    15．Apple a day may poison children
    Children who eat an apple or pear a day may be exceeding（超过） the pesticide（杀虫剂） safety limit because of remains on the fruit，according to research．
    Using data of the British Department of Environment on pesticides on fruit collected from supermarkets，scientists thought that each day some children would get a poisonous level of pesticides．
    The research，published on Sunday，says the government repeatedly claims that the levels of pesticide are safe because，instead of measuring individual apples，researchers buy 10，crush them and take an average reading to see if they are safe．This is the internationally agreed method of checking remains．
    But government figures show that the pesticide is not averagely spread across the batch（一批），and one or two apples could contain 90% or more of the pesticide in the batch．
    It used mathematical modeling to measure exposure（暴露） to pesticides for children aged between 18months and four years old．The pesticides involved can destroy children's hormones and some are suspected（怀疑） of causing cancer．
    The good news for British fruit growers is that samples grown in this country had lower residue level than imported fruit，so buying home-produced fruit will reduce the danger，said Emily Diamand，one of the Earth's senior food researchers and one of the authors of the report．

    19．It is common sense that children who walk or cycle to school have a lower risk of obesity than those by car．But driving your youngsters to the gates could also cause their academic work to suffer．
    Researchers found children who were driven to school，or who took public transport，had poorer concentration levels than those who took a more active route such as walking or cycling．
    The joint study by researchers at two Danish universities found the regular exercise could advance a student up to half a year in their studies．Children who were driven to school，or who took public transport，performed less well in a test measuring concentration levels，than those who had walked or cycled．
    The results surprised the researchers，as their hypothesis（假设） originally focused on the effects of eating breakfast and lunch on pupils'ability to concentrate．
    "The exercise one uses to transport oneself to school is reflected in the level of concentration one has about four hours later，"Niels Egelund，a co-author of the report said．"The results showed that having breakfast and lunch has an impact，but not very much compared to having exercise．"
    "As a third-grade pupil，if you exercise and bike to school，your ability to concentrate increases to the equivalent of someone half a year further in their studies，"he added．
    In the survey，taken by 19，527 pupils aged five to 19 years old，participants were asked about their exercise habits and were then given a basic test measuring their concentration．
    "Most people know the feeling of being refreshed after having exercised，but it is surprising that the effect lasts for so long，"Egelund said．
    Previous research from the university of Montreal has found that exercise helps our brains make better use of oxygen．It may also reduce mental fatigue（疲劳） and sharpen your thinking in between gym sessions．And last week Swedish researchers said they found that muscular boys will live longer than their weaker friends．
    And even if they are overweight by the time they get to adulthood，those with stronger muscles tend to live longer．

    13．A new study has found that African elephants appear to use darkness to avoid being seen or heard when raiding（搜索） farmland for food．The study Also showed that elephants carry out their food raids based on the appearance of the moon，or lunar cycle．Researchers believe the animals are doing this during the cover of darkness to avoid contact with human beings．
    A report on the study appeared in the African Journal of Ecology．Rachel Grant teaches animal behavior at Anglia Ruskin University in England．She says elephants are cathemeral，meaning they are active both day and night．But she says，their raids on crops almost always take place at night．This suggests that the animals go near villages when they sense that their huge bodies are more difficult to see
    Ms．Grant added that an elephant's knowledge of the higher risk of being discovered on moonlit nights could explain its behavior during the lunar cycle．
    The study was carried out in and around Mikumi National Park in Tanzania．The park has one of the largest populations of wild elephants in Africa．It is about 300kilometers west of Dar es Salaam．
    The researchers chose five villages near the wildlife area and counted how many times elephants raided crops． They found that few of elephant"raid nights"took place during a full moon．The amount of crop damage．also fell considerably during such periods．
    Rachel Grant says some elephants have what she calls"an internally  arising biological rhythm（ 生物节律）"or they may be basing their decision-making on local conditions．In her words，"Many animals change their behavior according to varying light levels and the realizing  risk of raiding foods．"She says this rhythm is likely to be a partly evolved，partly learned response．
