Given the tradition of students bringing apples to their teachers, it somehow seems fitting that an old apple barn(谷仓)will find a new life as a one-room schoolhouse. And it is just as fitting that a retired schoolteacher will become the caretaker of that historic treasure.
My friend Velma, a teacher for more than 30 years, has been retired for some time now, but that doesn’t stop her giving history lessons at the old Englewood School, located on her family’s
California farm. The lovingly restored building was constructed around 1850 as a home for a woodsman and later was used as apple barn. Then, in 1870 it began a new life as a schoolhouse.
Originally located in the nearby Englewood meadow, it was now moved its current site in 1978 by Velma’s late husband and his brother, Robert and Richard, who thought it would help keep
Velma busy in retirement. No nails had been used in the original construction, so each piece of wood had to be carefully marked and the building was reassembled(重装)on its new site. The brothers worked with much care and hard work to ensure a perfect fit of mitered(斜接的)corners.
After the relocation, Velma and her family furnished the school with some of its original desks. They also added a collection of schoolbooks, the oldest dating back to 1845. Perhaps the school’s most cherished souvenir is the diploma of student Hettie Essig, who graduated on June 30, 1904. Hettie’s daughter, Flora, presented Velma with the precious keepsake.
Nowadays Velma gives tours to local schoolchildren and other groups, who learn what it was like to attend school back in the good old days. She has kids ring the school bell, recite the Pledge of Allegiance and sing “Good Morning to You” as they might have done in days gone by. Then, with twinkling eyes and much enthusiasm, she tells the history of the school, and gives a short sample lesson.
1.The Englewood School was originally built as __________.
A. a man’ s house B. a schoolhouse
C. a restroom D. an apple barn
2.Which word can best describe the school’s being relocated?
A. Inspiring B. Refreshing
C. fashionable D. Challenging
3.What does the underlined part “the precious keepsake” in Para.4 mean?
A. The school’s original supplies
B. The collection of schoolbooks
C. The oldest schoolbook
D. The diploma of Hettie Essig.
4.Which can serve as the best title of the passage?
A. The Good Old Days in the Schoolhouse
B. A Mysterious Building with a Long History
C. A Historic One-room Schoolhouse
D. A Teacher Devoted to Restoring Old Buildings

As we neared the last days of my mom’s life, I wanted to understand what she was feeling and seeing. The day before she took her last breath I decided to ask her.
First I wanted to make sure she could comprehend what I was saying. I told her I loved her, and she raised her eyebrows in acknowledgment. Then I shared a funny story about a conversation my sister and I had. The corners of her mouth turned up in a smile. I could tell that she was taking in every word. And then I went for it.
“Mom, can I ask you a serious question?” She turned her head and opened her eyes fully. I could tell she wanted to grasp every word that came out of my mouth.
“Mom, do you see any of our dead relatives in the room? Do you see your dad?” she shook her head.
“Do you see your mom?” She shook her head again.
“Do you see dad?” Her response was quite different this time. She began nodding her head.
“Is he here in this room right now?” She nodded. “Can he see me?” She nodded again. Then she tried to communicate with words, but she couldn’t get the words out. The next morning she died peacefully...
A few weeks ago, I was wondering why I haven’t had many dreams of my mom since she died. That night I had one of the clearest dreams I’ve had for a long time. Mom was dressed beautifully. She stared at me with a huge smile. Her eyes were bright and full of life. She was happier than I had seen her in years. And she was younger. We didn’t exchange any words, but it was clear that she was happy and free.
I woke up with joy in my heart.

After I had checked in, I made my way slowly to the departure gate. As I was waiting to board the plan, I kept thinking about my ideal holiday destination; Jamaica, with its long, sandy beaches and crystal clear water.
As soon as the plane took off, I fell fast asleep and only woke to the sound of the announcement; “Ladies and gentlemen, please fasten your seat belts, as we will shortly be landing in Kingston.” I froze in my seat. Was I dreaming? Kingston? Jamaica? I had boarded the wrong plane!
Immediately after the plane landed, I explained the situation to the authorities. It seems there were also three of other passengers heading for Spain. Apparently it had been the airline’s fault, since the flight numbers for Spain and Jamaica were exactly the same! Therefore, with no flight to London for a week, the airline had no choice except to pay for our stay.
So there I was, lying on the beach, enjoying the music and marvelous food of Jamaica! As for Aunt Rosa, I suppose she just had to live without me!

The implication(含义) of saying “You are the prettiest girl in class,” or talking about the goals she scored but not her overall effort, is that you love her only when she looks the best, scores the highest, achieves the most. And this carries over to the classroom.
Social psychologist Carol Dweck, PHD, tested the effects of over-praise on 400 fifth graders while she was at Columbia University. She found that kids praised for “trying hard” did better on tests and were more likely to take on difficult assignments than those praised for being “smart”.
“Praising attributes(品质) or abilities makes a false promise that success will come to you because you have that quality, and it devalues effort, so children are afraid to take on challenges,” says Dweck, now at Stanford University, “They figure they’d better quit while they’re ahead.”
1.
A. tired of being praised B. worthy of being praised
C. very proud of being praised D. extremely fond of being praised
2.
A. better-known B. better-organized
C. more persuasive D. more interesting
3.
A. praise for efforts should be more encouraged
B. praise for results works better than praise for efforts
C. praising a child’s achievements benefits his or her success in life
D. praising a child’s abilities encourages him or her to take on challenges

Whenever we see a button, we want to press it because we know that something will happen. This is true in most cases, for example, on a doorbell. But some buttons are actually fake(假的), like the “close” button on a lift.
Many people are in the habit of pressing the “close” button because they don’t have the patience to wait for the lift doors to shut. But lifts’ “close” buttons are a complete trick, at least in the US - the doors will not close any faster no matter how hard you press.
It started in the 1990s when the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed in the US, making sure that all lifts stayed open long enough so that people with disabilities could enter. Only US firefighters and repairmen can use the buttons to speed up the door-closing process if they have a code or special keys.
But to normal lift riders, the buttons aren’t completely useless. According to psychologists, fake buttons can actually make you feel better by offering you a sense of control.
“A sense of control is very important. It reduces stress and increases well-being,” said Ellen J. Langer, a psychology professor at Harvard University. Experts also added that a lot of buttons that don’t do anything exist in our lives for this same purpose.
For example, pedestrian crosswalk buttons don’t live up to their names either. Pressing them used to help make the traffic signals change faster, but that was before computer controlled traffic signals were introduced.
But psychologists found it interesting that even when people are aware of these little “white lies”, they still continue to push fake buttons because as long as the doors eventually close, it is considered to be worth the effort.
1.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To explore the functions of fake buttons.
B. To describe different fake buttons.
C. To analyze various habits of pushing buttons.
D. To explain the disadvantages of fake buttons.
2.What can we learn about the “close” buttons on a lift in America?
A. They work when people press them hard.
B. They were designed for a sense of control.
C. They never speed up the door-closing process.
D. They take the safety of the disabled into account.
3.What can we infer about pedestrian crosswalk buttons?
A. They can make people feel better.
B. They help computers work faster.
C. They can control the traffic signals.
D. They help pedestrians cross safely.
4.Which may be the best title for the passage?
A. Buttons in the USA. B. Buttons Always Lie
C. Buttons May not Work D. “Close” Buttons on Lifts
