19.What science story once told about other worlds far away is now a fact.Astronomers prove another solar (of the sun) system like ours with some planets in the constellation Andromeda (仙女座).
Geoffrey Marcy is a professor of astronomy and physics at San Francisco State University. He says,"What we have found now is indeed a fully-grown system of planets around the star Upsilon Andromeda. It appears to have three planets, one close in,one at a middle distance, and one farther out.The star is slightly larger than our sun.The planets are huge, like our Jupiter(木星)."
Marcy's partner in this research,Debra Fischer, describes the solar system,"Here are the inner planet that goes around every 46 days, the middle planet that goes around every 242 days, and then the outer planet that goes around every three and a half to four years."
The sun of that solar system,Upsilon Andromeda,is so near and bright that it can be seen by using no equipment during summer and fall.
For twelve years astronomers searched the skies in the belief that if our sun has planets around it,surely others do,too.Geoffrey Marcy says,"And then starting three and a half years ago,we began finding for the first time planets singly, one planet here around one star…"
"When I look up at the stars now at night,I can imagine easily that every one of them has planets around them,"says Debra Fischer.
It was a tremble (shaking) in the star that led Marcy to the planets."The star rocks around because of the gravity of the planet as a dog owner gets pulled around by a little dog."
Can they support life?We don't know, because present technology is not advanced enough to determine what the planets are made of.That,Marcy says,is astronomy's next challenge.
32.What's the relation between Andromeda (A),Upsilon Andromeda system (U) and the mentioned three planets (P)?D

33.According to Debra Fischer,in the new solar system,B.
A.the larger a planet is,the shorter it takes to go around the star
B.the farther a planet is from the star, the longer it takes to go around the star
C.it takes all the planets around three and a half to four years to go around the star
D.the planets move around the star at the same speed
34.What led to Marcy's discovery of the planets?C
A.That any planet has gravity.
B.That a dog owner was pulled by his dog.
C.The tremble of Upsilon Andromeda.
D.That any star has its planets.
35.We can infer (推断) that the scientists areA.
A.to find out whether the planets can support life
B.to find means to travel to the planets
C.to communicate with the living beings on the planets
D.soon to be able to answer the question.

18.For more than twenty years scientists have been seeking to understand the mystery of the"sixth sense"of direction.By trying out ideas and solving problems one by one,they are now getting closer to one answer.One funny idea from observing animals in nature is that animals   might have a built-in compass.
Many birds migrate(迁徙)twice a year between their summer homes and winter homes.Some of them fly for thousands of kilometers and mostly at night.Experiments have shown that some birds can recognize star patterns.But they can keep on course even under cloudy skies.How can they do that?A common bird that does not migrate but is great at finding its way home is the horning pigeon(鹤子)and they have been widely studied.One interesting experiment was to attach little magnets (磁铁,磁场)to the birds'heads to block their magnetic sense-just as a loud radio can keep you from hearing a call to dinner.On sunny days,that did not fool the pigeons.Evidently they can use the  sun to tell which way they are going.But on cloudy days,the pigeons with magnets could not find their way.It was as if the magnets had blocked their magnetic sense.Similar experiments with the same kind of results were done with honeybees.
In spite of the experiments,the idea of an animal compass seemed pretty extraordinary.How would animals get the magnetic stuff for a compass?An answer came from an unexpected source,A scientist was studying bacteria that lived in the mud of ponds.He found  accidentally little rod-like bacteria that all swam together in one direction 一 north.In fact,the bacteria had made themselves into little magnets that could line up with the earth's magnet.
The big news was that a living thing,even a simple bacterium,can make magnetite.That led to a search to see whether animals might have it.By using a special instrument,scientists were able to find magnetite in bees and birds,and even in fish.In each animal,except for the bee,the magnetic stuff was always in or close to the brain.
Thus,the idea of a built-in animal compass began to seem reasonable.

32.The main purpose of this passage is toD.
A.explain how the animal compass was invented
B.answer how an animal would get the magnetic stuff for a compass
C.introduce a famous experiment
D.prove the idea that animals might have a built-in compass
33.Which of the following can we infer from Paragraph 3?B
A.The bacteria magnetic sense seemed to be the same as the earth's.
B.The earth itself is a big magnet with which something magnetic might lines up
C.Little rod-like bacteria were found to swim north together through experiments.
D.Migrant birds can easily lose their way because of lacking magnetie.
34.The underlined words"keep on course"in the second paragraph means"A
A.stay in the correctflying route
B.lose one's way
C.remain calm
D.recognize star patterns
35.Where is probably the built-in magnet for a fish according to the scientists?D
A.Close to its stomach.
B.In its heart.
C.Far from its brain.
D.Inside its head.

16.Grown-ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since.A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away.He can play, catch and hit a ball as well as his son.A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins"Twinkle, twinkle, little star"or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows:Once we have learned something, additional(额外的) learning trials(尝试)increase the length(长度) of time we will remember it.
In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them.We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as"Twinkle, twinkle, little star"and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn.
The multiplication tables(乘法口诀表)are an exception(例外) to the general rule that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood.
The law of overlearning explains why cramming(突击学习)for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade,is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course.By cramming,a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned.A little overlearning,on the other hand,is really necessary for one's future development.
32.What is the main idea of paragraph I?C
A.Poem reading is a good way to learn words.
B.Children have a better memory than grown-ups.
C.People remember well what they learned in childhood.
D.Stories for children arc easy to remember.

A.presenting research findings
B.using examples
C.making a comparison
D.setting down general rules
34.What does the word"they"in Paragraph 4 refer to?A
A.The multiplication tables.
B.Commonly accepted rules.
C.Things easily forgotten.
D.School subjects.
35.What is the author's opinion on cramming?C
A.It leads to failure in college exams.
B.It's possible to result in poor memory.
C.It's helpful only in a limited way.
D.It increases students'learning interest.

15.It is a long time since I took up teaching.During my teaching career,I often ask my student to read the text until they can recite them, and I tell them that recitation is an important part of their homework. However, some of my students are tired of doing so,thinking that it is both hard and useless. They argue that it takes a long time to recite a text from memory and text itself never appears in a test paper.
In my opinion,it naturally takes time to recite a text, but it is worth doing so.When you are able to recite a text, you are sure to be familiar with the words and expressions. When you need them in reading or writing or doing exercises, they will come to your mind quickly, and so you will give quick response to all kinds of language situation. How can we say that it is useless?
Besides, many students complain that they soon forget what they were once able to recite. This is true, but you don't need to worry. While you are reading and forgetting the texts, your language level is being raised.Sure you don't remember your Chinese texts that you once read in the primary school, but now you are able to read novels and newspaper. So,recitation of the texts will help you improve your language ability.
