What is a fair wage? 1. These are some of the questions the United Nations International Labour Organisation(ILO) has recently investigated.
With a global population of over seven billion, is it actually possible to measure an average amount?_ 2._ Using the total wage bill from over seventy countries, they have multiplied the amounts by the number of earners in each country. The economists then tallied up the results and divided them by the total number across the world The result was a world average wage equivalent to $1,490 a month. _3._
This figure might seem very high because they calculated the amount using purchasing power parity dollars, which takes into account the fact that it is cheaper to live in some countries than others. _4._
Calculating an average sum like this might not be a completely fair representation, but these figures do help us to understand how the world is developing, both economically, in the quality of life people are experiencing and their standard of living.
But the result shows that the average wage is still relatively low and there remains a huge difference in levels of affluence around the world. _5._ Is this fair? For many, pay equality still seems very far out of reach.
A. The ILO has now tried to work out the sums.
B. The ILO used statistics from over 70 different countries
C. Why aren't more people in the world offered pay equality?
D. That is approximately $75 a day for a 20-day working month.
E. Some people live on just two dollars a day, while others are earning more than a million dollars a year.
F. When someone works for themselves, what are they called?
G. The data also did not include the huge number of people who appear in poverty statistics or who are self-employed.

One cold day in winter, my wife and I were walking back home from the grocery store as usual when we suddenly decided to walk into a coffee shop.
My wife ordered a coffee at the counter. Just then, I saw a young woman in her thirties helping with a rather weak Mexican woman into the shop. Maybe it was the gentleness of their difficult experiences or an unclear familiarity (熟悉) with the situation that drew my full attention. I immediately had a strong wish to do something for them. Unfortunately, before I could think of anything reasonable to say, they left the coffee shop without ordering anything!
When my wife returned, I told her about the two women and said, “I missed the chance to do something for them.” Strangely enough, though, they came back into the same coffee shop five minutes later. Unbelievable! “This is my chance,” I thought out loud as my wife shared some creative possibilities. The two women ordered, took their place card and left the counter.
After quickly finishing our coffee, we walked up to the counter and asked the smiling cashier (出纳员), “What is your most popular dessert (甜点)?” Chocolate Cake,” she answered. With a childlike feeling of happiness, my wife made an unusual order. “Can I buy a chocolate cake for the two women who were here just before us? But don’t tell them it is from us. Just give them this card,” she said while taking out a smile card. The cashier couldn’t believe it. “ Do you do this all the time?” she asked. “ Not all the time, but just whenever the heart calls for it,” I answered with a natural smile.
We, my wife and I, are people of middle income (收入). That night, we had planned to have our once-in-a-while dinner at a restaurant. But walking out of that coffee shop, both of us stood upright and said, “Let’s eat at home today.” It’s more filling (能填饱肚子的) to give a chocolate cake than to eat it.

How to get siblings to get along
One of the greatest gifts of parenthood is seeing your children form a relationship with each other that is independent of you. By giving them someone else to play with, you can free up some time for yourself. Here are four techniques you can use to help your children appreciate each other while they are young.
1. 1. The No. 1 thing parents can do to help their kids stay on good terms with each other is not to compare them with each other. Never say “Your sister never...” or “Why can’t you do what your brother does?” 2.
2. Stay out of the way. Try not to get too involved in your kinds’ arguments. Learning cooperation and problem-solving is an important skill in life. 3. And don’t blame the older one for not “knowing better”. That puts pressure on the older child and leads to unhappiness.
3. Activities and opportunities. Have your kids go to their siblings’ games and activities. 4. “My kids go to each other’s activities, and take part in activities together,” says Patricia Walters-Fischer, mother of two. Not only do her children go, but they also offer support, encouraging each other before a big game or performance and offering comfort when things don’t go well.
4. Vacations. Don’t ignore the value of a family vacation for bringing siblings together. When kids are away from their friends and forced to spend time together, they often enjoy each other. 5. In fact, a weekend camping trip offers some of the best opportunities for working together, having fun and experiencing something new.
A. Never shout at them.
B. Don’t compare.
C. It doesn’t need to be anything extremely great.
D. Get them involved in one another’s lives, so they can have a better appreciation of who their sibling is.
E. That only serves to fuel the competition.
F. They may need help solving a conflict, but try not to take sides.
G. Give them a project, and they will learn how to work together.

科目:高中英语 来源:2016-2017吉林长春十一中、白城一中高二上期中英语卷(解析版) 题型:阅读理解
To develop one’s taste in English, the most effective way is to read English books extensively. However, one may be at a loss to choose the appropriate books, especially as a beginner.I would like to share some of my experience.
My first English novel was Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, recommended by many English teachers and professors as an ideal book for English learners. But I had great difficulty in understanding the novel, let alone enjoying it. It’s not the vocabulary that troubled me,but rather the way Austen constructs sentences, and her way of thinking, which seemed too remote to me at that time. My fading enthusiasm was much recovered after reading Hemingway’s novel Farewell to Arms. I particularly liked his brief and lively style. So my first suggestion is,as a beginner, you’d better choose contemporary novels instead of classical ones.
However, reading novels is not the only way to improve your English. English essays can at once inform you, entertain you, and improve your taste in English. The best example is Bertrand Russell’s work. Its language is plain, yet you cannot help feeling the elegance and the unique sense of humor. His simple language enables his philosophy(哲理) within the reach of ordinary people. Here comes my second suggestion—essays are indispensable.
Never follow other’s opinions blindly, however famous or influential the person might be. As a saying goes, one man’s meat is another man’s poison. With that in mind,we are sure to find out our favorite writers through reading and develop our fine taste in English.
1.What made the author’s first English novel hard to understand?
A. Complex conversations.
B. Not knowing the social background.
C. The old-fashioned vocabulary.
D. Sentences and Austen’s thinking pattern.
2.Which can best replace the underlined word“ indispensable”?
A. necessary B. challenging
C. related D. inspired
3.What advice does the author give in the last paragraph?
A. Choose books that challenging us most.
B. Read books that are instructive.
C. Don’t be affected by other’s choices.
D. Compare books before buying.
4.What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage?
A. Give comments on literature works.
B. Tell beginners how to choose English books.
C. Encourage people to read more English books.
D. Recommend first-class books to English learners.
