Chinese students always complain that they’re under great pressure and don’t get enough sleep. But they may be surprised to learn that they’re much luckier than their peers (同龄人) in South Korea and Japan, according to a recently published report, conducted by Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences on the physical and mental health of senior high school students in the three Asian countries.

Among nearly 6,000 high school students in the three countries, Chinese students are the tallest but poorest in physical fitness. Chinese students asked for sick leave more than students in other countries. About 72 percent of Korean students never asked for sick and injury leave during high school, compared to 53 percent for Japanese students and 45 percent for Chinese students.

As the survey presents, Japanese and South Korean students suffer more pressure. Statistics show 16 percent of students in China said they experienced mental pressure often over the past year, while the numbers in Japan and South Korea were 33 percent and 47 percent respectively. Their worries come from “study”, “friendships” and “relationship with their parents”. To go with stress, 57.9 percent of Korean students sleep the least, less than six hours a day, compared with 46.6 percent of Japanese students and 30 percent of Chinese students.

More Chinese students were satisfied with their physical appearance. In measures of self?worth, such as “I think I am valuable” and “I can complete many things”, “I won’t give up to failure”, Chinese students showed greater self?confidence than students in Japan and South Korea and they are the happiest among the three.

China’s new buzzword, tuhao, may be in nextyear’s Oxford English Dictionary.

“If its influence continues, it is very likely to appear on our updated list of words, ”said Julie Kleeman, project manager with the editing team.

In Chinese, tu means uncouth and hao means rich. It has traditionally been referred to rich people who throw their weight around in China’s rural areas. In recent years, people borrowed the term to describe those who spend money in an irrational(没道理的)manner. The word gained credence in September with the launch of Apple’s new gold-colored iPhone, an item loved by China’s rich people. The color became known as “tuhao gold. ”The word is now often used by the online community to refer topeople who have the cash but lack the class to go with it.

Kleeman also mentioned two other Chinese words—dama and hukou—which may also be taken in the dictionary. Hukou means household registration in Chinese and has been widely used.

Dama, meaning middle-aged women, was first used in the Western media by the Wall Street Journal in May when thousands of Chinese women were buying up record number of gold. They were the driving force in the global gold market between April and June when the gold prices had slumped(下跌).

“We have nearly 120 Chinese-linked words now in Oxford English Dictionary, ”she said. Some of them are: Guanxi, literally meaning“connection”, is the system of social networks and influential relationships which facilitate business and other dealings. Taikonaut is a mix of taikong, meaning outer space, and astronaut.

The new words will be first uploaded on the official website before the dictionaries arrive. The online version is also renewed every three months. “It at least broke our old rules. It used to take 10 years to include a new word but now we keep the pace with the era, ”according to John Simpson.

1.What does “Tuhao” mean now?

A. The rich who like iPhone made of gold.

B. The people who have power in the countryside.

A new research of 8,000 young people in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior shows that although love can make adults live healthily and happily, it is a bad thing for young people. Puppy love (早恋) may bring stress for young people and can lead to depression . The study shows that girls become more depressed than boys, and younger girls are the worst of all.

The possible reason for the connection between love and higher risk of depression for girls is “loss of self”. According to the study, even though boys would say “lose themselves in a romantic relationship”, this “loss of self” is much more likely to lead to depression when it happens to girls. Young girls who have romantic relationships usually like hiding their feelings and opinions. They won’t tell that to their parents.

Dr Marian Kaufman, an expert on young people problems, says 15% to 20% young people will have depression during their growing. Trying romance often causes the depression. She advises kids not to jump into romance too early. During growing up, it is important for young people to build strong friendships and a strong sense of self. She also suggests the parents should encourage their kids to keep close to their friends, attend more interesting school activities and spend enough time with family.

Parents should watch for signs of depression—eating or mood changes —and if they see signs from their daughters or sons, they need to give help. The good news is that the connection between romance and depression seems to become weak with age. Love will always make us feel young, but only maturity gives us a chance to avoid its bad side effects.

1. Which of the following is more likely to have depression?

A. Young girls who always hide their feelings and opinions.

B. Careless parents whose children are deep in love.

C. Young people who have a strong sense of selfishness.

D. Young boys whose parents watch for their behavior.

2. What can be inferred from the passage?

A. Early love makes young people keep close to their friends and parents.

B. Parents should help their children to be aware of the signs of depression.

C. Lacking love can lead young people to grow up more quickly.

D. The older a woman is,the less likely she seems to lose herself in romance.

3.What’s the author’s attitude towards puppy love?

A. Scared B. Disapproving.

C. Confused D. Disinterested.

4.What’s the main idea of the passage?

A. .Romance is a two edged sword for adults.

B. .Romance is good for young people.

C. Parents should forbid their children’s love

D. Puppy love may bring young people depression

They’re putting lots of small, high-tech machines under the pyramid to try to unlock some of its secrets. For thousands of years, people have tried to uncover the secrets of the pyramids.
