【题目】B

However urban life strikes you, cities worldwide have been growing every day。However urban life strikes you, cities worldwide have been growing ever more rapidly. Some of this growth has occurred in the developed world, but the most dramatic increase has been in the Third World. Almost all the world’s population growth over the next 30 years will take place in the cities of developing countries

By the year 2030, for the first time in history, 60 percent of the world’s people will be living in cities.

This is actually good news in some ways. “Cities are the fundamental building blocks of prosperity,” says Marc Weiss, chairman of the Prague Institute for Global Urban Development, both for the nation and for families.” Industrial and commercial activities in urban areas account for between 50 and 80 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) in most countries of the world“ there’s the crazy notion that the way to deal with a city’s problems is to keep people out of them,”Weiss continued. “But the problems of the rural life are even more serious than those of the city.” For better or worse, urban-watchers are clear on one point: The quality of life for most people in the future will be determined by the quality of cities. Those cities will be bigger than ever. And yet, population numbers by themselves don’t determine a city’s prospects; after all, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and Hamburg, Germany, have the same population. Nor is explosive growth necessarily the determining factor. “City problems,” one authority points out, “mostly have to do with weak, ineffective, and usually unrepresentative city governments.”

1In the author’s opinion, _________.

A.better city, better life

B.both urban and rural areas have a larger population

C.the larger population, the faster a city develops

D.both urban and rural areas have larger gross domestic products

2Which statement is NOT true according to the passage?

A.The developing countries develop faster than the developed countries.

B.Cities contribute more to the GDP than the villagers.

C.Some problems are more easily solved in cities than in country.

D.It’s impossible to solve urban problems by getting people out of cities.

3The last paragraph implies that ____________.

A.Public services are ineffective.

B.Cities are increasing too fast.

C.Population is not linked with development.

D.Government should be responsible for the problems in the cities.

A. Choose your words carefully.

B. And saying thanks at the beginning has a practical purpose.

C. First you have to work out what you’re going to say.

D. Every speech needs it, and you need it, too, probably at the beginning.

E. Stick to one subject-the future of the soccer club, for example.

F. This process takes time, so start once you begin thinking about the speech.

G. The more important the message is, the less time it requires to say it.

【题目】While income worry is a rather common problem of the aged, loneliness is another problem that aged parents may face. Of all the reasons that explain their loneliness, a large geographical distance between parents and their children is the major one. This phenomenon is commonly known as “Empty Nest Syndrome”.

In order to find better chances outside their countries, many young people have gone abroad, leaving their parents behind with no clear idea of when they will return home. Their parents spend countless lonely days and nights, taking care of themselves, in the hope that someday their children will come back to stay with them. The fact that most of these young people have gone to Europeanized or Americanized societies makes it unlikely that they will hold as tightly to the value of duty as they would have if they had not left their countries. Whatever the case, it has been noted that the values they hold do not necessarily match what they actually do. This geographical and cultural distance also prevents the grown-up children from providing response in time for their aged parents living by themselves.

The situation in which grown-up children live far away from their aged parents has been described as “distant parent phenomenon(现象)”, which is common both in developed countries and in developing countries. Our society has not yet been well prepared for “Empty Nest Syndrome”(空巢综合症).

【1】 According to the passage, the loneliness of aged parents is mainly caused by ________.

A. their earlier experience of living alone

B. the poor living conditions in their native countries

C. the common worry that they have not saved much money

D. the distance between where parents live and where their children live

2Many young people have gone abroad, leaving their aged parents behind, to ________.

A. realize their dreams in foreign countries

B. seek a better place for their aged parents

C. live in the countries with more money

D. continue their studies abroad

3If young people go abroad, ________.

A. they do not hold to the value of duty at all

B. they can give some help to their parents back home

C. they cannot do what they should for their parents

D. they believe what they actually do is right

4From the last paragraph, we can infer that ________.

A. the situations in the developed and developing countries are different

B. “Empty Nest Syndrome” has arrived unexpectedly in our society

C. children will become independent as soon as they go abroad

D. the aged parents are not fully prepared for “Empty Nest Syndrome”

5The society discussed in the passage is most probably ________.

A. France B. America

C. China D. Britain

【题目】Compassion is a desire within us to help others. With effort, we can translate compassion into action. An experience last weekend showed me this is true, I work part-time in a supermarket across from a building for the elderly. These old people are our main customers, and it’s not hard to lose patience over their slowness. But last Sunday, one aged gentleman appeared to teach me a valuable lesson. This untidy man walked up to my register(收款机)with a box of biscuits. He said he was out of cash, had just moved into his room, and had nothing in his cupboards. He asked if we could let him have the food on trust. He promised to repay me the next day.

I couldn’t help staring at him, I wondered what kind of person he had been ten or twenty years before, and what he would be like if luck had gone his way. I had a hurt in my heart for this kind of human soul, all alone in the world, I told him that I was sorry, but store rules didn’t allow me to do so. I felt stupid and unkind saying this, but I valued my job.

Just then, another man, standing behind the first, spoke up. If anything, he looked more pitiable. “Charge it to me” was all he said.

What I had been feeling was pity. Pity is soft and safe and easy. Compassion, on the other hand, is caring in action. I thanked the second man but told him that was not allowed either, then I reached into my pocket and paid for the biscuits myself. I reached into my pocket because these two men had reached into my heart and taught me compassion.

1The aged gentleman who wanted to buy the biscuits ________.

A. promised to obey the store rules

B. forgot to take any money with him

C. hoped to have the food first and pay later

D. could not afford anything more expensive

2Which of the following best describes the old gentleman?

A. Kind and lucky.

B. Poor and lonely.

C. Friendly and helpful.

D. Hurt and disappointed.

3The writer acted upon the store rules because ________.

A. he wanted to keep his present job

B. he felt no pity for the old gentleman

C. he considered the old man dishonest

D. he expected someone else to pay for the old man

4What does the writer learn from his experience?

A. wealth is more important than anything else.

B. Helping others is easier said than done.

C. experience is better gained through practice.

D. Obeying the rules means more than compassion.

5How would the old men feel at the end of the story?

A. Sad and disappointed. B. Happy and lucky.

C. Depressed and unlucky. D. Surprised and grateful.
