There is a time when Karyn Bosnak couldn’t pay a ＄59 bill at the grocery store. She was officially broke. She didn’t have enough money to get on the subway, but she looked rich. She was a television producer, earned ＄900 a week, and had a closetful of designer labels like Gucci and Louis Vuitton. But she also had a ＄20,221.40 credit card bill and an empty bank account. Karyn decided that it was time for a change. She built a website and simply asked people to help her out by sending her a dollar or two.

On the site, Karyn honestly explained her situation. “If 20,000 people gave me just ＄1, I’d be home free.” Amazingly, it worked. Her website was visited by more than a million people. Although most donors just gave a few dollars, one generous donor sent ＄1,000. She was on TV and in newspapers and magazines. She was offered a book deal and a movie contract. And of course, she was able to pay off her credit card debt. She also sold her designer clothes on eBay. In her closet, where the Gucci purse once sat, Karyn keeps all the letters that people have sent her.

It’s hard to understand why so many people helped a total stranger pay off her huge credit card bill. Karyn explains, “I was just honest about what happened; I didn’t make up some sob story (悲伤的故事) about saving the world.” Her donors think it’s funny and original, and view it less as a charity than as an entertainment site. Imitators have appeared all over the Internet, some with extremely selfish requests for things like a BMW or a house.

Actually, Karyn was not the first person to put up a website asking strangers for money. The practice has a name: “cyber-begging.” Most sites receive little traffic and even less cash. Louis Armstrong had two famous nicknames (绰号). Some people called him Bagamo. They said his mouth looked like a large bag. Musicians often called him Pops, as a sign of respect for his influence on the world of music.

Born in 1901 in New Orleans, he grew up poor, but lived among great musicians. Jazz was invented in the city a few years before his birth. Armstrong often said, “Jazz and I grew up together.”

Armstrong showed a great talent for music when he was taught to play the cornet (短号) at a boy’s home. In his late teens, Armstrong began to live the life of a musician. He played in paradise, clubs, and on the steamboats that traveled on the Mississippi River. At that time, New Orleans was famous for the new music of jazz and was home to many great musicians. In 1922 he went to Chicago. There, the tale of Louis Armstrong began. From then until the end of his life, Armstrong was celebrated and loved wherever he went. Armstrong had no equal when it came to playing American popular songs.

His cornet playing had deep humanity and warmth that caused many listeners to say, “Listening to Pops just makes you feel good all over.” He was the father of the jazz style and also one of the best-known and most admired people in the world. Spending time with your kids is the best way to give them you attention. No matter whether you stay at home or work outside the home, you can still give quality time to your kids. Quality time doesn’t mean the whole family sitting for four hours watching TV. It means turning the TV off and playing games together, reading books, going for walks---anything!

Giving kids your attention means listening to them when they talk. I don’t mean half-way listening and saying “uh huh” like we do to our spouses (配偶) when they’re talking about their day at work. Raising kids is not the time to be selfish with your time. You can be selfish later on when they’re grown and having kids of their own. If you feel guilty about not being able to spend enough time with your kids, resist trying to buy their attention. You don’t have to make every weekend a Disneyland day. And you don’t have to continually buy them gifts as a means of letting them know you love them. The answer is “time”. Time is what they want most from you.

Your kids, no matter what age, are on some type of schedule. They get up, eat breakfast, eat lunch, eat dinner, etc. What do they do the rest of the time? Fill up some of the empty spots in their schedules with activities. Have them help you do something around the house or make them take part in a project with you. This is how day care workers are able to keep so many kids under control---they fill up the day with activities.
