Weather has a strong effect on people. It influences people’s health. In August, it is very hot and wet in the southern part of the United States.Southerners have heart disease and other kinds of health problems during this month. In the Northeast and the Middle West, it is very hot at some times and very cold at some other times.People in these states tend to have heart problems after the weather changes in February or March.
The weather can also influence intelligence. For example, in a 1999 study by scientists, the IQ scores of a group of undergraduate college students were very high during a hurricane, but after that, their scores were 10 percent below.Hurricanes can increase intelligence.Very hot weather, on the other hand, can lower it.Students in many schools of the United States often do badly on exams in the hot months of the year, such as July and August.
Weather also has a strong influence on people’s feelings.Winter may be a bad time for thin people. They usually feel cold during cold weather. In hot summer weather, on the other hand, fat people may feel unhappy.
Low air pressure makes people feel free, but it also increases forgetfulness.People leave more bags and umbrellas on buses and in stores on low-pressure days. There is a “perfect weather” for work and health.People feel best at a temperature of about 64 with 65 percent humidity(湿度).
Are you feeling sick, sad, tired, forgetful, or very intelligent today? The weather may be the reason.
In the states where it is very hot or very cold, more people would have 4.________ after the weather changes.
During a hurricane, people’s IQ scores are 5.________.
Hot weather can 6.________ people’s intelligence.
Thin people may feel bad in 7.________.
8.________ people may feel unhappy in summer.
When there is 9.________, people are forgetful.
People feel 10.________ at a temperature of about 64 °F with 65 percent humidity.

Health researchers have noticed that some groups of people are more consistently healthy than others, and wondered…Is it race?Income?Where you live?In the United States, these disagreements in health outcomes have been the focus of intense research for the past several decades.
Harvard University health policy researcher Ellen Meara says scholars have found some clues as to why some groups of people have more or less disease than others. She says one important factor in people's health is the amount of education they have.
In her most recent paper, Meara looked at data from the United States census. These counts of people occur every 10 years.Meara and her colleagues examined data from several decades.
“
We looked at life expectancy(预测寿命)at age 25,”Meara says.“
How many additional years can you expect to live if you arrive at age 25 and your education has stopped at high school, or sooner?Versus how many years, can you expect to live if you've reached aged 25 and you've gone on to at least some college…”Meara says they found that in 1990, a 25-year-old who only had some secondary school could expect to live for a total of 75 years. In 2000, a 25 year old with some secondary education could also expect to live to the age of 75.
In contrast, for a better educated 25-year-old, they could expect to live to the age of 80 in 1990.Someone with a similar education level in the year 2000, could expect to live to be more than 81 years, 81.6 years to be exact.
Meara says, not only do better-educated people live longer to begin with, but in the past ten years, more educated people has made gains in the length of their lives.Meanwhile, the life expectancy hasn't changed for less educated people.
Some of these gains can be explained.Meara says researchers know that people who are more educated are more likely to quit smoking cigarettes, or not start at all, compared to people with less education.
“
I think it's a reminder not to be satisfactory,”Meara says.“Just because a population overall appears to be getting healthier, it doesn't always mean that those advantages and successes that many people have enjoyed really extend into all parts of the population. And I think that's something to really pay attention to regardless of whether you live in the US or elsewhere.”Meara points out that education can often determine income - people with more education frequently make more money. This makes them aware of health care, and purchase other resources and services that can keep them healthier. But the data on income do NOT show that people who make more money are automatically healthier.
Meara says education is key.People need to be educated in order to take advantage of opportunities for better health.

Whenever we meet with difficulty or failure, teachers, parents or others often say to us or perhaps we say to ourselves, “Never give up.” These can be encouraging words and words of determination.A person who believes in himself will keep trying to reach his goal no matter how many times he fails. In my opinion, the quality of determination to succeed is an important one to have. Therefore, I believe that we should never give up.
One reason is that if we give up too easily, we will rarely achieve anything. It is not unusual for us to fail in our first attempt at something new, so we should not feel disappointed and should try again.Besides, if we always give up when we fail, we will not be able to develop new skills and grow.
Another reason we should never give up is that we can learn from our mistakes so that we can not make the same ones.If we do not try again, the lesson we have learned is wasted.
Finally, we should never give up because as we work to reach our goals, we develop confidence, and this confidence can help us succeed in other areas of our lives. If we never challenge ourselves, we will begin to doubt our abilities.
In short, it is important that we do not give up when working for our goals.Whether we succeed in the end or not, we will learn something, and what we learn will help us to become better and more confident.Furthermore, if we give up, we have no chance of attaining our goals any more, but if we keep making great efforts, there is always a chance that we will succeed one day.

There are many destructive(破坏性的)forces when it comes to nature, which have destroyed whole cities and killed many people. They're really terrible, but they occur somewhat often, and this is why you see so many charities these days which focus their efforts on helping people who have been affected by natural disasters.
While the world is a very beautiful place to live in, there will always be parts of the world where natural disasters happen more often than in other places, where properties(财产)and lives are destroyed.Only the people who live in the country where tsunamis and earthquakes as well as other disasters occur experience these, and we can only imagine the suffering that they go through.
For some people out there, the world is cruel, but they have no choice but to stay where they are.A lot of the time people simply cannot afford to move away, as they might not be able to get a job when they leave.
In 2004, there was a tsunami in the Indian Ocean.A tsunami is a large wave that towers hundreds of feet into the air, and covers whole areas when it comes crashing(冲进)down on to dry land. This particular tsunami was caused by an earthquake that happened in the middle of the sea, shooting the water away from the ground and towards dry land. This tsunami actually reached thirty meters in height, and was one of the worst waves the world has ever seen.Over 200,000 people were hurt in the disaster.
In 2005, we also saw a hurricane happened in the United States. This hurricane was known as hurricane Katrina, and is perhaps the worst in the history of the world. It happened in 2005 and destroyed millions of properties in the area.It also took the lives of nearly 2,000 American people. It was known that for ten days, the wind swept through the area, meaning the most powerful country in the world became helpless in their attempts to save the people who were affected by the hurricane.
Finally, in 2008 we saw yet another natural disaster. This time it was a cyclone(旋风), which is similar to a hurricane but happens in a circular motion(圆周运动).This cyclone Nargis had been one of the strongest to have ever occurred, causing the death of nearly 150,000 people. All of these were terrible disasters that were unavoidable.

Iceland has the highest birth rate in Europe, the highest divorce rate, and the highest percentage of women working outside the home.Such statistics are often evidence of an unhappy, troublesome society, with loads of children, broken homes and absent mothers. But Iceland is the exception-its citizens are apparently the happiest in the world.New rankings from the United Nations rate Iceland as the best country in the world in which to live.
Perhaps the country's geographic location contributes to Icelanders' happiness.Located in the middle of the North Atlantic, with Greenland as its nearest neighbor, Iceland is free from the taboos that cause so much suffering elsewhere. For instance, people who divorce are not looked down upon by the society.
Icelanders' ancestors are the Vikings, a north European people who invaded European coasts from the beginning of the 8th through the 10th century. This tradition of getting out into the world lives on in modern-day Iceland.Practically all Icelanders have studied or worked in other countries, and most speak English.Perhaps as a result, Iceland's economic policies combine the best of those from Europe and the US to create its own welfare system.
Indeed, the country is rich in writers, painters, film makers and accomplished musicians. There's Sigur Ros, a post-rock band that plays to the highest standards all over the world.Half the population appears to have written a book.
“Iceland has terrible nature, with its bitter ever-changing weather,” said Haraldur Jonsson, a painter, video and performance artist.“We cannot escape it.So we find ways to live with it.We have to have a rich life to fill the empty spaces.”
