19.While income worry is a rather common problem of the aged, loneliness is another problem that aged parents may face.Of all the reasons that explain their loneliness,a large geographical distance between parents and their children is the major one. This phenomenon is commonly known as"Empty Nest syndrome".
In order to find better chances outside their countries, many young people have gone abroad, leaving their parents behind with no clear idea of when they will return home.Their parents spend countless lonely days and nights, taking care of themselves,in the hope that someday their children will come back to stay with them. The fact that most of these young people have gone to Europeanized or Americanized societies makes it unlikely that they will hold as tightly to the value of duty as they would have if they had not left their countries.Whatever the case,it has been noted that the values they hold do not necessarily match what the actually do.This geographical and cultural distance also prevents the grown-up children from providing response in time for their aged parents living by themselves.
The situation in which grown-up children live far away from their aged parents has been described as"distant parent phenomenon",which is common both in developed countries and in developing countries. Our society has not yet been well prepared for"Empty Nest Syndrome".
66.According to the passage, the loneliness of aged parents is mainly caused byD.

A.they do not hold to the value of duty at all
B.they can give some help to their parents back home
C.they cannot do what they should for their parents
D.they believe what they actually do is right
69.From the last paragraph,we can infer thatB.
A.the situations in the developed and developing countries are different
B."Empty Nest Syndrome"has arrived unexpectedly in our society
C.children will become independent as soon as they go abroad
D.the aged parents are not fully prepared for"Empty Nest Syndrome"

18.Zoos divide opinion:there are those who think it is cruel (残忍的) to keep animals locked up while others believe zoos are important for the survival of endangered species.
To think that zoos imprison animals is to misunderstand what zoos are about.Without zoos many of the creatures we love and admire would no longer exist.Every single day, over one hundred animal species vanish.Scientists predict that as early as 2050 one quarter of the Earth's species will become extinct(绝种的).
Some animals are in danger because they are hunted.Worriedly, the population of tigers has already fallen by ninety-five percent.Other species are in danger because of a lack of food. For example, there are fewer than 1300 giant pandas left in the wild.
Zoos have special breeding programs to help those animals in danger. These breeding programs are proving very successful. As Irene Shapiro from Zoo and Wildlife Support says,"the Puerto Rican Parrot has grown in numbers from just thirteen to about eighty-five and the Golden Lion Tamarin Monkey, which has almost died out twenty years ago,has been reintroduced back into the wild."
Unfortunately, not everyone understands this important role zoos play. For example,Brian Featherstone from the Anti-Zoo Forum says,"I can't believe we take animals from the wild and put them in cages for the entertainment of the public! We should view them on film or TV in their natural environment."
However, this misses the point.A zoo does more than display animals to the public. It ensures their survival.Without zoos you would not be able to see many of these animals on TV or anywhere else!
67.What's the writer's attitude towards zoos?C
A.He shows no opinion either for or against them.
B.He thinks that they are unnecessary and cruel.
C.He believes they play an important environmental role.
D.He expresses a desire that more of them be built.
68.The underlined word"vanish"in Paragraph 2 most probably meansB.
A.remain           B.disappear        C.become rarer         D.get killed
69.According to the passage some people do not agree with zoos because theyD.
A.are too expensive to run
B.put animals in danger
C.do not provide enough food
D.keep animals locked up
70.According to the writer, the most important function of the zoo is toC.
A.make a lot of money
B.entertain visitors
C.ensure animals'survival
D.educate the public.

17.Travel is exciting and summer is a busy period for holiday travel. Many people will travel great distances in airplanes, cars or other vehicles.Experts say people should know about other health problems that can strike when traveling by air.
One of these is a condition called hypoxia (缺氧症).It results from a lack of oxygen to the brain.Experts say the body begins losing oxygen minutes after an airplane leaves the ground. The air pressure in a plane during flight is lower than at sea level. This makes it more difficult for the body to effectively use the same amount of oxygen as it would on the ground.Fewer oxygen molecules (分子) cross the tissues (组织) in the lungs and reach the bloodstream.
The result is a five to twenty percent drop in the amount of oxygen in the blood. This reduces the amount of oxygen that reaches the organs of the body.
One effect of this lack of oxygen to the brain is a headache. When this happens, the heart attempts to fix the situation by beating harder and faster. This can make the traveler feel tired.
These signs of hypoxia are not dangerous in a healthy person. But a drop in oxygen level can cause a health emergency in people with heart or lung problems. They might lose consciousness or even suffer a heart attack.
Experts say that smoking cigarettes and drinking alcoholic liquids also reduce the body's ability to use oxygen. So they suggest that people not drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes either before or during a flight. They also say persons with heart or lung problems should seek advice from their doctors before flying.
63.The author writes the passage mainly toC.
A.warn people in airplanes of possible dangers

A.use more oxygen it needs
B.increase the air pressure
C.reduce the amount of blood

15.The survey by The Harvard Crimson was emailed to incoming first year undergraduates; 1,600 students responded. Results showed that at least a tenth of the students polled admitted to having cheated on an exam before starting at the university, while almost half admitted to cheating on their homework.
Athletes were apparently the most prone to cheating.20 percent of students who played a university sport admitted to cheating on an exam compared to 9 percent of students who did not.
The survey also revealed that men were not only more likely to cheat but were also more likely to admit to it.
The results, compared to a previous survey done on the class of 2013,suggested that cheating may be becoming more commonplace.Of the outgoing seniors only 7 percent admitted to cheating in an exam and another 7 percent said they had been dishonest on a take-home test.32 percent of the seniors said they had cheated on homework during their undergraduate years.
The surveys come in the wake of a cheating scandal at the university which saw 120 students investigated for sharing answers on an exam in 2012.
One recent graduate stated:"Cheating was commonplace when I was at Harvard, especially with students in their first year or two.I would say as many as 60 per cent of students took notes into some exams. No one really cared and the faculty, well some of them at least, seemed to recognize and yet ignore the problem".
In an email to NBC News,Jeff Neal,a Harvard representative, explained that a committee, made up of faculty, staff and students had been established to tacklecheating, which"is a national problem in American education".
63.Of the following 4 university students, who is most likely to cheat?A

14.This week,we talk about the application process for American colleges and universities. This is part eight in our Foreign Student Series.
Earlier,we explained how to begin a search for schools by going to one of the American educational advising centers around the world. We also discussed the rules for entering in the United States. And we talked about programs that can be completed online.
But if your goal is to come to the United States to study, then it is time to make a list of colleges or universities that interest you.Be sure to choose more than one.Directors of foreign student admissions say students should apply to at least three schools.
Some students want to attend a small college.Others want to go to a big university. If a really big university appeals to you, then there are ones likeOhio State. That university in Columbus,Ohio,in the Midwest, has almost fifty-two thousand students. There are students this year from around one hundred fifty countries.
Ohio State provides international students with an application on its Web site. You can pay the application charge online with a credit card.Or you can print the forms and mail them with the payment.
Many colleges and universities have their applications and also their catalogs online.
You should start on your applications at least two years before you want to begin studies.
Completing a college application can take some time. But answering all the questions is not enough.Another important step is taking admissions tests. The SAT is the college entry test that American high school students most commonly take.Another one is the ACT.
Colleges and universities may also require international students to take the TOEFL--the Test of English as a Foreign Language.
If you have a general question for our Foreign Student Series, write to special@voanews.com.

12.There are many differences between America and China.The biggest difference is traffic rules.In America there are too much more cars than in China.But there are much fewer traffic jams and accidents in America than in China.We hardly see traffic police in the street,but all cars obey strictly traffic rules,and people hardly find that a car does not obey traffic rules in the street.
About American traffic rules, there are many better terms, such as:
1.Stop line:There are stop lines in all crossing without traffic light (some have two stop lines and others have four stop lines).All cars must stop while meeting the stop line.
2.Traffic light:There is traffic light in the crossing of the road.Cars may almost turn every direction.The traffic light can give signal step by step including u-turn.There is a kind of middle lane of turning left.When a car wants to turn left in the road,he may enter into the middle lane of turning left and give a signal of turning left.When he thinks being safe,he may turn left.In many conditions the order of passing is also given very specifically.If people want to change lane or turn,they must look behind and think being safe.Only so,they may do it.
3.Specific item:Such as parking,there are three kinds of lines (their colors are white,blue or red) in the roadside.Every line may park different kinds of cars.There are many streets in some residential areas (住宅区),and there is a kind of rule that any car cannot park at any time or any period time.In every parking,there are some special positions for invalid (伤残的) people.
4.About the priority of passenger and car:At any case,passengers have the priority to cars.And only after passengers have passed the road and got the top of sidestep,cars may go ahead.
In general, traffic rules of America are very specific, convenient, safe and humanizing.

59.Which of the following is NOT the reason why we can hardly see traffic police in the street in America?C
A.Traffic police are not very necessary because few cars break traffic rules.
B.The traffic is very clear and there are few traffic jams and accidents in the street.
C.There are so many cars in the street that the traffic police can't be seen.
D.The effective traffic rules play an important part in the road safety.
60.Why is there a middle lane of turning left on the road?A
A.It is designed for the cars that want to turn left.
B.It is very safe to drive there.
C.It is very convenient for the traffic police to find the cars that break the rules.
D.The cars that want to turn left can easily give a signal of turning left.
61.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?D
A.In America,all cars in the crossing must stop when they meet the stop line.
B.In America,any car cannot park in the streets in some residential areas.
C.If people want to turn,they can obey the guide of the traffic police.
D.There are more traffic jams in China.
62.What's the best title for the passage?A
A.American Traffic Rules
B.Differences in Traffic Rules between China and America
C.Traffic Jams in America
D.American People Who Obey Traffic Rules.

11."Reduce,reuse,and recycle",this familiar environmentalist slogan tells us how to reduce the amount of rubbish that ends up in landfills and waterways.The concept is being used to deal with one possibly dangerous form of waste-electronic junk (电子垃圾),such as old computers,cell phones,and televisions.But this process for managing e-waste may be used in an unscrupulous(肆无忌惮的) way more often than not used,a recent report suggests.
"A lot of these materials are being sent to developing nations under the excuse of reuse-to bridge the digital divide,"said Richard Gutierrez,a policy researcher.
One of the problems is that no one proves whether these old machines work before they hit the seaways.Because of this,the report says,e-waste is a growing problem in Lagos,Nigeria,and elsewhere in the developing world.Much of the waste ends up being thrown away along rivers and roads.Often it's picked apart by poor people,who may face dangerous exposure to poisonous chemicals in the equipment.
Businessmen also pay workers a little money to get back materials such as gold and copper.This low-tech recovery process could expose workers and the local environment to many dangerous materials used to build electronics.According to Gutierrez,this shadow economy exists because the excuse of recycling and reusing electronics gives businessmen"a green passport"to ship waste around the globe."Developing nations must take upon some of the responsibility themselves,"Gutierrez said.But,he added,"A greater portion of this responsibility should fall on the exporting state."
China,for example,has become a dumping place for large amounts of e-waste.The nation is beginning to take action to stop the flow of dangerous materials across its borders.The Chinese government,after many years of denial is finally beginning to take the lead.

67.The passage mainly tells us thatD.
A.developing countries are making full use of e-waste
B.e-waste is a growing problem in developed countries
C.developing countries are facing serious environmental problems
D.e-waste is sent to developing countries under the excuse of reuse
68.What does the third paragraph mainly discuss?C
A.A lot of e-waste is dumped in developing countries.
B.Old computers and TVs still work before sent abroad.
C.The problem of e-waste is growing in developing countries.
D.Poor people break up e-waste to collect some valuable materials
69.From what Gutierrez said we can learn thatD.
A.poor countries should be blamed for this problem
B.developing countries should be responsible for this problem
C.neither rich nor poor countries should be blamed for this problem
D.exporting countries should be mainly responsible for this problem
70.It can be inferred from the last paragraph thatB.
A.China has hidden a large amount of e-waste in many secret places
B.China has greatly changed her idea about the problem of e-waste
C.China is falling behind other countries in dealing with e-waste
D.China has prevented poisonous materials entering China for a long time.

10."Long time no see"is a very interesting sentence. When I first read this sentence from an American friend's email,I laughed.I thought it was a perfect example of Chinglish.
Obviously,it is a word-by-word literal(文字的) translation of the Chinese greetings with a ruled English grammar and structure!Later on,my friend told me that it is a standard American greeting.I was too thrilled to believe her.Her words could not convince me at all.So I did a research on google.com.To my surprise, there are over 60 thousand web pages containing"Long time no see."This sentence has been widely used in emails, letters, newspapers, movies, books,or any other possible places.Though it is sort of informal,it is part of the language that Americans use daily.Ironically,if you type this phrase in Microsoft Word, the software will tell you that the grammar needs to be corrected.
Nobody knows the origin of this Chinglish sentence. Some people believe that it came from Charlie Chan's movies. In the 1930s,Hollywood moviemakers successfully created a world wide famous Chinese detective named"Charlie Chan"on wide screens.Detective Chan likes to teach Americans some Chinese wisdom by quoting Confucius."Long time no see"was his trademark.Soon after Charlie Chan,"Long time no see"became a popular phrase in the real world with thanks to the popularity of these movies.
Some scholars refer to America as a huge pot of stew. All kinds of culture are mixed in the stew together, and they change the color and taste of each other.American Chinese, though a minority ethnic(少数民族的成员) group in the United States,is also contributing some changes to the stew!Language is usually the first thing to be influenced in the mixed stew.
You can have some other examples than adoptions from Chinese, such as pizza from Italian, susi from Japanese, and déjà vu from French etc. There is a long list!Americans do not just simply borrow something from others. They will modify it and make it their own,so you would not be surprised to find a tofu and peanut butter hamburger in a restaurant,or to buy a bottle of iced Chinese green tea with honey in a grocery store.Since Americans appreciate Chinese culture more and more nowadays,I believe more Chinese words will become American English in the future. In this way the American stew keeps adding richness and flavor.
