【题目】When I graduated from college I dreamed of being a television news reporter. Having no experience, I had to work in a small town until I finally got my big break in the form of a job in Boston. I made it.

Soon, reality set in. I was too often sent to run after accused criminals out of courts, waiting outside of crime scene tape or at the doorstep of a family still crying for tragedy (悲剧). My breaking point came the day I accidentally informed a young woman that her mother died. It was the worst day of my professional life and the day I decided I no longer wanted to shine a light on these stories. My career was ebbing, and at the same time my personal life was too-I divorced.

My mom had always told me “When you’re feeling extremely upset, go help someone else.” So I started seeking out stories of people who had been in the news under tragic circumstances but were doing something inspiring with their lives: a young girl who was paralyzed (瘫痪的) by an accident but was uplifting her classmates with her positive spirit, a blind and autistic (自闭的) musician who learned to play 27 instruments, a disabled soldier who opened his own art studio. I started to tell and promote stories like them.

Over the last 10 years I have discovered my kindness gift: my ability to see the beautiful side of a person and reflect it back to them and the world. In telling stories of people turning their own hurt into acts of helping others I have become more sympathetic, more grateful and kinder. I have learned kindness is who we are, that our power for it is limitless and that, as we shine a light on it, it grows.

【题目】My daughter went to see The Wild One recently and she commented that Marlon Brando was wearing jeans so long ago. Of course he helped set the trend, so that got me thinking about the link between films and trends in fashion. Fashion and films have gone hand in hand for long. The Wild One is a good example: it appeared in 1954, starring Brando. Dressed in a black leather motorcycle jacket, leather cap and jeans, he created a look which is still considered “cool” today. Everyone from Madonna to middle-aged men is seen wearing the classic leather motorcycle jacket.

Another strong influence on fashion trends was Breakfast at Tiffany’s, starring Audrey Hepburn. She made famous the simple black dress that looks perfect at either a cocktail party or just standing around an expensive department store like Tiffany’s with a pastry and coffee in your hand, as Audrey Hepburn does in the film. She looks so elegant, wearing simple but beautiful dresses, big dark glasses and a string of pearls around her neck. Audrey Hepburn still influences women’s fashion with her “Tiffany’s look”.

In more modem times, the film star Uma Thurman created a major fashion trend when she appeared in the film Pulp Fiction, made in 1994. Her style was very simple. Her black trousers, crisp white shirt and hair style was copied by women in the world.

Influencing fashion trends can often be about timing. The movie Memoirs of a Geisha came just in time to start a trend in Japanese fashion. It starred the Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi, who wore beautiful silk kimonos (和服), and it won an Oscar for Costume Design. Many travel companies picked up on the trend and ran “geisha trips” to Japan. The film has also led to a regained interest in kimonos. It is now quite common to see young Japanese women wearing kimonos not just on traditional occasions, but at various social events. The fashion is also beginning to spread to Western countries.

1What is the best title of the passage?

A. Films and fashion. B. Stars’ fashion.

C. Influential films. D. Film cultures.

2Who will people associate Madonna wearing the leather motorcycle jacket with?

A. Zhang Ziyi. B. Audrey Hepburn.

C. Uma Thurman. D. Marlon Brando.

3What is implied in the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s according to the passage?

A. One can be active by wearing black.

B. One can be elegant by dressing simply.

C. One can be famous by looking perfect.

D. One can be stylish by eating at Tiffany’s.

4What does the film Memoirs of a Geisha lead to?

A. The popularity of the Chinese actress.

B. The worldwide reading of Geisha stories.

C. The recovery of interest in kimonos.

D. The “geisha trips” to social events.

【题目】An Unexpected Storm

This is a story about an extreme storm in Moscow. It happened two and a half years ago. It was the first time in my life that I saw such a strong storm. For Moscow, it was very unusual, and nobody predicted this storm before it happened.

It was a sunny day in July, and I was at home alone watching TV. The windows and the door to the balcony were wide open because the weather was so hot.

Suddenly, I felt a strong wind from outside. I wanted to close the window and came near. I looked out of the window and saw a black sky and trees blowing over because of the strong wind. I tried to close the window, but the wind made me fall down. I was afraid that the glass might break.

I stood up and tried to close the window again, but it was not possible because the wind was now stronger, and it was pushing the window open. I ran into the bathroom and took the mop to close the window. It worked.

When I looked outside, the tree in front of my window was flat on the ground, and there was strong thunder and lightning. I decided to pull out all the electrical plugs, which took about 10 seconds. A sportsman would have envied my speed.

When I finished, I looked outside. It was terrible, and I understood how people are helpless compared to the power of nature.

Suddenly, the wind stopped, and it began to hail(下冰雹). The ice was the size of grapes. After 10 minutes, everything stopped, and the sun shone as before. It was strange. A few minutes later, the phone began to ring every five minutes. It was my friends or relatives. We asked each other how it was and how we felt after the storm.

Many trees died because of the storm. For a few days, the people helped clean parks and gardens. Some people's cars were damaged by trees falling on them. After one week, it was history already.
