you will make them laugh too.
4.___________
Humour includes a lot more than laughing and joke telling. Many people worry needlessly that they

. one of the best definitions (定义) of a sense of humour is "the ability to see the nonserious element in
a situation. "
5.__________
There may be a thousand different ways to express your sense of humour, but joke telling is only one
of those ways. As more is discovered about how humour benefits  our life , more  people  will  be able
to see and enjoy the humour when they are in a difficult situation. Life  depends on air , food and water
, but it is made easier to live with a good sense of humour.
