13.When I enrolled at Pepperdine University in 1974,my mother exercised her parental right to express her worry at my departure.I responded with typical teenage indifference and ignorance."Mom,I'm only an hour away. What's the bit deal?""You just wait until you have one of your own,"she cried."Then you'll know what I'm feeling."It has been a little more than a month since my daughter Devin moved into her dorm at Occidental college, and life as I know it has come to an end.Or that's what it feels like.Mom,you were right.
The nest's empty loneliness is almost unbearable. Why does it hurt so bad?Science has an answer:We are social mammals who experience deep attachment to our fellow friends and family,an evolutionary throwback to our Paleolithic(旧石器时代的)hunter-gatherer days of living in small bands.Bonding unified the group, aiding survival in harsh climates and against unforgiving enemies.Attachment between parents and offspring assured that there is no one better equipped to look after the future survival of your genes than yourself.
The empty-nest syndrome is real, but there is good news for this and all forms of loss and grief.According to Harvard psychologist Daniel Gilbert,we are not very good at forecasting our unhappiness. Most of us think that we would be miserable for a very long time.Gilbert calls this the durability bias,an emotional misunderstanding.
The durability bias and the failure to recognize the power of our emotional immune systems lead us to overestimate how depressed we will feel and for how long, and to underestimate how quickly we will get rid of it and feel better.
For me,taking the long view helps. How long?Deep time.Evolutionary time,in which 6,895 days represent a mere 0.000000005% of the 3.5 billion year history of life on Earth.
Each of us parents makes one small contribution to the evolutionary importance of life's continuity from one generation to the next without a single gap,an unbroken link over the eons(永久).
57.What message does the author want to express by telling us her experience in the first paragraph?C
A.The empty-nest syndrome is really hard for old parents to bear.
B.All people should learn to love their parents no matter how old they are.
C.A person will not understand his parents?love until he has his own child.
D.The love parents give to children is selfless and should be respected.
58.According to Daniel Gilbert,the empty-nest syndrome isA.
A.caused by our emotional misunderstanding
B.not a real problem but in our imagination
C.the result of overestimating our happiness
D.from our emotional immune systems
59.The author gets herself out of the empty-nest syndrome by holding a positive idea thatD.
A.she can go to see her daughter regularly when she misses her
B.her daughter will one day come back to her after graduation
C.her daughter will understand her when she has her own children
D.the departure from her daughter is much shorter than the history of life on Earth
60.What kind of role do parents play in the human history, according to the last paragraph?B
A.They cultivate talents for the development of history.
B.They help keep the life's continuity without a broken link.
C.They accelerate the evolutionary pace of the human beings.
D.They point a right way for the next generation to develop themselves.

9.Blogging may have psychological(心理的)benefits for teens suffering from social anxiety, improving their self-esteem(自尊) and helping them relate better to their friends, according to new research published by the American Psychological Association."Research has shown that writing a personal diary and other forms of expressive writing are a great way to release emotional distress and just feel better,"said the study's lead author,Meyran Boniel-Nissim,PhD,of the University of Haifa,Israel."Teens are online anyway,so blogging enables free expression and easy communication with others."
Blogging has a stronger positive effect on troubled students'well-being than merely expressing their social anxieties and concerns in a private diary, according to the article published online in the APA journal Psychological Services?.Opening the blog up to comments from the online community intensified those effects.
The researchers randomly surveyed high school students in Israel, who had agreed to fill out a questionnaire about their feelings on the quality of their social relationships.A total of 161 students--124 girls and 37 boys, with an average age of 15--were selected because their scores on the survey showed they all had some level of social anxiety or distress. All the teens reported difficulty making friends or relating to the friends they had.The researchers assessed the teens'self-esteem,everyday social activities and behaviors before, immediately after and two months after the 10-week experiment.
Four groups of students were assigned to blog. Two of those groups were told to focus their posts on their social problems, with one group opening the posts to comments; the other two groups could write about whatever they wanted and, again, one group opened the blog up to comments. The number and content of comments were not evaluated for this experiment. The students could respond to comments but that was not required. Two more groups acted as controls--either writing a private diary about their social problems or doing nothing.Participants in the writing and blogging groups were told to post messages at least twice a week for 10 weeks.
Four experts, who held master's or doctoral degrees in counseling and psychology, assessed the bloggers'social and emotional condition via their blog posts.Students were assessed as having a poor social and emotional state if they wrote extensively about personal problems or bad relationships or showed evidence of low self-esteem,for example.
Self-esteem,social anxiety, emotional distress and the number of positive social behaviors improved significantly for the bloggers when compared to the teens who did nothing and those who wrote private diaries.Bloggers who were instructed to write specifically about their difficulties and whose blogs were open to comments improved the most. All of these results were consistent at the two month follow-up.
The authors conceded that the skewed(有偏向的) sex ratio was a limitation to the study. However, the researchers analyzed the results separately by gender and found that boys and girls reacted similarly to the interventions and there were no major differences. They said future research should attempt to control the subjects for sex.

C.To help evaluate the number and content of blog comments.
D.To offer a comparison for checking the experimental result.
52.From the experiment we can know thatB.
A.writing private diaries makes no difference to the relief of one's emotional stress
B.teenagers opening their blogs up to comments have more psychological benefits
C.the positive effects of expressing one's emotions by blogging don't last very long
D.those describing bad relationships on blogs tend to develop more mental problems
53.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?C

B.Sex rate had been taken into account before the survey was conducted.
C.The authors were intended to improve the experiment in the future.

The pop superstar died on the eve of the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles at the same hotel where her mentor, record mogul Clive Davis, was holding an annual pre-event party featuring scores of music industry celebrities(名人).
A dramatic scene unfolded at the Beverly Hilton hotel as guests arriving for the party expressed shock at her death, while reporters swarmed the hotel, fans gathered outside to light candles in her memory and helicopters hovered overhead.
Beverly Hills police said they were called to the Beverly Hilton at around 3:43 p.m.PST,and fire department personnel who were already at the location responded immediately.Houston was in her fourth-floor room but was unresponsive to CPR,and she was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m.

Los Angeles County coroners removed Houston's body from the hotel after midnight through a backdoor to avoid the crush of media set up to cover her shocking death.
Typically, coroners conduct an autopsy within a day or two,at which point they might release some preliminary information about the death. If drugs or alcohol are involved, however,an official cause of death would not be released until after toxicology(毒理学) tests, which could take six to eight weeks.
