I was fifteen months old, a happy kid until the day I fell. It was a 1 fall. I landed on a glass rabbit which cut my eye badly enough to make it blind. Trying to save the eye, the doctors stitched(缝合) the eyeball together where it was 2, leaving a big ugly scar(疤痕) in the middle of my eye. Mama’s words were of great help for me to face the world 12. As a teenager, even though I tended to look down to hide my shame, I found that sometimes when I held my head up high and let people know me, they 13 me. In high school, I was 14 both academically and socially. I was 15 elected class president. My mother’s words helped me begin to realize that by letting people look at my face, I let them 16 the intelligence and beauty behind both eyes, even if they couldn’t see it on the 17.
Now I’m a happy wife and great mother. The message “Hold your head up high,” has been
18 many times in my 19 home. Each of my children has felt 20 invitation, and the gift my mother gave me has lived on in another generation.

Do you remember last summer, when angry travelers were urging the government to do something about airline customer service? Airlines 1 to improve, and they adopted (采用) new standards just before Christmas. 2 as another summer nears, plenty of 3 travelers don’t see much improvement in customer 4 overall.
This month, the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) office will publish its first critical 5 on whether airlines are 6 their promises. One survey suggests problems: the number of 7 to the DOT about the top 10 airlines in the first 8 rose 89% from a year ago .
Hit last summer by passenger complaints and the threat (威慑) of consumer-protection laws by the 9, 14 airlines 10 to adopt a set of basic customer-service standards called Customers First . The “12 promises” to passengers were introduced 11
Recently, DOT inspector general Kenneth Mead, at McCain’s request, sent 20 examiners to airports to 12 whether each airline is doing what it promised. Mead warns travelers shouldn’t 13 too much. Most of the promises are 14 better communication with customers , not problems with flights .
“Passengers should show more understanding to airlines about their 15 to better air service.” Spokeswoman Shelly Sassoon says. “And when 16 are made, it takes a long time for them to be noticed,” she says.
Now, the efforts may be working. During the first quarter, Delta had the second-lowest rate of complaints among the 17 10 carriers. 18, its rate, along with other carriers’, is up from last year. McCain and other lawmakers say there may be a 19 to pass new consumer-protection 20.

Once my mother told me a story that in Africa, when an antelope (羚羊) wakes up every morning, the first thing it thinks about is, “I must be1to run faster than the fastest lion, or I will be killed.”2, a lion wakes from his dream. The first thing the lion thinks about is, “I must be able to catch the3antelope, or I will starve to4.” So almost simultaneously(同时地), the antelope and the lion get up and start running toward the5sun.
This is6: full of chances and challenges. Whether you are an antelope or a lion, you must go7when the sun rises. For students, it is just the same. If we don’t study hard, sooner or later, we will8the other students. At first I didn’t know what the word “exam”9. Later, I knew an exam was a kind of10. In competitions, there are always winners and11. As I grew up, I got to know competition well. In one’s life, there must be competitions, so people can12.
Each time I saw children playing games and heard their13, I wished I were that age again. 14, I remembered my parents’ words: You must work very hard for a good future. So I15my pen and began to study hard again.
I was still not sure what competition16meant. One day, I was17in an English-speaking competition. When I went to the stage, I saw other students looking at me kindly. Suddenly I18what competition was. It is not as cruel as my teacher and parents told me. In fact, competition is the19: it is kind and necessary.
I learned a lot from realizing this20. Now I understand better about the world. Competition is important for us all.

We had moved from Cairo to Mt. Vernon, Illinois, away from my grandmother when I was eight years old. I missed her 1. I was told I was her favorite grandchild; she was my favorite granny. Mother must have sensed my 2, for she would take my little brother and me back to visit my Granny on occasions.
She didn’t live in a big house or have expensive things, but I never 3 it; I just knew she loved me and I loved her back.

At a14factory, she works standing for the whole day and draws patterns(图案) for clothes over and over. After work, my mom at times gets stuck(被困) in15for two hours on her way back home. When I16my school life with her work life, I should not be the one to17. At least I have some interesting things to do at school, but one mistake at work can cost my mom her job. That cold January night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was, walking home at one in the morning after a tiring 1 at the theatre. With opening night only a week away, I was 2 learning my lines. I was having trouble 3 my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously 4 giving up both acting and San Francisco. 5 had become too much for me.
As I walked down 6 streets under tall buildings, I felt very 7 and cold. I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers. Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets.
About a block from my apartment, I heard a sound behind me. I turned 8, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. 9 I saw was a shining streetlight. 10, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run fast. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk.
11 I wasn’t cold or tired anymore. I ran out of the door and back to 12 I’d heard the noise. 13 I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found.
Just as I was about 14 the search, I heard the garbage truck pull up to the sidewalk next to me. When a voice 15 from the inside. “Alisa Camacho?” I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man with an 16 look in his eyes. “Is this what you’re looking for?” he asked, 17 a small square shape.
It was nearly 3 a. m. by the time I got into bed. I 18 get much sleep that night, but I had gotten my wallet back. I 19 had gotten back some enjoyment of city life. I realized that the city couldn’t be a bad place 20 people were willing to help each other.
