I'm not much of a gardener. I love having beautiful flowers-but I don't have a good track record when it comes to making them grow.

A few months after our son left for the Middle East, my friend gifted me a box of tulip bulbs She explained that these bulbs were put into the ground in the fall and lay sleeping all winter. They had all the nutrients they needed inside the bulb and would come out in the spring. 'When you see the leaves of the tiny flowers pushing toward the sun, you'll know that it's almost time for your son to come home. They'll give you what you need most.' She walked me through the process of planting them. I thanked her — trying to show my gratitude for her gift.

It was a long winter — cold and dark. I endured both the weather and the loneliness and fear I felt with my son away. Dead leaves, frost and finally a heavy snow covered the area where I'd planted those flowers, and I soon forgot they were there.

Finally the weather began to warm. One day, as I walked down my front steps, I noticed an area of green. I bent down to inspect the situation more clearly and saw that those tulips had begun to grow, their tiny leaves forcing their way to the sun.

Day after day I noted the flowers' progress. And day after day, the time approached when my son would finally be home. Now with spring just around the corner, nothing could keep either of us from marching toward the light. Almost all of those bulbs bloomed. And with each brightly colored flower, I marked off one day closer to getting to hold my son in my arms again.

I'm not much of a gardener. I love having beautiful flowers-but I don't have a good track record when it comes to making them grow.(我不是个好园丁,我喜欢漂亮的花,但我在种植方面没有良好的记录)可知,作者虽然喜欢花,但不擅长种花。B. She is not good at growing flowers.

It was a long winter — cold and dark …Dead leaves, frost and finally a heavy snow covered the area where I'd planted those flowers, and I soon forgot they were there. D. She had no hope for beautiful flowers indeed.

Day after day I noted the flowers' progress. And day after day, the time approached when my son would finally be home. 一天又一天我的儿子终于要回家了)And with each brightly colored flower, I marked off one day closer to getting to hold my son in my arms again. A. A physical representation of the hope.

She explained that these bulbs were put into the ground in the fall and lay sleeping all winter. They had all the nutrients they needed inside the bulb and would come out in the spring. 'When you see the leaves of the tiny flowers pushing toward the sun, you'll know that it's almost time for your son to come home. B. Planting hope in winter.

With its sky-high scores in friendliness and fun, adventure in Spain is always as close as the nearest street. I will never forget the darkness, the pain and strong desire to die.

November arrived grey and busy, and going into an even more stressful. December, I was filled with anxious thoughts.

A visit to my father’s grave is often a good chance to cry and when I leave I feel a little more at peace. But this time was different. I drove home and every night for the rest of that week, I cried.

On Saturday, I watched a TV program teaching baking, and then I started to learn. By the end of the weekend, I had a dining room table covered with sweet treats. I packaged them up in tins, attached a label to each of them with “winter love” on it, and dropped them off on a few of my neighbors’ porches (门廊) before work. It shocked me how much it lightened my mood, seeing a small package lost on a porch.

The thanks I received later from the neighbors made me light up. It felt so good, and it distracted me from my dark thoughts.

By January I had developed a routine: on Sunday I’d bake cookies and package them up, and on Monday I'd deliver them. Every week I added a few different people to my delivery route, baked a few different kinds of cookies.

Somewhere along the way things started showing up on my doorstep a homemade cup, a pair of socks with tiny cookies and even a gift certificate from the local bookstore. Every single one melted my heart. But what I really appreciated was how people began to share their own stories of mental health with me. There is no greater honor than to be trusted with another’s life. I was overwhelmed by the love and care of my community. It humbled me that something so simple had created such incredible kindness. It reminded me that there was good in me, in my neighbors, in the world.

I was shifting into a new season of light, while letting go of a season of darkness. What had begun as an attempt to bring light into my own darkness had been transformed into a story more beautiful than I could have ever dreamed. It reminded me that there is beauty in being kind. That life is tough, but there is a quiet strength in knowing you are not alone.

1After she started sharing cookies with neighbors, the author_________.

A.gained trust and care from them

B.added other things to her delivery list

C.felt her life was no longer busy or stressful

D.found some of them had more mental problems than her

A.Positive.B.Cautious.C.Doubtful.D.Concerned.

A.To express gratitude to caring neighbors.

B.To speak of the benefits of baking cookies at home.

C.To share how being kind helped her regain hope.

D.To show the importance of a closely connected community.

The cracked step four years ago was the start of it. That day, I awoke tired—the children were tiny and needing so much—and I had a golden afternoon of rest ahead, my mother stepping in to allow me to catch up on my sleep. I dropped them off and drove home—the sun shining and my bed signaling. As I was about to enter the house, I caught sight of a deep crack beneath my feet.

Without thinking, I turned around, walked back to the car and drove to a DIY store. Four hours later, I had all the tools, mixed my own cement, filled in the crack and repaired the foundation. Perfect. As I stood up to take a photo of my handiwork, I realized that I was trembling. I’d forgotten my shot at a nice long nap, and my children were already on their way home. That sleep... that promise to self was broken, because I had focused, instead, on the crack in the step.

Suddenly, everything started to hurt. My head, my throat, my back. I couldn’t stop shaking. What earned then is that when we break the promises we make to our bodies they will not be silenced. This is when we overwork and overthink to the point of breaking down. Ironically (讽刺地), for many of us, it is only when we have no choice— when we fall ill—that we learn to listen. For me, when that crack ended in a hospital stay which sent me to bed for two unmoving weeks when my body worked to clear two different infections, the lesson is ever present. I did it to myself—a whole twisted spin on DIY.

Sadly it took another two ridiculous DIY projects to finally get through. The cracks will never be fully filled. Focus, then, on your own inner core, the feeding of light, fire and strength.

1What made the author so sleepy in the first place?

A.Taking care of the kids.B.Asking her mother for help.

C.Driving to her mother’s houseD.Dealing with DIY projects.

2How did the author feel as soon as she finished her repair work?

A.RegretfulB.Upset

C.ProudD.Thankful

3What can be implied from Paragraph 3?

A.Our health is ignored deliberately.

B.Our body will respond to what we do.

C.The author took her mother’s advice.

D.The author was infected before the DIY.

4What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?

A.To describe an unfortunate event.

B.To show the danger of DIY.

C.To stress the importance of sleep.

D.To encourage focusing on oneself.
