In America, drivers' education is part of the regular high school curriculum. Every student in his or her
second year of high school is required to take a class in driver's education. However, unlike other courses, it is not given during the regular school year. Instead it is a summer course.
The course is divided into two parts: class time for learning laws and regulations and driving time to
practice driving. Class time is not unlike any other class. The students have a text from which they study the basic laws they must know to pass the written driving test that is given to anyone wanting to get a driver's
license(驾照).
Driving time is a chance for the students to get behind the wheel(steering wheel) and practice starting,
steering(驾驶), backing up, parking, switching lanes, turning corners, and all the other maneuvers(操作)
required to drive a car. Each student is required to drive a total of six hours. The students and the
instructor go out driving for two-hour blocks of time. Thus, each student gets half an hour driving time
per outing. The instructor and "driver" sit in the front seats and the other three students sit in the back.
Drivers Ed cars are unlike other cars in which they have two sets of brakes(刹车), one on the driver's
side and one on the other side where the instructor sits. Thus, if the student driver should run into
difficulties the instructor can take over. The car also has another special feature. On the top of the car is a
sign that reads: STUDENT DRIVER. That lets nearby drivers know that they should use extra caution
(谨慎)because the student driver is a beginning driver, not very experienced and prone to(易于…的)
driving slowly.
After the student has passed the driver's education course and reached the appropriate(适当的)age to drive(this age differs in every state but in most cases the person must be 16 years old), they can go to a
designated(指定的)state office to take their driver's test, which is made up of an eye examination, a
written test, and a road test. The person must pass all the three tests in order to be given a driver's license. If the person did well in his or her driver's education class, he or she will pass the test with flying colors a
nd get a driver's license.
1. In America, the driver's course mentioned above is ________.
A. considered as part of the advanced education
B. given to anyone wanting to get a driver's license
C. carried on at the same time as other courses
D. required of all the students of Grade 2 in high schools
2. To prevent accidents, a driver's ED car ________.
A. has a sign inside it
B. has two sets of brakes
C. is big enough to hold five persons
D. can't run very fast
3. We can infer that the students are required to ________ in their whole driving practice.
A. go out driving for twelve times
B. spend at least six hours driving
C. drive for two-hour blocks of time
D. get half an hour driving
4. Which of the following does not agree with the requirements for the students wanting to get their driver's license?
A. They must be 16 years of age.
B. They should go to have their driver's course.
C. They must have their eyes examined.
D.They ought to do well in their driver's course.
5. In the last sentence, "with flying colors" means _________.
A. happily
B. successfully
C. colorfully
D. quickly

In the kitchen of my mother's houses there has always been a wooden stand (木架) with a small
notepad (记事本)and a hole for a pencil.
I'm looking for paper on which to note down the name of a book I am recommending to my mother.
Over forty years since my earliest memories of the kitchen pad and pencil, five houses later, the current
paper and pencil look the same as they always did. Surely it can't be the same pencil? The pad is more
modern, but the wooden stand is definitely the original one.
"I'm just amazed you still have the same stand for holding the pad and pencil after all these years." I
say to her, walking back into the living-room with a sheet of paper and the pencil. "You still use a pencil.
Can't you afford a pen?"
My mother replies a little sharply. "It works perfectly well. I've always kept the stand in the kitchen.
I never knew when I might want to note down an idea, and I was always in the kitchen in those days."
Immediately I can picture her, hair wild, blue housecoat covered in flour, a wooden spoon in one
hand, the pencil in the other, her mouth moving silently. My mother smiles and says, "One day I was
cooking and watching baby Pauline, and I had a brilliant thought, but the stand was empty. One of the
children must have taken the paper. So I just picked up the breadboard and wrote it all down on the
back. It turned out to be a real breakthrough for solving the mathematical problem I was working on."
This story-which happened before I was born-reminds me how extraordinary my mother was, and is,
as a gifted mathematician. I feel embarrassed that I complain about not having enough child-free time to
wor k. Later, when my mother is in the bathroom, I go into her kitchen and turn over the breadboards.
Sure enough, on the back of the smallest one, are some penciled marks I recognize as mathematics.
Those symbols have travelled unaffected through fifty years, rooted in the soil of a cheap wooden
breadboard, invisible (看不到的) exhibits at every meal.

1. Why has the author's mother always kept the notepad and pencil in the kitchen?

A. To leave messages.
B. To list her everyday tasks.
C. To note down maths problems.
D. To write down a flash of inspiration.

2. What is the author's original opinion about the wooden stand?

A. It has great value for the family.
B. It needs to be replaced by a better one.
C. It brings her back to her lonely childhood.
D. It should be passed on to the next generation.

3. The author feels embarrassed for             .

A. blaming her mother wrongly
B. giving her mother a lot of trouble
C. not making good use of time as her mother did
D. not making any breakthrough in her field

4. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A. The mother is successful in her career.
B. The family members like travelling.
C. The author had little time to play when young.
D. The marks on the breadboard have disappeared.

5. In the author's mind, her mother is             .

A. strange in behaviour
B. keen on her research
C. fond of collecting old things
D. careless about her appearance(B)

In 1969 I was a young girl working in Toronto. I was from a small town in Ontario and had just
moved to the big city about three months earlier. It was one week before Christmas and I was going
home on the last streetcar of the evening.

I am a man who has been egoistic (自我为中心的) and I have had a lack of respect for myself and
others around me. I participated in(参加) various transformation workshops, however, it made no
difference. I remained stuck in my life. As a result, I became separated from my family and reached rock
bottom in my life. Having reached there, I resisted transforming myself.
After some time, I thought to myself, start believing in yourself and it will make a difference in your life.
I first started loving myself and then all those around me. I started respecting myself and then others
around me. My selfworth increased.
Sangeeta is my workmate. She's transparent, honest and respectful. She's very poor and has a large
family to support. In addition, her husband doesn't hold a regular job. In short, she's struggling in life.

pullover (毛线套衫). She didn't reply. I had my answer. The next day when she came to work again, I
gave her the money to buy a pullover for herself. The expression of thankfulness in her eyes was
something that will remain with me for a long time.
A few weeks ago, she was ill and didn't come to work. Instead, she sent her friend to do her work.
The moment I realized Sangeeta was sick, I gave her friend the money to buy medicines for her
treatment. It took Sangeeta some time to recover from her illness. The first thing I cared about was
whether she needed any more help of any kind. And she said, "Sir, you've done enough for me. I'm

In the animal kingdom, weakness can bring about aggression in other animals. This sometimes happens with humans also. But I have found that my weakness brings out the kindness in people.I see it every day
when people hold doors for me,pour cream into my coffee,or help me to put on my coat. And I have
discovered that it makes them happy.
From my wheelchair experience,I see the best in people, but sometimes I feel sad because those who
appear independent miss the kindness I see daily. They don't get to see this soft side of others.Often we try every way possible to avoid showing our weakness, which includes a lot of pretending. But only when we
stop pretending we're brave or strong do we allow people to show the kindness that's in them.
Last month, when I was driving home on a busy highway,I began to feel unwell and drove more slowly than usual.People behind me began to get impatient and angry, with some speeding up alongside me,horning(按喇叭) or even shouting at me.At that moment,I decided to do something I had never done in
twentyfour years of driving.I put on the car flashlights and drove on at a really low speed.
No more angry shouts and no more horns!
When I put on my flashlights,I was saying to the other drivers,"I have a problem here.I am weak and
doing the best I can."And everyone understood.Several times,I saw drivers who wanted to pass. They couldn't get around me because of the stream of passing traffic. But instead of getting impatient and angry, they waited, knowing the driver in front of them was in some way weak.
Sometimes situations call for us to act strong and brave even when we don't feel that way.But those
are few and far between.More often,it would be better if we don't pretend we feel strong when we feel
weak or pretend that we are brave when we're scared.

1.The author has discovered that people will feel happy when ________.

A.they offer their help
B.they receive others' help
C.they feel others' kindness
D.they show their weakness

2.The author feels sad sometimes because ________.

A.he has a soft heart
B.he relies much on others
C.some people pretend to be kind
D.some people fail to see the kindness in others

3.What did the other drivers do when they saw the flashlights?

A.They speeded up to pass.
B.They waited with patience.
C.They tried their best to help.
D.They put on their flashlights too.

4.In this passage, the author advises us to ________.

A.handle problems by ourselves
B.accept help from others
C.admit our weakness
D.show our bravery

5.Which of the following is the BEST title for the passage?

I am truly saddened about what is going on in my school district, especially in the school where I am
currently working.
Why are so many students not doing well? Why is there such a huge achievement gap between urban
and suburban students? Just this week, in my school the seventh grade team leader called a meeting to
discuss academic detention (放学后留校). The purpose of the detention is to allow students who are
doing poorly a second chance to redo the work. Now if a student did not understand an assignment I have no trouble allowing that student to redo a test or give some extra credit work, but if a student did poorly
because he/she opted(选择) not to do the work out of sheer laziness, that student should not be given a
second chance.
And parents should be held accountable for their children. That is another reason why there is such a
huge achievement gap. All children should be monitored at home in order to achieve great success in
school. Perhaps it might be a great idea for urban school districts to offer free classes to parents on how to help their students at home. Of course this idea is far fetched, after all we do not want to offend the
parents. What we will do instead is to spend a fortune on teacher training because if the kids are not doing well it must be the fault of the teacher. That kind of mindset, if allowed to continue will be a perfect recipe
for greater achievement gaps.
I started working at my current school in August and I have been in the teaching field for 25 years.
What I believe is that you can lead a horse to water but you can't make that  horse drink. You can't force kids to change bad habits over  night, nor can we afford to lower standards just so a kid can  pass a class.
1. The seventh grade team leader in the author's school called    a meeting to ________.
A. analyse the reason for the huge achievement gap between students
B. find out who is to blame for the huge achievement gap between students
C. talk about giving students who are doing poorly a second  chance to redo the work
D. discuss how to narrow the huge achievement gap between students
2. The author believes that a student can be given a second chance ________.
A. if he did poorly the first time
B. for whatever reason he did poorly the first time
C. if he failed the first time in spite of his efforts
D. if he comes from a suburban area
3. In the last paragraph, the author intends to tell us that ________.
A. a student can make improvement only when he is willing to
B. teachers are to blame if his students are doing poorly
C. the school should force those students to work harder if   they're doing poorly
D. the school should treat different students with different standards
