Writers have always known there are a limited number of storylines．And it is increasingly difficult to get out in front of a viewer's expectations．Almost every possible subject has not only been covered but covered exhaustively．How many hours of serial killer plot has the average viewer seen？Fifty？A hundred？This becomes painfully clear to any writer who attempts to orally tell his story （scriptwriter is closer to the oral tradition than it is to literature）．Originality has always been in short supply．Does the proliferation （泛滥） of media mean that it is harder to be original today than it was 50years ago？Well，yea．Today's viewers live in a biosphere of narrative．Twenty-four-seven，multimedia，all the time．When a storyteller competes for a viewer's attention，he not only competes with simultaneously occurring narratives，he competes with the variations of his own narrative．That's real competition．This exhaustion of narrative is behind the rise of recent"counter-narrative"entertainments，such as：
1．Reality TV．Any regular viewer knows that reality television follows its own scripted formulas，but the appearance of being unscripted is essential to its appeal．Weary of so much predicable plot，the jaded viewer turns to reality．
2．Anecdotal narrative．The attraction of films such as Slacker and its mumblecore progeny （呢喃类） is the enjoyment of watching behavior impeded by the artifice of plot．It is not"fake"，not"designed"（although of course it is）．
3．Reenactment drama．Whether based on famous events or lesser-known ones，reenactment entertainment sells the premise that these events actually happened and were not cooked up by a staff of writers （though，again，if not actually cooked up，they were seasoned and served by writers）．
4．Video games．The ability of the viewer to participate in the storytelling process creates an illusion of non-plan．
5．Mini-mini drama．Part of the appeal of three-to five-minute stories created for cellphones，YouTube and original programming is the illusion of not being crafted narratives．Just bits of life．
6．Documentaries．A staple of filmed entertainment since its beginnings，documentaries，historically the poor cousins of commercial cinema，have grown in number and viewership，an increase owed in part to the desire of viewers to look beyond predictable narratives．
Storytelling began as ceremony and evolved into ritual．It was commercialized in the medieval times，became big business in the 19^th century and international industry in the 20^th．The traditional concept of movies，a projected image in a dark room of viewers，feels increasingly old．Narrative will mutate （变异） and endure．Audio-visual entertainment is changing and narrative will change with it．

3．In the past 15years，Chad Pregracke has helped pull more than 67，000tires from the Mississippi River and other waterways across the United States．
But that's just scratching the surface．He's also helped retrieve 218washing machines，19tractors，12hot tubs，four pianos and almost 1，000refrigerators．
For Pregracke，removing this debris-pieces of wood，metal，brick，etc．-has become his life's work．Sometimes called"The Rivers'Garbageman"，he lives on a barge （驳船） about nine months out of the year with members of his 12-person crew．Together，they organize community cleanups along rivers across the country．
It's a dirty job，but Pregracke took it on because he realized that no one was doing it．It began as a solo （独自的） effort，and over the years his energy and enthusiasm have helped it grow．To date，about 70，000volunteers have joined him，helping collect more than 7million pounds of debris through his nonprofit．
Pregracke grew up in East Moline，Illinois，where the Mississippi River was in his backyard．As a teenager，he worked as a commercial shell diver and began to notice the heaps of debris in the waterway-one that supplies drinking water to 18million people in more than 50U．S．cities．

His nonprofit now has a fleet of boats．And while he has resources and know-how，he depends on each community he visits to supply the manpower needed to get the job done．
At the cleanup sites，Pregracke's humor creates cheerful atmosphere-something he knows is necessary for the work that they do．His team uses motivational speeches and music to get the volunteers amped up （陶醉）．

What does it mean to be a hero？I think a hero is someone who goes out of his way to make others happy．My hero is Mr．Wright，my chorus（合唱队） teacher．

Welcome to our third newsletter of the year!
•Our main activity for March is our Walk for the Woods fundraising events on Saturday，17th March，starting any time between 10a．m．and 2p．m．We will be walking the distance between Warley Woods and Tipperary．It is indeed a long way-80miles．The more people that you can get sponsor you，the more money we can raise to help look after our beautiful woodland．More information is available at our website．
•The Sunday volunteers planted two beeches and an oak last week．This was thanks to the money from the Big Tree Plant and to Lisa and Gordon Whitiker，whose friends gave money for the big trees instead of for their wedding presents．Thanks to everyone who took part．
•There were 15volunteers at the Oral History Training Day which was led very ably by Julia Letts．The group will be meeting again and will start to interview the local people who have offered to tell their stories．We are happy to hear from others who would like to be interviewed about their memories of the Woods for the project．If you or anyone you know is interested，please call Viv Cole at the office．This project is financed by Heritage Lottery Fund．
•There was a huge response to the Forest Schools activities held at half term．These will be held again during the Easter holidays on the following dates：4th April from 10a．m．to 3p．m．for over 8s．On 12th April form 10a．m．to 12noon，there will be a Teddy Bears'Picnic for the under 8s．All these must be booked in advance．
