9.Education is not an end,but a means to an end.In other words,we do not educate children only for the purpose of educating them.Our purpose is to fit them for life.
In some modern countries it has for some time been fashionable to think that by free education for all-whether rich or poor,clever or stupid-one can solve all the problems of society and build a perfect nation.But we can already see that free education for all is not enough; we find in such countries a far larger number of people with university degrees refuse to do what they think to be"low"work,and,in fact,work with hands is thought to be dirty and shameful in such countries.But we have only to think a moment to understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer is far more important than that of a professor.We can live without education,but we die if we have no food.If no one cleaned our streets and took the rubbish away from our houses,we should get terrible diseases in our towns.
In fact,when we say that all of us must be educated to fit us for life,it means that we must be educated in such a way that,firstly,each of us can do whatever work suited to his brains and ability and,secondly,that we can realize that all jobs are necessary to society,and that is very bad to be ashamed of one's work.Only such a type of education can be considered valuable to society.

33.According to the passage,the purpose of education isD.
A.to build a perfect world
B.to choose a system of education
C.to let everyone receive education fit for him
D.to prepare children mainly for their future work
34.Which of the following is true according to the passage?C
A.It's hard for university graduates to find jobs.
B.No one would like to do work with hands.
C.Education is not enough to build a perfect nation.
D.University graduates are ashamed of their work.
35.In the writer's opinion,A.
A.all the social problems can't be solved by education
B.free education for all probably leads to a perfect world
C.free education won't help to solve social problems
D.education can settle all of the world's problems.

10.I used to joke that I spoke French like a 3-year-old.Until I met a French 3-year-old and couldn't keep the conversation.This was after a year of intense study,including at least two hours a day with self-instruction software and weekend classes,followed by two weeks of an immersion program at one of the top language schools in France.
My failure was in fact quite unremarkable.Despite advertising claims,learning a foreign language is a challenging task for any adult.In the end,though,it turns out that spending a year"not learning"French may have been the best things I could have done for my 57-year-old brain.
In the last few years.I was unable to hold a list of four grocery items in my mind.So to reassure myself that nothing was wrong,I took a cognitive assessment just before tackling French.The result wasanything but reassuring:I scored below average for my age group in nearly all of the categories, especially on the composite memory test and the visual memory test.
After a year of struggling with the language,I retook cognitive assessment,and the results shocked me.My scores had improved,placing me above average in 7of 10categories,and average in the other three.Studying a language had been like drinking from a mental fountain of youth.
What might explain such an improvement?Researchers at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Northwestern Uni versity noted that the cognitive tasks involved in language study-like working memory,inductive reasoning,sound discrimination and task switching-map closely related to the areas of the brain that are most associated with declines due to aging.
If my experience is any indication, you might be better off  by studying a language.Not only is that a far more useful and enjoyable activity than an abstract brain game,but as a reward for your efforts,you can treat yourself to a trip abroad.That's why I plan to spend the next year"not learning"Italian.

14.I am writing with reference to the article entitled"Everything's jut perfect,thanks!"which appeared in the June issue of your magazine.Following a discussion of the article in our English class,I have been chosen to express our disagreement with some of the views contained in the article.
First of all,we find it difficult to believe that such a large number of people are satisfied with the education system and with their working conditions.This is certainly not the case here,where many people have complaints about the poor standards of education.In fact,lack of job satisfaction is known to be among the greatest causes of stress in this country.
Secondly,it certainly is not true that most people are happy with public transport,either in our cities or in the the country.Furthermore,one of the most commonly heard complaints is that there are insufficient buses and trains to serve on ever-increasing population.It's a well-known fact that our public transport system is seriously under-funded and our roads are heavily crowded.And,as far as city life is concerned,a significant percentage would move if they had the opportunity.
Finally,we feel it is unrealistic of you to claim that most people have enough money to live on.Were this so,we would have none of the financial problems faced by most people and widespread poverty would not be an issue.
To conclude,we found your article to be extremely inaccurate in its assessment of living conditions.Since your magazine claims to represent students from all over the world,we look forward to reading more objective reporting in future issues.
Yours faithfully,

4.The science fiction type of entertainment is considered by most to be fathered by Jules Verne (AJourney to the Center of the Earth and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea) and H.G.Wells (The Time Machine and The War of the Worlds).Sci-Fi,as it is commonly shortened,is a fictional story in which science and technology have a significant influence on the characters and plot.Many such works are guesswork about what the future holds and how scientific findings and technological advances will shape humankind.

One of the best-known science fiction books is Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell.Published in1949,it was not meant as a prediction,but as a warning:Orwell was describing what he saw as the outcome of the ideas,trends,and emerging technologies of his time.Many invented terms from this novel have become common in everyday use,such as"big brother"and"doublethink".Even the author's name has been made into an adjective-Orwellian-and has become a warning expression of situations where privacy is lost and the individual has no power and is completely controlled by the government.Nineteen Eighty-Four was translated into sixty-five languages within five years of its publication,setting a record thatstill stands.
What helps bring science fiction into being is usually a new discovery or innovation.The author creates an analysis of the potential influence and consequences and then wraps it in a pleasant story.For example,the beginning of space exploration was followed a few years later by the Star Trek television program and movie series.The science fiction author's self-determined role is to search the world of future possibilities upon the road which we are traveling.

32.From the first paragraph,we know that science fiction might beA.

D.an analysis of how a new technology could be used to harm human

D.Cape Canaveral was mentioned in Jules Verne's fiction
35.According to the author,what is the role of science fiction in our life?D
A.A reference of technology.
B.A moral compass.
