As kids, my friends and I spent a lot of time out in the woods. “The woods” was our part-time address, destination, purpose, and excuse. If I went to a friends house and found him not at home, his mother might say, “Oh, he’s out in the woods, ” with a tone(语气) of airy acceptance. It is similar to the tone people sometimes use nowadays to tell me that someone I’m looking for is on the golf course or at the gym, or even “away from his desk.” For us ten-year-olds, “being out in the woods” was just an excuse to do whatever we feel like for a while.
We sometimes told ourselves that what we were doing in the woods was exploring(探索). Exploring was a more popular idea back then than it is today. History seemed to be mostly about explorers. Our explorations, though, seemed to have less system than the historic kind: something usually came up along the way. Say we stayed in the woods, throwing rocks, shooting frogs, picking blackberries, digging in what we were briefly persuaded was an Indian burial mound.
Often we got “lost” and had to climb a tree to find out where we were. If you read a story in which someone does that successfully, be skeptical: the topmost branches are usually too skinny to hold weight, and we could never climb high enough to see anything except other trees. There were four or five trees that we visited regularly—tall beeches, easy to climb and comfortable to sit in.
It was in a tree, too, that our days of fooling around in the woods came to an end. By then some of us had reached seventh grade and had begun the rough ride of adolescence(青春期). In March, the month when we usually took to the woods again after winter, two friends and I set out to go exploring. We climbed a tree, and all of a sudden it occurred to all three of us at the same time that we really were rather big to be up in a tree. Soon there would be the spring dances on Friday evenings in the high school cafeteria.

The word “death” is a word many Chinese friends tell me I should not say aloud. They advise me to avoid the word because only speaking of it may bring ill fortune. I deeply believe, however, that to know how to live, we must also know how to die. The problem is how we talk about death.
Like everyone in Taiwan this week, I have had “Tomb Sweeping Day”. I am proud to be part of a people whose culture sends millions of families to cemeteries on this special day to share memories and endless love.
Today, eight days after the death of Pope John Paul II, millions of people of all backgrounds still grieve(悲痛) his passing away. He was a deeply human person who knew how to laugh and show emotions, a writer with a gift for words a leader who appealed to us by the sheer light of his love for life.
On the same day and only hours before the Holy Father left us, a friend of mine named Veronica McBride died of cancer in a small Wisconsin city. My friend Veronica was 52 years old. She was an attractive, humorous young woman who, as the saying goes, “never married”. She published several humor books with her mother, Mary McBride. She enjoyed traveling, and for years sent Christmas card photos of herself standing beside monuments or odd animals. She fought cancer for five years. She joked about her treatment keeping her pretty because it kept her thin, and told me she didn’t mind losing her hair because of chemo therapy. “I get to wear nice wigs!”
The last time I saw Veronica was when I visited her family on a sunny day in August in 2003. When she burst into the front door later and saw me in the living room, she ignored me completely in her hurry to hug her newest baby nephew, leaving me shaking my head in laughter at her.
As we look to the significance of the Holy Father and his life, surely we must also keep our eyes open to see the wonder and goodness in ordinary people who show us how to live and how to die.
小题1:The purpose of the article is ___________.
A.to memorize his friend Veronica
B.to talk about the significance of life and death
C.to teach us how to face life and death
D.to compare his friend and the Holy Father Pope John Paul II
小题2:The underlined phrase “chemo therapy” in Paragraph 4 probably means ______.
A.a medical treatmentB.a kind of cancer
C.a kind of medicineD.the newest machine
小题3:Why does the writer compare the Holly Father with his friend?
A.Because they are both the persons he admires.
B.Because they have a lot in common.
C.Because he wants to show that ordinary people can be great as well.
D.Because he wants to memorize them both.
小题4:From the phrase “burst into”, we can see that Veronica is ____________.
A.braveB.sportiveC.humorousD.energetic

My 10-year-old Donna said, “Mom, I made a new friend at school today. Can she come over tomorrow?” Donna was a shy girl and I wanted her to make some friends to bring her out of her shell.
“Sure, honey, that sounds great.” I said, thinking back to my own best friend, Lillian. We lived across the street from each other in Washington Heights, New York. We met at the age of 10, too. Like my daughter, I was shy, but Lillian drew me out. She was one of the friendliest people in school, with shiny black hair and a mile-wide smile.
In senior high school, Lillian went on a trip to Florida. This was the first time we had to be away from each other for a few days. “I’ll be back soon.” she told me. But three days later, Lillian’s sister told me that she had fallen into a river and hadn’t come out any more. Soon, my family moved to New Jersey. Whenever I thought of her, tears came into my eyes.
The next day Donna brought her new friend home. “Hi, Mrs. Loggia.” the little girl said. Her hair was so shiny and black and she shot me a big smile. “My name is Laura.”
My daughter’s new friend was so much like Lillian. I was still puzzled (迷惑) when Laura’s mom came to pick her up later that afternoon. Honesty,my mum always used to tell me,is the best policy.Of course, this didn’t include her when she told me that if I didn’t eat all my vegetables Father Christmas would find out and wouldn’t give me any presents.
But when it comes to medicine.I had assumed it was important to always be honest with my patients. After all,the doctor-patient relationship is based on trust, and therefore honesty is essential.Or so I thought.
I had just started working in geriatrics(老年病科).Mr. McMahon was brought in when his belly was found very swollen.I took a medical history from his daughter who’d accompanied him in the ambulance. She’d been his main carer for years.I stood looking at him as she gave a detailed history.“Has he lost any weight recently?”I asked.“Well,it’s funny you should mention that, but yes.”she said slowly. There was silence for a few moments.“Why? What are you worried about?”she asked.I hesitated. She was obviously very involved in his care and it was only fair that I told her the truth.“Well.we need to prove it’s not cancer.”I said and talked briefly about some of the tests I was going to order.
Half an hour later, a nurse called me:“Mr. McMahon’s daughter broke down--she said you told her he had cancer.”My heart sank.By the time I arrived at the ward,my consultant was already there, explaining that we still had to run lots of tests and that it was by no means confirmed that he had cancer.I stood silently at the end of the bed.My consultant was obviously angry with me and as we left Mr. McMahon, she turned to me.“Why on earth did you do that?”she asked in disbelief.I looked at her and bit my lip.“She asked me what I was worried about and I told her.”I said, hanging my head.“And give her more to worry about?”replied my consultant.“You don’t say the word‘cancer’until it’s confirmed.Even if you suspect it,think very carefully before you tell people.”
As it turned out, it wasn’t cancer. But I did learn that when someone is stressed and worried about their loved one they’re sometimes selective in what they hear and as a doctor it’s important to be mindful of this.In being truthful,I’d made the situation worse.

Five steps to take if your child is being bullied
51  The worst thing you can do is ignore it. Too often parents feel children and teens need to “work things out” on their own. If the problem is ignored, your child’s self-esteem will become unhealthy, he will be hurt mentally or physically, and he could become a bully himself.
Here are five steps you can take if your child is having problems with a bully:
52  This is an important first step and will help your child trust that you are able to help him with his problem. Accept what he has to say at face value by using your active listening skills.
Let your child know that he is not alone.   53  Reassure your child that he is not the problem. Nothing he did caused the bully to go after him.
If your child is being threatened in a physical or illegal way at school, report the problem. Your child may not want you to do this, or the school may not take it seriously, but violence cannot be tolerated.   54  You will need to model assertive (果断的) behavior by alerting those in charge where the bullying is taking place.
Teach your child assertive behavior and how to ignore routine teasing. Let them know it is okay to say “No.” sometimes even friends bully, so letting your child know they can be true to their own feelings and say “No” can go a long way.
55  Giving up possessions or giving in to a bully in anyway encourages the bully to continue. Identify ways for your child to respond to a bully---showing assertive but not aggressive behavior---and role-play them.
A.Believe what your child tells you.
B.Encourage your child not to give in to a bully.
C.Praise your child for being brave enough to talk about it.
D.Bullying is a terrible situation for a child to have to cope with.
E. If you choose not to do anything, that is what you’re teaching your child.
F. Most children have to deal with some type of bullying behavior at one time or another.
G. If your child comes to you because a bully is bothering him, you need to pay close attention to the problem.
