【题目】My name is Kenn Nesbitt and I’m a poet. I started writing poems as a hobby in 1994. At the time, I never gave any thought to publishing them; I just wrote for my own amusement. But it was so much fun that I ended up writing a lot of poems, which led me to the idea of creating a website, and at last writing books. If you want to write poems, I have some advice for you.

My ideas mostly come from my imagination. That is, I like to sit and daydream, and see what kinds of crazy things I can think up. For kids, I suggest that whenever you think of an idea, you should write it down, even if you don’t have time write them to create a whole poem from your idea. I have notebooks full of ideas that I haven’t written poems about yet. So I can always look through my notebooks and find something fun to write about.

One way to make poems interesting is to write about things readers can understand: school, family, food, pets, games, sports, and so on. To make a poem funny, I often ask myself, “What kinds of funny things might happen at school, or over dinner? What funny things might your pets do?” and it’s OK to make things up, such as having a pet elephant, or a pet that plays video games. Use your imagination and see where it leads. But the best advice I can give kids is not to just write one poem, it might be a great one, or maybe not so good. But if you write ten poems, you’ll probably find that, even though they aren’t all perfect, a few of them are much better than the others.

1Why did the author start writing poems at first?

A. To publish them. B. To entertain himself.

C. To contribute to a website. D. To kill time.

2What’s the main idea of Paragraph 2?

A. How to write poems. B. How to think up crazy things.

C. How to get ideas for poems. D. How to become creative.

3According to the author, what is the best advice he can give us?

A. Just write great poems. B. Write as many as possible.

C. Make poems as funny as possible. D. Try to make things up in your poems.

4Where does the author come from?

A. America B. China C. Germany D. not mentioned

5What’s the author’s purpose of writing the text?

A. To suggest some poems written by him.

B. To show writing poems isn’t that hard.

C. To tell readers how to write poems.

D. To explain how he writes poems.

I do hope that all parents will stop to saying such things to their children.

【题目】A drunken burglar(盗贼) in the Orrel Park area of Liverpool, ended up leaping out of a window after a 10-year-old girl asked him to prove he was a superhero.

The drunken thief who pretended he was Superman to stop a child raising the alarm has been caught after he leapt from the apartment building in his pants to make the girl convinced.

Thief Ethan Adamson, 25, told police that he had broken into a fifth-floor flat after a drinking session(酒会), believing it was empty.

But he was horrified when the owner’s 10-year-old daughter woke up while he was there.

From his hospital bed, the thief told reporters, “To keep her quiet, I told her I was really Superman and I’d soon be flying off back to my secret headquarters.”

She called my bluff (虚张声势) and told me, “If you’re Superman, show me you can fly or I’ll scream”.

“I had no choice so I stripped to my pants to look more like a superhero and went to the window. I saw another roof below and I thought I could make it but it turned out to be a lot further down than thought. I know it doesn’t make sense but it did to me when I was drunk.”

Police later found him on the roof in just his yellow pants, covered in cuts and bruises after a baffled neighbor heard his cries of pain.

He now faces seven years behind bars for burglary.

Police spokesman Frank Amado said, “He was in quite a serious state and couldn’t move until we got up there using ladders. He was treated for his injuries and we got him some fresh clothes, before taking him to hospital where he is being kept under guard until he is well enough to be arrested.”

The Best Ways to Offer Support and Encouragement

Whether it is a friend, family member, or coworker, at some time or another somebody will need support and encouragement. This could be the result of a disappointing change in life, a health change or other similar challenges. 【1】 Even if you do not think that you have the ability to offer the proper support and encouragement, your willingness to be there and to listen may be enough.

Each situation is different, and each would require different levels of both support and encouragement. 2 Helping keep up someone's spirits when they are feeling helpless just by letting them know you are there, can make a serious difference in their lives.

3 For people in this situation, often a telephone call, or dropping in to say “hello” is more than enough. You may not feel that you are doing much of anything, but to the person who is feeling isolated the effort you take to stop and see them,or call them can make a big difference. For someone who has recently lost a job,you may be able to offer support by helping them network effectively. Or, you may be able to help them craft a new resume, apply for benefits,or a number of other “small” things that may seem insignificant to you, but to them can be a very significant event.

4 However,if you let them know that you are there for them, and make it a point to check in with them regularly, they may soon feel more comfortable and share them /span>with you. Take for example a person who is suffering with depression.

5 They may not be willing to admit that there is something wrong. However,if you trust your instincts(直觉) and take a little extra care to support and encourage them even in little ways, you can make a huge difference in their overall outlook.

A. You know that there is something wrong.

B. All too often, people feel isolated and do not know where to turn.

C. So you may need support and encouragement to pull through.

D. You may not always understand all of the issues going on in someone's life.

E. In such cases,it is natural for you to reach out and offer your support and encouragement.

F. You know better than anyone the best ways to support and encourage someone who is going through a difficult time.

G. The support you offer could be as simple as helping with simple household tasks, running errands(跑腿儿),or even being available for telephone calls.

【题目】The “melting pot” in American cuisine(菜肴。烹饪法) is a myth, not terribly unlike the idea of a melting pot of American culture, notes chef Dan Barber. “Most cultures don’t think about their cuisine in such monolithic(统一的) terms,” he says. “French, Mexican, Chinese, and Italian cuisines each consist of dozens of distinct regional foods. And I think ‘American’ cuisine is moving in the same direction, becoming more localized, not globalized.

American cuisine is shaped by the natural wealth of the country. Having never faced agricultural hardship, Americans don’t have to rely on rotating crops, such as the Japanese, whose food culture now showcases buckwheat (荞麦) alongside rice, or the Indians, or the French and Italians, who feature beans alongside wheat. “That kind of negotiation with the land forced people to incorporate(接受) those crops in to the culture,” says Barber. And so eating soba noodles becomes part of what it means to be Japanese, and eating beans becomes part of what it means to be French.

So if what we eat is what we are, what are Americans? Well, meat. “If Americans have any unifying food identity, I would say we are a mostly white meat culture,” says Barber. “The protein-centric dinner plate, whether you’re talking about a boneless chicken breast, or a 16-ounce steak, as an everyday expectation is something that America really created, and now exports to the rest of the world.”

Every single culture and religion uses food as part of their celebrations, says Ellen Gustafson, co-founder of the FEED Project and The 30 Project, which aims to deal with both hunger and overweight issues globally. “The celebratory nature of food is universal. Every season, every harvest, and every holiday has its own food, and this is true in America as well. It helps define us.”

【1】According to the first paragraph, American cuisine ________.

A. consists of varieties of regional foods

B. is becoming more and more globalized

C. has absorbed a lot from Chinese cuisine

D. is not as unified as its culture

【2】What has made American cuisine different from other cuisines according to the article?

A. Relying on rotating crops

B. The difficulty of planting crops

C. The US’ melting pot culture

D. The US’ agricultural wealth

【3】We can conclude from the article that _____ has become part of what it means to be American.

A. eating rice B. eating beans

C. eating white meat D. eating soba noodles

【4】 Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the article?

A. American cuisine is healthier than other cuisines.

B. American cuisine hasn’t changed much over time.

C. Americans use food as part of their celebrations.

D. Americans are quite proud of their own cuisine.
