    　　Ten years ago, Pierre Omidyar, a software engineer working in California's Silicon Valley, began thinking about how to use the internet for a trading system in which buyers and sellers could establish a genuine market price．Over a long holiday weekend he wrote the computer code．At first, a trickle of users arrived at his website－including his girlfriend, who traded PEZ candy dispensers．By the end of 1995, several thousand auctions had been completed and interest in eBay was growing．And it grew and grew．From this modest beginning, eBay has become a global giant, with around 150m registered users worldwide who are set to buy and sell goods worth more than $40 billion this year．

    　　The remarkable tale of eBay's growth points to some important lessons for any business trying to operate online－and today that includes, one way or another, most firms．The commercial opportunities presented by an expanding global web seem almost limitless．But the pace of change is rapid, and so is the ferocity(激烈)of competition．To succeed, firms need agility(灵活), an open mind and the ability to reinvent themselves repeatedly．Most of all, they need to listen carefully to their customers, paying close attention to what they do and don't want．

    　　Such qualities, of course, would be valuable in any kind of business．Yet for online firms they are not a luxury, but necessary for mere survival．This is true for a variety of reasons．The internet is not only growing, but changing rapidly－which, in turn, changes the rules of the game for any business relying on it．The barriers to entry are still low compared with those for most offline businesses, which means that just keeping track of your existing rivals is not enough．These may not represent the greatest competitive threat tomorrow or the next day．That could come from a number of directions－a firm in a different type of online business; one that does not yet exist; or even from one of your own customers．On top of all this, the behavior of many consumers is constantly changing as well, as individuals discover new ways to shop and interact with each other via the web．

    　　All these factors make the internet a dangerous place to do business, as well as one full of promise．eBay's history demonstrates both of those things．It is probably safe to say full of promise．eBay could have existed without the internet－or could have grown so fast．Even though there have been signs of the firm's blistering(快速的)pace slowing a bit in America, its most “mature” market. there remain vast opportunities overseas, particularly, some argue, in China．Meg Whitman, eBay's chief executive, believes the company is still only at the beginning of what it could achieve．

    Half of all bosses say a lack of sleep makes them irritable (易怒的) and prone to(有……倾向的) shout at their staff, a study said.

    One in five managers also said being kept awake at night meant they were more likely to make mistakes, the Mori poll of 1,006 people revealed(显示).

    Some 48% of people aged 35 to 44 said they did not get enough sleep compared to a national average 39%.

    Among that age group, people with young children and managerial (管理的) jobs were most likely to suffer. 

    The report, commissioned (委托) by the think tank De??mos and Ikea, said the issue of sleep had been forgotten in the work / life balance debate.

    Report author Charles Leadbeater said, "On any working day, a quarter of all managers in Britain are likely to be in a bad mood because they have not slept well. "

    "These sleep-deprived and shouty managers with a tend??ency to make mistakes are responsible for millions of British workers. It’s hardly a recipe for good management. "

    And Mr. Leadbeater called on the government and em??ployers to take action.

    A small loss of sleep is likely to have a big impact on people who lead stressful lives.

    "Stressed out parents are already not sleeping enough. They are the people most likely to have their sleep disrupted and they are least able to recover."  

    Apart from children keeping their parents awake, worrying about work is the biggest cause of wakefulness at night among managers.

    Women are five times more likely than men to lose sleep because their partners snore (打呼噜).

    The report predicted that there was likely to be a growing market of　sleep-deprived people, with an increase in "public napping".

    Opportunities to take a nap at work are also likely to in??crease, and the report recommended that employers take their responsibility for ensuring employees were well slept more se??riously.

    Peter Jelkeby, marketing manager at Ikea, said the re??search confirmed suspicions Britons were not getting enough sleep.  

    And he added: "This is having a detrimental effect on our society as a whole. "

         Wearing ties was originally the mark of Britain's most powerful classes, which made the tie itself a symbol
    of power and respect. And that led it to be adopted by a much larger tribe-the business tribe.
         You cannot wear a tie if you work with machinery. So wearing a tie became a sign that you were a man
    who used your brain to make a living,rather than your hands. It showed you were serious. It showed you were

         This is how millions of people came to be wearing ties across the world. They are part of the uniform of
    business.
         "Ties offer a point of indifference," says John Milne, head of the British Guide of Tie Makers, "They give
    a chance to say something about their own personality."
         So if you happen to meet a man with a very brightly colored tie, there is a good chance that he is the office
    joker. There is also a good chance that he will be wearing brightly colored socks.
         Is there a future for ties? The signs are not promising. Tie wearing seems to be rare among the new bread
    of entrepreneurs (创业者) in the Internet and new technology industries. Many political leaders, including
    former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, now go without ties. This shows they are men of the people-but not
    the people wearing ties.
         Up until around 1960, it was common for men across the western world to wear hats as part of their
