In the course of working my way through school, I took many jobs I would rather forget. But none of
these jobs was as dreadful as my job in an apple plant. The work was hard; the pay was poor; and, most of
all, the working conditions were terrible.
First of all, the job made huge demands on my strength. For ten hours a night, I took boxes that rolled
down a metal track and piled them onto a truck. Each box contained twelve heavy bottles of apple juice. I
once figured out that I was lifting an average of twelve tons of apple juice every night.
I would not have minded the difficulty of the work so much if the pay had not been so poor. I was paid
the lowest wage of that time-two dollars an hour. Because of the low pay, I felt eager to get as much as
possible. I usually worked twelve hours a night but did not take home much more than $ 100 a week.
But even more than the low pay, what made me unhappy was the working conditions. During work I was
limited to two ten-minute breaks and an unpaid half hour for lunch. Most of my time was spent outside loading
trucks with those heavy boxes in near-zero-degree temperatures. The steel floors of the trucks were like ice,
which made my feet feel like stone. And after the production line shut down at night and most people left, I
had to spend two hours alone cleaning the floor.
I stayed on the job for five months, all the while hating the difficulty of the work, the poor money, and the
conditions under which I worked. By the time I left, I was determined never to go back there again.

A. To pay for his schooling.
B. To save for his future.

D. To gain some experience
2. The following facts describe the terrible working conditions of the plant EXCEPT ______.
A. loading boxes in the freezing cold
B. having limited time for breaks

A. The writer's unhappy school life.
B. The writer's eagerness to earn money.
C. The writer's experience as a full-time worker.
D. The writer's hard work in an apple plant.
4. How is the text organized?

Last Friday my brother and I were driving home together after doing some shopping and gave our
attention to an interesting conversation. Because of this distraction (分心)my brother took a wrong turn.
Unfortunately, the wrong turn took us towards a bridge and we had no way to turn back. Unwillingly, my
brother paid the bridge fee and drove on. He was clearly frustrated by the mistake and the needless
waste of $4.
We eventually reached an exit and, as we took it, my brother noticed a young fellow pulled over to
the side of the road. He came out of his car and tried to phone someone. I was busy trying to figure out
which way we would go next but my brother pulled over and asked the guy if he needed any help. And
he did. He had a flat tire and needed a tool to get it off.
My brother gave him a wrench, and then began to help him change the flat. The young man said that
this had been a bad week for him: earlier he had gotten into a minor car accident, and now this flat on his
way home from work. But he called us "a breath of fresh air" and kept thanking us because he really
would have been stuck if we hadn't come along.
After we finished the job he thanked us again and pulled out $20 from his pocket and tried to give it
to us. "No," I said. "We were never supposed to even get on that bridge, we took a wrong turn. But now we know why we did. It was to help you. Thank you for turning our mistake into an opportunity to
serve."
What I loved most was that my brother was able to see a chance to help. His reaction in the situation
is a lesson for everyone and we felt so good the rest of the day.
1. When did the author and his brother notice the young man who had a flat tire?
A. Before they arrived at a bridge.
B. When they were passing through an exit.
C. When the young man stopped them for help.
D. After they came back to the right road.
2.We can learn from the text that the writer's brother ______.
A. didn't know the roads well
B. was a warm-hearted young man
C. made the turn to help the young man
D. regretted making a wrong turn all the way home
3.What did the young man mean by calling the writer and his brother "a breath of fresh air" ?
A. He had been in the hot sun waiting for help for so long.
B. His car's air conditioner was broken.
C. They calmed him down by offering him a cold drink.
D. They changed his bad luck and the bad mood he was in.
4. Which of the following sentences best describes the writer's experience?
A. It's no use crying over spilt milk.
B. God helps those who help themselves.

One kind of female butterfly mates only once in its life —and then closes its wings to avoid
"harassment" when pursued by persistent and unwanted males, a Japanese researcher said.
Observations of the Small Copper Butterfly, a colourful orange and black butterfly, showed that some
females closed their wings when males flew by, but only when they were males of their own species, said
Jun-Ya Ide, an associate professor at Kurume Institute of Technology in Fukuoka, western Japan.
"When we looked into why, the males were courting the females. They do this very stubbornly, so the
females sometimes try to get away-or prefer to stay unobserved," he added.
Ide and his colleagues brought a model of a male butterfly near the females to test their reactions and
found that young females that had yet to mate kept their wings open, but those that had already mated
closed them.
Not only can the persistent attentions of unwanted suitors harm the delicate females, fleeing from them
—with the male often in pursuit —uses up strength and can even shorten their lives, he added.
"Closing their wings makes them less visible, helping them avoid communication with their own species. We figured they were trying to avoid harassment by males," Ide said.
1. What does the word "harassment" mean in the paragraph?
A. sexual invasion
B. embarassment
C. attack
D. threat
2. Why some some females closed their wings when males flew by?
A. because the female butterfly mates only once in its life.
B. because they close their wings to avoid "harassment" when pursued by persistent and unwanted
males.
C. because they don’t like the male butterfly at all.
D. because they are afraid of the male butterfly.
3. According the the passage, which is correct?
A. The females closed their wings when males flew by.
B. The female butterfly mates only once in its life.
C. Only the model of a male butterfly can make the young female butterflies to keep their wings open.
D. Not only can the persistent attentions of wanted suitors harm the delicate females, fleeing from them
—with the male often in pursuit -- uses up strength and can even shorten their lives.

Christopher Thomas, 27, was a writer by night and a teacher by day when he noticed he
was always tired and was losing weight fast. Diagnosed with diabetes(糖尿病), Thomas
would need to inject himself with insulin(胰岛素) three times a day for the rest of his life or
risk nerve damage, blindness, and even death. And if that weren't bad enough, he had no
health insurance.
After a month of feeling upset, Thomas decided he'd better find a way to fight back. He
left Canton, Michigan for New York, got a job waiting tables, nicknamed himself the Diabetic
Rockstar, and created diabeticrockstar.com, a free online community for diabetics and their
loved ones-a place where over 1,100 people share personal stories, information, and resources.
Jason Swencki's son, Kody, was diagnosed with diabetes at six. Father and son visit the
online children's forums(论坛) together most evenings. "Kody gets so excited, writing to kids
from all over," says Swencki, one of the site's volunteers. "They know what he's going through,
so he doesn't feel alone."
Kody is anything but alone: Diabetes is now the seventh leading cause of death in the United
States, with 24 million diagnosed cases. And more people are being diagnosed at younger ages.
These days, Thomas's main focus is his charity(慈善机构), Fight It, which provides medicines
and supplies to people-225 to date-who can't afford a diabetic's huge expenses. Fightit.org has
raised about $ 23,000-in products and in cash. In May, Thomas will hold the first annual Diabetic
Rockstar Festival in the Caribbean.
Even with a staff of 22 volunteers, Thomas often devotes up to 50 hours a week to his cause,
while still doing his fulltime job waiting tables. "Of the diabetes charities out there, most are putting
money into finding a cure," says Bentley Gubar, one of Rockstar's original members. "But Christopher
is the only person I know saying people need help now."
