A present for my parents

The new year is coming and I want to give my parents a present. That is a VIP card of a health club. My father works hard as a teacher, spending most of his time working with great efforts at school. My mother loves reading and often dives into piles of books. But she seldom does exercise.

As I grow up, they are getting older. Both of them should exercise more but neither is doing enough. With the health club membership, I hope that they will find time to do more exercise.

I want to express my love and thanks to them by giving them the present. I think they will relax in the health club and make more friends. At the same time, I hope they will enjoy better health.

Some inventions are so useful, but seem so simple, that we wonder why no one thought of them long ago.

Post-it Notes were invented about twenty years ago by Art Fry, a scientist at 3M Company. The idea for the product came from an awful experience he often had while singing in his church choir. Fry used pieces of paper as bookmarks to mark the places in his book of songs, but these bookmarks were always falling out. Around that time, Fry heard about a new adhesive (粘合剂) that a colleague, Dr. Spence Silver, had created. This adhesive was special because it was strong enough to hold papers together, but not strong enough to tear the paper when it was removed.

A short time later, Fry realized that his new invention had even more uses than being a great bookmark. He came to this realization when he wrote a note on one of his new “bookmarks” and attached it to a report he was going to give to a colleague. Soon, co-workers were asking Fry for more of his invention so that they could use the new type of notes themselves.

Fry and some other people at 3M believed so much in the new product that they asked the company to give away thousands of the “sticky pieces of paper” for trial use. When some salespeople at 3M went to offices and showed workers just how helpful the new type of notes could be, they immediately received many orders. As more and more people discovered how useful Post-it Notes could be, the product took off.

1.How did Dr. Spence help Art Fry?

A. He created the Post-it Notes.

B. He offered the new adhesive to Art.

Last week the American Medical Association voted, for the first time, to declare obesity(肥胖) a disease. How should the rest of us respond? When we meet obese people, should we cast them a knowing glance of concern and ask how they are doing? Should we send flowers and “get well soon” cards to obese family members and friends?

Should the U.S. declare war on obesity, as we once did on cancer?

If obesity truly is a disease, then over 78 million adults and 12 million children in America just got classified as sick. Yet many sensible people know that declaring obesity a disease is a mistake. Simply put, obesity is not a disease. To be sure, it is a risk factor for some diseases.

Yet everyone who is obese does not get sick, and many normal-weight people do not stay healthy. I have known slim people who took good care of themselves throughout their lives yet fell ill and died young. Others who exhibited no particular interest in their health and did not watch their weight lived to an old age. In most cases, we simply cannot tell from a person’s weight what lies ahead for them in life. Consider Winston Churchill. Though average in height, Churchill weighed up to 250 pounds. He smoked cigars and drank relatively heavily. He did not work out. Yet he became perhaps the most important statesmen of the 20th century and one of the greatest politicians in history. He lived to age 90.

Is obesity bad for people? For some, especially patients who are extremely overweight, the answer is almost certainly yes. Would many overweight people benefit from exercising more and eating less? Again, the answer is likely yes. But this does not make obesity a disease. Many people are not harmed by carrying extra pounds, some may actually benefit from it. For these reasons, we should be careful before labeling obese people diseased.

1.What can we learn from the third paragraph ?

A. Over 90 million Americans are more or less overweight.

B. People with good sense would agree with the declaration.

C. More Americans suffer from obesity than any other diseases.

D. Obesity is the leading cause of most deadly diseases.

2.By mentioning Winston Churchill, the author wants to ________.

A. tell us slim people are more likely to die young

B. show how successful an overweight person can be

C. prove overweight people are not necessarily unhealthy

D. encourage people not to care much about their way of living

3.What is the author’s attitude towards the American Medical Association’s declaration on obesity?

A. Favorable B. Uncaring

C. Disapproving D. Friendly

4.Where can we probably find the text?

A. A government report

B. A popular science magazine

C. A website about losing weight

D. A book about famous people
